Running M12 on a Dell Studio laptop
External 22" monitor, full resolution out of the box, HDMI input (I dismounted the laptop"s screen, out-of-service)

Got sound to work through HDMI (the audio plug is broken on the laptop's motherboard).
To enable sound through HDMI:
The audio module is disabled by default in kernel >=3.0. Add radeon.audio=1 to the end of your"kernel" line in /boot/grub/menu.lst to enable it.

My last baby for my computer breeding:
Got a used Dell Latitude D610 Pentium M 1.73 MHz 768 MB HD 40GB 14"
100 euros

Comes installed with WP pro. IE does not start: crapware installed by the former access provider does not let me connect to my box. ok, I will see that later, if I keep a Windows partition.

First test with antiX 12 full on live USB
Boots fine (extlinux as bootloader), screen resolution ok
Touch pad does not work, ok let's plug a USB mouse. No luck, cursor does not move !! Ok let's revert to a console and the command line: Ctrl-Alt-F1... nada
Strangely brightness control works from the hotkeys...

inxi -F will follow... when I solve this small issue

--- continuation ---

burnt a antiX-core-libre Edelweisspiraten CD-ROM
boots ok
I can log as demo; not tried to connect to the internet (wifi): ceni shows only my ethernet card (though inxi -F gives me the wifi card). where the hell did I put my ethernet cable?

Next step: burn the antiX-full ISO (yes, I got a RW CD)

--- update ---
booting antix-12 (full) from a fresh CD => same failure as in live-USB
boots until the lines that say something like: starting slim starting sshd
Then black screen, keyboard and mouse frozen
sometimes an arrow pointer at the center of the screen (got once the wallpaper in live-USB mode)

Found a Knoppix CD 6.2: mouse works, touchpad works, sound OK... (desktop sluggish with compiz effects enabled)

slim would be a perfect suspect...
More on this tonight.

Usually as a live-CD or in VirtualBox.
Right now on my main PC,, intel inside __{{emoticon}}__
1.6 Ghz CPU and 4 Gig Ram. Don't know more, if needed i may search trough the info-tools
Dang, it's fast (like really bad fat).

Been using xfce for a while now, and got hard times with icewm or fluxbox. But it sure is fun.

lagopus, try using the other boot options. Maybe it is agraphics card issue.

I can boot from a pre-release version: 26 May 2012
It works; touchpad ok, sound ok, brightness hotkeys ok, sound level buttons ko

What about the release ISO: something broken in Xorg, in a graphic card driver ?
(this is not a bad burn problem! I got the same issues with melanie's antiX-openbox-alpha1 iso)

Ok that's enough for this evening. I can go now and watch France-Belarus (football)
Let's have a beer.

I noticed that I have a problem with the two soundcards, as you see I have 1: SiS and 2: Ensoniq. After ervery new boot the default sound card has changed so that I have to plug out from one and plug in to the other to get the sound. I cannot configure it in the alsa-mixer. And in skype I can choose the pugged in device in the sound configuration and it works.
(I hope I explained the problem clearly.)
Can anybody help me to fix it? It's much disturbing everytime to climb down and behind the camputer to plug in and out the cables.
Thank you in advance for your help and greetings,
Susanne

Default Sound or Motherboard Sound card chip can be turned on or off in bios when I ran a external sound card on the motherboard on my IBM m41 Desktop computer.

This afternoon, I managed to get an old Dell Dimension 3000 desktop working AGAIN with antiX 12.0. I had it going a while back, and was using it through the testing cycle of 12.0, but then the monitor's energy saving feature and start up sequence was acting up. Well, today, I powered the monitor on and off a few times, and eventually got it to synch properly, then it worked, so I ran antiX 12.0 just fine on it TODAY. Not expecting it to give me much more life with the current monitor, but if I can find a cheap replacement monitor, who knows; that system could still last for YEARS!

Then, I mentioned the D610. That one has been problematic, too. For some reason, X freezes up if I try to boot straight into init 5, normal GUI mode. Yet, if I boot into init 3, then login as root, then type in init 5 from a console, it works fine. Have not deduced yet what is going on; don't think it is a problem with antiX, but it COULD possibly be an issue with the X.org Intel drivers, but I am not sure, since I do, with fiddling, get X to work. Why it freezes is still a question mark. If I can get some identifying, repeatable results, then I may be able to either fix it or at least report something that we could work on collaboratively.

If I am not alone in these issues, though, I am open to hearing from others what their experiences have been, and that may lead either to a fix in X or at least in some work arounds or other remedies; if I am able to report anything concrete, I will do so.

Glad to hear it Eino! I don't often have problems loading and using most Linux distros, but the ones where I occasionally have problems with don't get much of my attention unless they are one of my favorites and they are under development and need testing to resolve those kinds of issues, then I'll usually help out. As far as antiX goes, it is very rare that I even encounter problems of that magnitude; the same is true for MEPIS. Both of them nearly always work, and they work extremely well for me too!

AntiX is DEFINITELY one of my top favorites; I send my friends over here to try out antiX and have converted a few of them, and I even have my Mom and my neighbor across the street now using antiX too!
