I am new to Linux and have just installed the latest version of antiX on my IBM T22 Thinkpad as a dual boot. I am using a Linksys Wireless-G adapter model WPC54G Ver 2. It works fine in MS W2k, but when I boot antiX the power light does not come on and doing a search does not find it. There is still much I don't understand about the workings on Linux, so if there is a solution to my problem please make it simple for me to understand.

Howdy and Welcome. Can you post what

Code: Select all

inxi -F
gives you in TERMINAL (Taskbar icon in full)

It will give us info on the pcmcia card. I run a T23 and a A22M with pcmcia wireless so should be no problem getting you going with other members
helping while I am out sick.

Some recommended videos for you

If you following the directions, here's a couple of points:

1. the directions don't say it, but you should be in your home directory when you start at the terminal.
2. This line is wrong:
mv acx-mac80211 /usr/src/acx-mac80211-git

should be

mv acx100-acx-mac80211 /usr/src/acx-mac80211-git

3. I tried the steps, and everything seemed to work. The module loading at the end failed for me, but I don't have your chip so maybe that's why. The firmware install went fine though.

I do appreciate all of your help, but what you have given me is so far above my understanding that it puts my head in a spin. I have spent far too much time already trying to get an understanding of Linux. I have tried and tried to understand the Linux way, but it is just not sinking in. Looks like for now I am stuck with W2k on this laptop.

Yes! Same here! It's been over ten years now. __{{emoticon}}__

You can do it! You have to try, stop for a beer, try some more, and many beers later it all becomes clear. The thing with Linux is it only does what you tell it to do, unlike Windoze which tries to do what Bill Gates wants.

Is the Wireless switched on? Sorry I'm not much help, I use an Ethernet cable.

I am sure those write ups are fine, but they are above my level of understanding. I have not a clue on making those additions. Windows is so elementary compared to Linux.

Linux is similar to the old DOS we had to learn when PC's first came out. DOS was based on Unix, upon which Linux is based. You may not learn everything about Linux commands in a few days. It does take time if you have some structure to learn it properly.

There are many websites which teach Linux to beginners. Try to find one that takes you step by step through individual commands like this one:

It will teach you the various commands as you need them. Following the answers most of the regulars post as your answer will help you to learn it.

BEWARE of TYPOS. They can cause headaches trying to correct them.

You are like me, from the generation who was taught, NEVER GIVE UP.

Alanarchy,
That is the problem, the wireless card does not switch on when I boot antix. I supposed that is why I need to make the changes. I am trying to do this on an old T22 Thinkpad, which I am finding out is a challenge. It currently has W2k, which does not work well with some software and sites today. Someone suggested a different card (D link) where currently I am running a Linksys card and had plenty of trouble getting it to work with W2k. I am about ready to scrap the T22 and buy a refurb from TigerDirect.

What switches my Ethernet card on is

Code: Select all

wicd-client -t &

which is in /Fluxbox/startup. I assume the wireless has a start code to go in Fluxbox, or whatever Window Manager you are using.

Your problem seems to be the fact that the kernel module for your wifi is not present so can not be loaded. You need to understand a bit more about the way things work in Linux to make progress with that machines wifi connection.
Take a look at the links in my 'sig' for some help with understanding more about Linux.
If you do go ahead & buy another machine, take a live CD with you & try it on the machine(s) first.
(Remember, we were all newbies - & please keep the T22 to try things out on.)

fatmac,
Thanks much for the encouragement. I really do want to learn this stuff. When I went to download (PDF) the first book you have listed, the site re-directed me to something else.

Never mind, I searched and found it on another site.

Sorry you got re routed - link still works OK for me.
I still think that it is a good introduction for a beginner.
Enjoy your read & linux journey.

I am back working at this again. I am trying to work through the write up in the link:
========= SCRAPER REMOVED AN EMBEDDED LINK HERE ===========
url was:"https://wiki.debian.org/acx"
linktext was:"https://wiki.debian.org/acx"
====================================

I entered the lines as in the write up and nothing happens until I get to: $ git clone git://git.code.sf.net/p/acx100/acx-mac80211 acx100-acx-mac80211
When I hit enter after that line, it says command not found.

Another thing, when there is more than one line, it puts my computer name between each line.
Apparently I am doing something wrong.
