drg. I ran into something like that on my AntiX 8.5 install on this laptop. Happened after latest dist-upgrade. That was why I just said screw it and installed AntiX11 rc1 over my 8.5 install.

All I can suggest is a few commands to test

Code: Select all

sudo shutdown

Code: Select all

sudo reboot
as root

Code: Select all

shutdown -h now

Code: Select all

shutdown -r now
I am in FVWM-crystal right now. So kinda lost myself

Ok, here's a picture of antix11-core in this very old laptop (about 12 years old). First
the specs of the box

System: Host old-laptop Kernel 2.6.32-1-mepis-smp i686 (32 bit)

Client Shell inxi 1.4.12

I'm running 8.5 now, but Antix11-RC1 livecd booted up just fine with
the xorg cheats option.

Now, a picture of the Antix11-core:

That's running tmux with 2 windows open. 5 panes in the first window with elinks; ranger file manager; htop; a terminal so I can use fbgrab for the shot and a clock. With all of that, and still only 38 MB ram. A thing of beauty, ain't it?

Downloaded and made a live usb install of m11 rc-1, all is okay so far. Will do some more testing, for now what I see:

- antixcc has change cursor theme, which opens another window before the cursor theme change. Is there a reason for the extra window, maybe the antixcc entry should open the cursor theme change itself.
- pressing control + alt + f1,f2,f3... does not fully change the tty terminal

I grabbed the antiX-M11-rc1 base image and I am running it live on my Gateway 2000 series PA6A 17" portable. Smooth and clean, as was the case with the previous full PT version. Looking good for release.

Got the base CD of M11 rc1. Some good news and some bad news.. The look is improved and the cd ejects at shutdown.

But - the pause at live boot is too short imho - 10 -20 secs is good to help old ppl like me assimilate what is on the screen before takeoff.

Better still - wait forever until user selects an option.

On a Dell D610 laptop with intel ipw2200 wifi the internet connection dropped out frequently. Don't have hard data but looked like losing the dhcp lease. Every 10 minutes or so roughly. Scientific Linux 6 mini live CD with NetworkManager showed no such problems on same gear and network connection immediately following. Haven't seen this before with antiX

It would be nice to be able to move between desktops using CTRL+ALT+arrow right or left - this doesn't seem to be enabled at present.

On a generic desktop, VIA mobo, Duron 900 and GeForce FX5200, with a Compaq 1280x1024 17"LCD attached, came up with 1024x768 and didn't seem to know about any higher def modes. Default boot, haven't looked at any boot options.

Few quick thoughts - will try on some other machines and check wifi again.

By saying “On doing a logout from the gui”, I meant changing to a different user, or to start a new session with a different WM.
Is there a command to use in a terminal to do either of these logout options, still within say icewm?

Doing a shutdown from the gui eg icewm is no problem.

I just recommended antiX to a friend at the Newbies Linux forum at
========= SCRAPER REMOVED AN EMBEDDED LINK HERE ===========
url was:"http://newbieslinux.com/"
linktext was:"http://newbieslinux.com/"
====================================
. He wants to build his own system from scratch and was considering trying"Linux From Scratch". I said, OK, if that's what you want to do and you ultimately want to create an entire system from scratch components, that is a wonderful idea, but even Linus Torvalds got his start using MINIX, and bootstrapped his first kernel on a MINIX file system, and he grafted the GNU utilities onto his system before ever attempting to create his own file system - which he later accomplished.

I recommended antiX core as a great place to build his own system from scratch and I also told him that my most highly customized system is a system I built myself from antiX core.

So I am still out there, trying to get the word out about antiX and its many benefits. Of course, antiX base also makes a good starting point if you want to have a GUI in place as you are creating something, and we also know that Jason Hsu has done a nice job building"Swift Linux" from antiX full, so not only do I know that antiX makes a great place to build from (as does SimplyMEPIS), I've also personally used many examples, and I've done it myself too. In my case, I originally built my own system starting with antiX core and choosing LXDE and Xfce. I wanted to do some studies to see which one worked best for my needs. Knowing that eriefisher has had good success with his own creation for several years already, and he has Xfce, I figured that's probably what I'd end up enjoying, because I also happen to really like Xfce, and that turned out to be the case for me too.

But I couldn't leave"well enough" alone. I morphed that core instance - at least for now, into a hodge podge of desktop environments that I test for a variety of reasons.

Whatever way you want to go, and for however long you want to do it, my story is that you can do it, both quickly and easily with antiX. Then you can dismantle it all (if you want) and start over, or have multiple versions for multiple purposes. I know that Arch fans like their approach and Linux From Scratch fans like their's, and frankly, the underlying software that we build on is fantastic, and I am glad that we have all the alternatives available to us that we do, but for me, I remain a big fan of the antiX approach, and I am excited about the looming release.

You are not the only one Gnomic. Same, Same for me. Only way I can keep connection in wicd with wireless so far is to use in wicd>preferences>advanced settings>use dbm to measure signal strength to get a strong connection and no drops in wicd. I've been searching to see what is up with

Code: Select all

~$ apt-cache policy wicd
wicd:
  Installed: 1.7.0+ds1-6
  Candidate: 1.7.0+ds1-6
  Version table:
and ipw2200 but no luck so far. My previous 8.5 install did not have this problem either.

If I uncheck use dbm to measure signal strength. Wicd signal strength goes to red and drops my connection then goes to green, then back to red and so on. Any reconnect connects and drops in a second. Scratching my head on wonderment on this one. My Network is open also so encryption not a issue here.

Some pertinent info

Hello folks,

I experienced the same problems with Synaptic, thanks roky for the solution for fixing the quick search.

I have noticed that when on websites that have some acitve flash advertising I do not see the add. I see the space where the add should exist, but in the center there is the letter F and that will change into an arrow. I must click on it for it to play. I see it here on our forum with the adds and also see it on you tube. I think that once I click on it, it becomes"activated" and I don't need to click on it again.

I also cannot get sgfxi to work. When I try to install either ati drivers or radeon 4200 the screen will go black. The other pt(s) 1 and 2 did not do this.

Thanks,
Dave

Thank roky for the flash block info. I never needed to adjust adjust that initially, so it never crossed my mind.

I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong with sgfxi though. Argh...

adblock is a new feature. Useful for those with low RAM so they don't get bogged down when surfing the net.

Thanks anti. Is that the same as adblocker plus, but"built in" and already working?

Well anyway, I'm not sure that I can add the radeon driver using sgfxi. Seems I have some dependency problems. I think that I cannot install because I need to add libc6-dev and libc-dev. I believe that they are what I saw that I needed before my screen went black.

From the terminal:
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
libc6-dev : Depends: libc6 (= 2.11.2-10) but 2.11.2-11 is to be installed
E: Broken packages
Is this something that I should force install?

Thanks,
Dave
