In the tiny realm of menu logic, why is Synaptic lurking under Applications > Preferences? It might as well be removed completely, since no one will think to look for it there. I looked for it first under System, then under Accessories and Internet, then gave up.

I think this is where the upstream puts it. Where is it in Xfce? I mean in MATE it is under Preferecnces, too.

That's bizarre.

I looked in the .desktop file and it contains:

Code: Select all

Categories=PackageManager;GTK;System;Settings;
ISTM we need to have"PackageManager" or"System" override"Settings".

I think, I resolved my issues with video playback on my VIA machine. (Video is slow, audio track ends while video is still playing for tens of seconds.) I'm using xine player. First it seemed that selecting the xxmc output in the settings of xine player doesn't work like it does when launching it from terminal with
xine -V xxmc '/path/to/video.mp4'
But after some testing I found out that it works both ways, just don't select any additional settings besides Settings -> Video -> video driver to use -> xxmc.

I would recommend to test xine, because if it work on my slow machine it might work for others better, too, maybe better than mpv.

When I tried to install xtron or kdegames with synaptic I get an error when I apply

W: Download is performed unsandboxed as root as file '/var/cache/apt/archives/partial/xtron_1.1a-14+b2_amd64.deb' couldn't be accessed by user '_apt'. - pkgAcquire::Run (13: Permission denied)

I found that xtron doesn't seem to work right anyway, and ksnakeduel is a newer version of the same game included in kdegames, which is why I was trying to innstall that.

I found that I can run ksnakeduel from terminal, but if I try it from the menu, it doesn't come up, which is odd.

W: Download is performed unsandboxed as root as file '/var/cache/apt/archives/partial/some_file_name.deb' couldn't be accessed by user '_apt'. - pkgAcquire::Run (13: Permission denied)
I've noticed this, but only occasionally, so I've never previously bother to investigate. Today I found:

========= SCRAPER REMOVED AN EMBEDDED LINK HERE ===========
url was:"https://askubuntu.com/questions/908800/what-does-this-synaptic-error-message-mean%5Bquote"
linktext was:"https://askubuntu.com/questions/908800/ ... mean[quote"

]
aptitude & synaptic utilize the user _apt to download packages.
This error occurs when _apt lacks write permission for either
/var/cache/apt/archives/partial/ or an existing file /var/cache/apt/archives/partial/whatever_file_name.deb
so it downloaded the file as root.

solution:
ensure /var/cache/apt/archives/partial/ and everything below it are writeable for _apt, e.g. by running
sudo chown -Rv _apt:root /var/cache/apt/archives/partial/
sudo chmod -Rv 700 /var/cache/apt/archives/partial/

Thanks skidoo! I will implement that solution in the live-init initrd script. We were already creating that partial/ subdirectory but we weren't doing the chown or the chmod. The live-init script is run chrooted into the final filesystem so it should be aware of the _apt user. Since changes to the live filesystem are carried over during an install, this should fix it for everyone.

Hi. I'm new here and don't understand a lot of what has been said in the preceding discussion.
However, on both the frugal boot from the usb flash drive and the full install, when booting the 32bit version on two diferent 32bit computers i get a"Loading cpufreq kernel modules failed" message during boot, this happens for version 17b2 and 17b3 but not the current 16.2
On the 64bit version of 17b3 (64bit laptop) I have to switch on the wifi every time it boots. In other words it doesn't automatically connect whereas with 16.2 (32bit version on 64bit laptop) it does.
All 17b2 and 17b3 versions give me the pink underlining on the task bar.
I've not noticed any blurry Conky.

Welcome! Thanks for helping us debug.

I will look into this. I think it is related to what kernel modules are compiled. It is an annoying message but it is benign. Cutting back annoying Debian boot message is like cutting back weeds. Or Kudzu.

It works here. There is a short delay (10 seconds?) before the network connects. There was an issue with bugs in loading firmware causing a very long delay before the network started on some machines but that seemed to be fixed in b3. What do you mean by"switch on the wifi"? Did you need to select the network and enter the password again? What tool did you use, ceni or wicd? In antiX-full, both tools appear in the"Networking" tab of the control centre. I've had good luck with ceni even though the interface is command line oriented. Even on the live system, the password is remembered and the network comes up automatically.

Is this problem on both live and installed? We can't remember anything on a live-cd/dvd or on a live-usb made with the"dd" command. If you have one of those you can create a real live-usb after you boot by plugging in a new usb-stick and running the live-usb-maker-gui command. It will offer to clone your live system onto the new usb stick.
All 17b2 and 17b3 versions give me the pink underlining on the task bar.

It is usually extreme helpful if we have information about your machine. The command"inxi -F" will print out most of the useful information we need. Open up a terminal window, run"inxi -F" (no quotes) and then try to copy and paste the output into a post here inside of [ code ] ... [ /code ] tags (no spaces). Here is an example:

To turn on the wifi I clicked on control centre, then Network in the left-hand column then connect wirelessly, then switch on wifi, then refresh and then click connect on my network, which then connects fine - i don't have to re-type the password.
Automatically connect to this network is already selected.

I guess maybe i just need it to switch on the wifi automatically?!

I notice that Synaptic Package Manager is in the Preferences category rather than the System Tools category in the Applications menu.

Also, UNetbootin is omitted from the Systems Tools category. Is it planned to no longer offer it? If so, is there going to be a replacement?

I love the new wallpaper options.
