RC, is that the system you are having brightness problems with?

Perhaps it it related to the bug reported

Honestly, unless I'm running a browser, it's not so slow as to be remarkable (the laptop was actually slightly faster than my desktop machines when I bought it, though it had less RAM and hard disk). I played gjeweled on it briefly; that's playable (not as smooth as on my Athlon XP 2000+, but not really slow), terminal and file manager and such are very responsive. Iceweasel requires patience; I'm going to try getting netsurf on it, since Flash 11.2.202.235, which works on the non-SSE2 Athlon XP doesn't work on the Pentium II anyway (and I wouldn't trust 10.6, the older version that I'm pretty sure will work), that should speed up surfing (I'll probably also install an ad blocker; the software overhead will be much less than the rendering of the ads, I think).

Oh, and the current version of Java (1.7r45) does install and work on it; I was able to open GCS (GURPS Character Sheet), which hasn't worked on that laptop since it was changed over from a Windows executable to a Java program (Win98 couldn't run a new enough JRE to support that program), which means I can use it for gaming support again. I have to copy it to the redneck SSD (it won't run direct from the USB key), but once that's done it does run, slowly, but correctly.

My work file server. Memory use is a little higher than a regular antiX machine because its used for my surveillance and streams it to my home some 5 miles away.

What kind of cooler do you have on that CPU? __{{emoticon}}__

Gosh, I thought I was doing good with 28C.

I run a CoolerMaster V8 with fan speed control, and it's running at minimum. Often the fan doesn't even spin, it does a tiny twitch and might rotate 12% every few seconds at room temperature when the system is idling, normal use you can almost count the rotations and heavy use it might get to 400rpm. Here's a pic of the day I assembled the machine. I added extra cooling to the Southbridge after I took this photo because it was running at 57° less than 2 minutes after booting up, it now sits at a healthy 28°

I purchased the cooler on special for a graphics system build, but used a different solution instead. It sat in stock for nearly 2 years before I thought to heck with it, I'm going to use it and add video 720p video surveillance and streaming to the list of jobs the machine does and it never even breaks a sweat.

pcpavnz -- I hope you're not trying to run that on that aluminum foil. With all the shorts you can get, it will run HOT. Like FIRE HOT.

right-hand side, I see plier handles thru the transparent plastic.
Guessing it's the anti-static mylar bag the mobo was shipped in.

it is nothing special... just a compact hp desktop.
Now, I could never fit something like that huge cooler in that tiny box.. what options do I have? I guess water cooling?

R.C., for whatever it's worth, I'm running a quad core at higher clock speed than that (Core 2 Quad 8400, 2.67 GHz, 95 W thermal) with just a fan-cooled aluminum heat sink and BIOS-level fan speed control set to keep CPU core temperature below 35 C. No problem at all fitting inside a mid-tower ATX case; with careful wire bundle routing it could probably fit in a mini-AT case.
