Sounds like some good equipment for small system distros like antiX and Puppy!

Am I reading that right?
A Pentium MMX 149.683MHz!
Memory 47.1/73.8MB!
So maybe that’s a P150, 96M ram?!!!

Found this
never mind i got it working!

the Puppy linux 4.3.1 accepted the ESS1868 audio drive card. i will post the steps for those who are having the same problem i was having.

install the ESS 1868 (ISA or PCI version) and turn on your computer.

once puppy is at the desktop go to setup and then click"setup alsa sound"

after that click ok and wait (maybe a god awful time on pentium mmx systems) and then select the ESS 1868 Plug and play audio drive or other card you may have put in.

proceed as normal. you can also play a sample sound. if you dont hear the sample sound or dont see the speaker in the task bar then restart and it should appear.

if it does not appear then you will need to use a different sound card. here are the ones i found out that are compatible with puppy linux 4.3.1

Creative Sound blaster 32 (not awe)

ESS 1868

Crystal sound 4239

Creative sound blaster ct4750 and 4710
In AntiX control Center Hardware>Configure Sound system. You can try the same steps that was done in Puppy Linux above.

Really enjoying AntiX. Such a clean operating system. Which is just as well. This laptop went from being someone (else)'s junk (God it was slow under XP) to a clean slick system. I prefer to surf the web on this, now, rather than my big Win7 clunker. It runs much faster too with less than 1/20th the RAM and processing power. Impressive work Devs.

Here's my latest, an antiX core implementation I first built a year or so ago, and have modified with the latest antiX 3.3.3 kernel and kept it current with Debian Sid updates. The hardware is a 2007 vintage Gateway 2000 Series 17" portable (too bulky to be called a"laptop", but it does work very well as a mobile desktop).

Code: Select all
