quick thought on the wallpaper chooser...I don't know the origins of the chooser, but can it be set up so that it doesn't close after you press one of the"set" buttons down at the bottom. Not much fits on my eee screen, and I've been setting the wallpaper and then reopening the chooser everytime I try out new wall papers.

Also, the chooser looks in usr/share/wallpapers instead of the /home/"user"/wallpapers, yet the wallpapers are available in both places. Its a little confusing, especially if you add your own wallpapers to /home/"user"/wallpapers and expect them to show up in the chooser. you can of course navigate to whatever folder you want, but the chooser doesn't default to the last used folder, which might also be nice.

Just some thoughts.

I tried running smxi on an USB stick with Antix-live (with persist), but was unable to. Gave me a message about needing /boot/grub/menu.lst.

I was trying to install a liquorix kernel to see if it would pickup my Broadcom 4321 card in my work laptop.

I then tried using synaptic to install the liquorix kernel, but grub was not updated. I ran update-grub and nothing happened.

Is it possible to use smxi with antix in USB? How can I update grub to pickup the kernel that was supposedly installed??

thanks

antiX-M11-pt1-686 onto a Dell P4, 3.2GHz, 1G ram.

Have problem and (so far) a work-around. With or without the noxorg option.

Re: accessing the console (runlevel 3, Ctrl-Alt-F1, or the others except -F7. What is the accepted term, so no confusion?)
Work-around is simply log out from slim, got console access again, log in from gui again, back-and-forth switching seems to work now.

**********************

Tedious details
After finishing install, did ‘reboot’, while CD was shutting down saw message “Disabling IRQ 16“. I presume this is about what the kernel is/has done or trying to do.
On 1st time bootup, before log in, checked the console and saw text (below).
Switched back to gui login screen, did login, back to the console (Ctrl-Alt-F1), now a blank screen and the monitor LED is no longer green.. Same with other tty’s except the -F7.

I don't think so pivera. At least with my experience with AntiX 8.5 persistent USB.
I ended up using ndiswrapper to get wireless going on persistent usb for my EEEpc 701SD because the 2.6.32 smp mepis kernel was missing the .ko for my wireless chip on my EEEPC 701SD.

Man. I don't know if my cdrw disks are at fault or my burner or what so take what I say with a grain of salt.

Spent all day trying to make a good burn on cdrw on a md5sum checked download.

Finally got a cdrw disk to bbbbbbbboooooot to Icewm no Icons.
Got to Desktop. Unfortunately. Everything went downhill for me when trying to connect wirelessly on this Desktop which has no land line since it sits in my motorcycle shop.

As a follow up (screen shot forum limit comes into play here)

I went into /var/log/wicd and looked for error file. wicd folder was empty.

I saved all above screenshots and terminal readout to USB and then booted into my installed Antix 8.5 which works with that Wireless USB listed above.

Notice how gksu rox does not open rox as root. But sux does. Just another conundrum from a nethanderal. __{{emoticon}}__

rok,

i had a similar issue with liveusb wicd. it gave me the same dbus errors as you. It worked fine after install though. One difference for me is that ceni did work for me on the liveusb.

As you can notice, I have a plethora of Muti-boot stuff on this desktop. I use grub4dos to boot. I am learning it instead of learning grub2. I installed grub for Antix to root on /dev/hda7 where testing is sitting.
Only editing I needed to do to get boot was to change root=/dev/sda7 to root=/dev/hda7 and testing booted fine. Connected via wicd as wlan0 using dhclient in preferences.

Gotta go fill out some job applications. Wife wants me back to punching a time clock __{{emoticon}}__ . Says I spend too much time learning Linux. So I guess my CDRW disk was OK because install went without a hitch. I don't know what is up with the live session freaking on me. If I was a new user. I would be all freaked out on what happened previously. I have not tested much yet since install is fresh. Sound is OK. Flash is OK.
Already did my

Code: Select all

# apt-get update
Good thing about using grub 4 dos is I can blow away testing. Then run grub4dos again and it will edit menu entries again. I don't understand everything yet about grub4dos. But it looks like legacy grub to me.

So testing running OK so far (installed).

I've installed AntiX-M11 with AntiX2usb on the usb-stick and gave it a try on my ol' computer (AMD-athlon 1500+). After trying several other distro's for usb-OS I think AntiX is the best for me yet. Everything seems to work OK. Congratulations with another good release to come.
One slight problem though, my Antix continuesly defaults to a en_GB keyboard. Even when I add kbd=us as cheatcode to my menu.lst , I end up with en_GB. Everytime I have to change it manually to"us". It's no big deal but a bit strange. And I had to define my locale in .xinitrc; this also didn't work as cheatcode at bootup. Reading the posts on this topic so far, I think I'm the only one experiencing this problem.

Greetings from wet and windy Holland

installed it on my cousin laptop. it's pretty sweat. the new menu structure is cool. the desktop is ok for a newbie. the icon for files opens rox maybe it should open pcmanfm. it would be nice if the user could import desktop items from the application section in pcmanfm (maybe use pcmanfm desktop when it is more stable). ceni spikes the cpu at 100%, also i think the wireless in live doesn't work for this laptop, and after installation the card is seen and the switch for it but wicd turn empty on a search(need to take a closer look). the conky is unreadable with the current color. i don't know what to say about xmms for new users. pidgin and other programs open links with dillo. in rest all good and antix has become more and more friendly. if i remember anything i'll let you know.

Hannes Wort, if you're using persistence, just edit /etc/default/keyboard to set your preferred one.
You can also run 'dpkg-reconfigure locales' as root and set the preferred one (and also remove the other ones).

Secipolla, thanks for your help.
I allready managed to get the locale right. But now the keyboard-layout is also OK. Thanks!

anti if deadbeef is not a good alternative to gogglesmm. can i ask to update gogglesmm in antix pt1 to a newer version? the version in antix gives a segmentation error when we add new files to the list. this has been fixed by the author on the newest version. i use a deb built for ubuntu and it works. here is the link
