In case you didn't notice, Iceweasel came with an incompatible version of Greasemonkey.

Another little detail: I saw that the check box"I read it" (or something like that) in the MEPIS Installer in the Lincense Terms page is untranslated. Also I looked for it in Launchpad's page but didn't find any entry (I didn't search much), maybe there's no entry for the translation yet.

anti, maybe when antiX 8.5 goes final it should come with the new grub (former grub2).

edit- I guess it will come when the MEPIS installer is updated (along with ext4 support).

I installed antiX-M8.5-full-test1 over the top of my previous installation. Install went flawlessly. Web browser response seemed sluggish, so I tried out the Seamonkey Nightly instance that I had in my previous installation, upgraded to the current nightly, and still found some sluggishness, but not as much as with Iceweasel. The sluggishness was not merely with the speed of browser rendering, but also the speed of moving between tabs.

Rebooted to sidux to check the Seamonkey Nightly there. Changing tabs was"the normal speed" that I've come to expect, but browsing speed was not up to par there either. Checking traceroute, my ISP seems to have issues tonight. With the lighthttpd server and a few other network objects enabled by default in antiX, it could be that these things were chewing up CPU with the networking issue, so before proclaiming the build sluggish, I want to try it again when my ISP's network is back to normal.

Meanwhile, feature wise, everything installed as cleanly as always and gave that same positive experience that I have come to expect. Because of other system related issues this evening, I am not going to draw any conclusions at all until I get more data. At this point, I am merely making this note and will check back when I have more data to report.

Looking forward to seeing a few experimental builds with various browser alternatives. I like the Seamonkey idea and I hope it gets more traction. Puppy uses it with good results; maybe we can too.

There may be something acting up somewhere in antiX because sidux is definitely behaving more responsively, in spite of the networking issues - which appeared to be a possible DNS issue with my ISP. When I replaced the DNS server with OpenDNS, that helped some, but I was still getting above average CPU usage from the X server on antiX, something that I am not experiencing on sidux. Will monitor this situation again another evening, but for now, I am wondering if there may actually be an issue, since the two times I booted sidux, I did not see the overall response issue, though I did see slower network response. The network and the response are now better on sidux; could be that the ISP issue is now resolved; will check it out again to see, with a larger sample size, if it was the networking issue that was creating a CPU bottleneck or if it is something else. It does make me wonder...

I have never seen response issues before with any previous installation of antiX.

masinick, as i remember, you have a thinkpad, if it has intel graphics, it will run sluggish and the cpu will tend to be very jumpy. until all the trouble with the intel drivers are fixed, antix will run sluggish on the new xorg. on my install i can't even see a movie without freezing the system.

the good:
wireless connection solid 97%

streamtuner & sound working

Screenshot with iceweasel abiword, painting, roxterm, htop, streamtuner, gnumeric all running!.
Actually runs better on this old rig than my Dell 700M as far as video, due to the intel in the 700M.

Just finished install of Testing. Kept my settings intact in /home partition. Saved Conky and Wallpaper came up OK. Saved Icewm Taskbar config did not come up.

Wicd is having a Hissy fit for some reason.

Code: Select all

Could not connect to wicd's D-Bus interface. Check the wicd log for error messages.
Haven't looked for wicd log yet to see what is going on yet. Install is only a Few minutes old. Would save me some time if anybody could point me to where wicd log file is.

Connected wirelessly via rutilt.

You need to enable wicd in the startup files in icewm/fluxbox

Startup (stock) haven't touched it yet .fluxbox

Code: Select all

# fluxbox startup-script:
#
# Lines starting with a '#' are ignored.

# You can set your favourite wallpaper here if you don't want
# to do it from your style.
#
# fbsetbg -l
#
# This sets a black background

#/usr/bin/fbsetroot -solid black

# This shows the fluxbox-splash-screen
# fbsetbg -C /usr/share/fluxbox/splash.jpg

# Other examples. Check man xset for details.
#
# Turn off beeps:
# xset -b
#
# Increase the keyboard repeat-rate:
# xset r rate 195 35
#
# Your own fonts-dir:
# xset +fp ~/.font
#
# Your favourite mouse cursor:
# xsetroot -cursor_name right_ptr
#
# Change your keymap:
# xmodmap ~/.Xmodmap

##eval `cat ~/.fehbg` &

# Applications you want to run with fluxbox.
# MAKE SURE THAT APPS THAT KEEP RUNNING HAVE AN ''&'' AT THE END.
#
# unclutter -idle 2 &
# wmnd &
# wmsmixer -w &
# idesk &
# ivman &
# rox -pinboard=antiX &

 wicd-client &

########## PLAY STARTUP SOUND #########
##play /usr/share/sounds/Pardus_Rocks/Pardus_Rocks-Logout.ogg > /dev/null 2>&1 &
rm $HOME/.config/nitrogen/bg-saved.cfg
ln -s $HOME/.config/nitrogen/bg-saved-fb.cfg $HOME/.config/nitrogen/bg-saved.cfg
nitrogen --restore &

# And last but not least we start fluxbox.
# Because it is the last app you have to run it with ''exec'' before it.

exec /usr/bin/fluxbox
# or if you want to keep a log:
# exec /usr/bin/fluxbox -log ~/.fluxbox/log

sleep 2 && wicd-client & is in .icewm startup

Rebooted. Will try removing wicd and reinstalling. rutilt doesn't come up on reboot. Have to start over to connect. Also rutilt locks up after agreeing to use new profile. screeny below
