Compaq 2108US laptop.

Runs great but does not find battery. Other than that runs fast and stable. chromium runs very quick. Replaced Asunder with ripperx as Asunder just does not like this machine in any distro.

On this netbook which can be tricky dickey. I use this script (executable) named .battery.sh

Code: Select all

#!/usr/bin/env python

import os, math
from decimal import *

rate = 0.0
batteries = os.listdir("/sys/class/power_supply")
output ="No Data"

for battery in batteries:
    if"BAT" in battery:
        status = open("/sys/class/power_supply/%s/status" % (battery)).read().strip("\n")
        if"Discharging" in status:
            energy = Decimal(open("/sys/class/power_supply/%s/energy_now" % (battery)).read())
            power = Decimal(open("/sys/class/power_supply/%s/power_now" % (battery)).read())
            if power > 0:
                hours = math.floor(energy / power)
                minutes = math.floor(((energy % power) / power) * 60)
                output ="%.0f hours %.0f minutes" % (hours, minutes)
            else:
                output ="Gathering"
        else:
            output = status
print output
My .conkyrc and .conky/icewm_conky line is as follows with .batterysh sitting in

Code: Select all

Batt: ${battery_percent BAT1}% ${execi 05 /home/harry.battery,sh}
I have acpi ,acpi-support-base,and acpitool installed though.

A true old bonker, a 1998 Toshiba Satellite 4000CDT!
233MHz Pentium II with 152MB RAM and a new 40GB harddisk.

I had to use a downgraded Liquorix kernel in order to get support for the Yamaha OPL3-SA3 sound chip and to allow compilation of the driver of the Realtek RTL8192CUS. The latter is a WLAN chip employed in the aftermarket Edimax EW-7811Un 802.11n wireless adapter.
Luckily, the 4000CDT features one USB 1.0 port; all other ports, even CardBus, proved to be too slow for internet connections.

@dolphin_oracle No, I used the normal graphical installer to install the full version.
antiX 12 worked perfectly, but 13.1 had a couple of driver regressions that I resolved

As of a few days ago, I have antiX 13.1 installed on a Gateway Solo 2500 which I bought used in 1998 (it came with a full-product Win98, but the internal System Information says that was an upgrade, so it was probably sold new with Win95 installed). This machine has 192 MiB RAM (upgradable to 288 MiB, and RAM modules still available to do so), now running a 16 GB"redneck SSD" using a 300x Compact Flash in a 2.5" IDE adapter (adapter will accommodate a second CF but I don't think the laptop can use it, as the IDE controller is fully populated with one CF and the CD-ROM drive), and boots and runs pretty promptly from the CF (antiX has almost 10 GiB space, about 5+ GiB free, with /home in the root partition and a 1 GiB swap, which it doesn't look likely to use much). Given the way I use the machine, it'll probably run for many years even starting from a used CF with unknown number of past writes -- apparently modern CF has a service life of about a million writes, which would be decades with this machine primarily used in a mode that never writes anything. I also have antiX as the primary OS on my second desktop machine, an Athlon XP 2000+ (1.6 GHz) with 1 GiB RAM and 40 GB hard disk divided between Win98 and antiX -- makes it safe to use on the Internet for the first time in years.

I just put together another JUNKBOX machine for a teacher friend of mine who will use it for LibreWrite and research. Are you ready for this?

HP/Asus P2B VT motherboard Intel Pentium II 450 Mhz, 128 Mb memory, floppy drive, onboard graphics, 20 Gb hard drive, wireless and wired network in a framed cased (no sides). From what I was able to find, this motherboard was used for Windows 3.

AntiX 13.2 loaded with no problems. Iceweasel maxs out the cpu.

FYI, for those who may be new here or simply a Newbie:

The command inxi -Fxz issued from a console terminal and embedded with code tags using the"Full Editor" button (on this forum) will allow you to share the specs of the systems here.

Iceweasel maxs out the cpu.
Look in synaptic or apt for netsurf browser. It won';t do flash but is lighter on resources. Dillo works OK for me also as well as links but netsurf is more newby friendly.

Code: Select all

$ apt-cache search netsurf
libnsbmp0 - NetSurf BMP decoder
libnsbmp0-dbg - NetSurf BMP decoder - Debug files
libnsbmp0-dev - NetSurf BMP decoder - Development files
libnsgif0 - NetSurf GIF decoder
libnsgif0-dbg - NetSurf GIF decoder - Debugging symbols
libnsgif0-dev - NetSurf GIF decoder - Development files
netsurf - Small web browser with CSS support - Transition package
netsurf-common - Small web browser with CSS support common files
netsurf-fb - Small web browser with CSS support for framebuffers
netsurf-gtk - Small web browser with CSS support for GTK
My same spec IBM I sold way back after I fixed it.

if you need it really light, netsurf-fb works with no x, and act like a normal browser, except for what roky said

If someone ran Windows 3 on that one, they were behind the times. That's a 95/98 era system (see my specs above for the Solo 2500, which was a Win98 machine). Still doesn't bode well for browsing from my 300 MHz system if iceweasel maxes out a 450 MHz core...
