I also use Pcmanfm on my laptop running Antix 8 test 1(not public release) and have had no problems. Just like Erie said, my usb drives are recognized when I plug them in and I can unmount them easily.

I habe 4 different types of USD-HDs and 2 different types of USB-Stocks and also one SDMM (via Card-Reader) and they work all very well in PCMan, I plug them in and they're mounted. __{{emoticon}}__

I now wonder if the mounting problems are really more hardware related because of all the trouble I had with my"new" laptop (a PIII Dell Latitude) a few days ago. It has only one usb port, and I now know that the voltage/current at the port is not quite up to standards because of the the way it interacted with an external usb hd. Anyway that is the machine that I prefer to use with thunar because it's consistent, and rox and pcmanfm weren't. I used rox to mount on my old PII laptop, but can't unmount except in a terminal as root.
I am just wondering if those of you who have no problems mounting anything have newer equipment; I have never had problems with usb on any desktop, only the old laptops.

mariel77,
Don't know if this will apply to your usb hd problem, but I have an older laptop, and I have found some of the longer usb cables are a little flaky, on one of my usb hd's it does not matter, but on my western digital usb hd, the longer cable is problematic, so I have a short cable that I use with that drive, and I have not encounterd any problems since using only this cable with that drive.
cheers,

Mariel:
I have Antix8 loaded in a Dell Inspiron 7500 that's about 10 years old. It only has 1 usb port. In that box, PCManfm still works fine, picks up my USB key and unmounts without any problem. Perhaps you had it right about the voltage problem in your port.

This is a really good suggestion. I actually have a cable that is really short (~10 cm). The drive still fluttered in and out though. I really think that the usb port is a little loose from the board, but I'm not going to take it apart now to look at it. I'll just keep using a 4GB stick or maybe try an ac powered hub sometime for the hard drive. Thanks.oldhoghead wrote:mariel77,

Upthread somebody mentioned moving to the development version of icewm (currently icewm-testing, version 1.3.3). Poked around on packages.debian.org and the newest I could find was 1.2.36-1 in unstable/sid. That's what the ice folks consider their stable version. Couldn't find any versions of icewm in experimental.
Just for grins, I compiled and installed icewm-testing 1.3.3 and it didn't require any new packages. I did not have to install libimlib2 or libimlib2-dev. Am now running 1.3.3, but it's so new (to me) I haven't noticed any problems. If I had a vote, it would be to stay with icewm-stable, 1.2.36, for the upcoming release.
On another front, the first thing I found missing from antiX-M8-public-test1 was any flavor of vi/vim. Would you consider including vim-tiny in the final release? If this has already been discussed, pointers to the back story would be appreciated.

vim-tiny now included.
antiX does come with nano, a nice cli editor.
For this release icewm will be the one in the Debian repos.

Any reason M8 can't ship with SMPlayer instead of GMPlayer? SMPlayer works more reliably on my ancient laptop and looks a lot better too. Also GMPlayer doesn't seem to be available via Synaptic unless I am missing something.

gmplayer is actually mplayer.
mplayer is chosen as it is very lite and versatile.
smplayer can be easily installed via synaptic.

'You can boot antiX from usb stick.
I used unetbootin, but you have to make some edits.'
WHAT edits ???
I get 'cannot find mepis file system' and a kernel loop..

thanx!!
got 7.5 base onto sd card on eee 701, but it will not boot,
gives the message that mepis seems to be especially good at generating:
kernel panic, cannot find root fs on 0,0
--0,0 is not right btw, cannot be
it also gets a grub error if i remove the usb stick so obviously that got included in the grub install
(xubuntu eee did not do that but it could not even set up cable network though supposed to have drivers for all eepc hardware)
