Just in case anyone wants to experiment at a relatively low level, the X server itself provides resources that can be set (if not overridden by either a display manager, a window manager, or a desktop manager.
One site that has a discussion and examples for using these resources is

For example, long ago, I used to
xsetroot -cursor_name top_left_arrow
then use either .Xdefaults, .xresources, or an application specific resource file to modify the shape and color of the pointer.
The X server has some fundamental resources, including pointerColor, pointerColorBackground, and pointerShape that can be manipulated if not otherwise obscured by the application in use.
I rarely have to fool around with these resources any more. Most window managers, display managers, and desktop managers have themes that include wallpapers, backgrounds, and pointer colors. The *-look projects have a lot of these: the KDE-look project is one example:

Does your desktop have a swap file or partition? If not, hibernate will fail.OU812 wrote:I wrote a suspend and hibernate script using the post from Gullible Jones. The hibernate option worked flawlessly. The suspend option gave me the following errors:
(I guess using a desktop to test these features was pretty stupid.) Any ideas on the suspend? Does this mean that my laptop doesn't support this option? Is there a workaround? Etc? Thanks for the reply. Yes, I do have a swap partition ~ 1 gig.

Hmm, weird. I'm Googling around but I can't seem to find the cause of that error...

Never mind - I got confused. I was running the livecd when I was testing the suspend and hibernate options on the laptop. Of course hibernate worked since it suspends to ram, but suspend didn't work since I was running the livecd and there was no swap partition. (I got confused between my desktop and laptop specs. My bad.) Thanks!

Another suggestion, hopefully not too late... Switching to the devel version of IceWM might be nice. The stable version uses the ancient and unmaintained imlib, which depends on the ancient and unmaintained gtk1; whereas the devel version IIRC depends on imlib2.
BTW, regarding the situation with ROX and ivman - is there a way to mount things in ROX without using ivman, e.g. with just pmount? If so, you might want to use it - as mentioned before, ivman is unmaintained at the moment and quite buggy.

One more thing - the current M8 test is not bootable from a USB stick, as it looks for the compressed filesystem on a CD. It really should be bootable from a USB stick.

I'll look at the dev version of icewm, but I'm not promising anything.
Maybe for the next release cycle.
Rox and pmount works, but erratically it seems.
ivman does work ok on some boxes it seems, but not others.
You can boot antiX from usb stick.
I used unetbootin, but you have to make some edits.
I also used the script by m_pav and that worked too.

Thanks for a really nice distro! __{{emoticon}}__
On M8 public test 1, I installed thunar-volman and so now I use thunar to mount my usb sticks. I know it takes too much room, but I really like it. On the laptop I am using I have to boot with the stick inserted, but then it mounts and unmounts, and I can change sticks too. I couldn't do that with only rox and ivman, and pcmanfm didn't work well either. Sometimes it mounted and sometimes it didn't.anticapitalista wrote:Rox and pmount works, but erratically it seems.

Just wanted to echo Mariel77's sentiment. Thunar is big but it works with my usb drives....so I keep using it.

Maybe we don't need all of the thunar depends? TinyFlux, a pclinuxos spin-off, uses thunar and it's a small and light distro. It may be too late to include thunar in this release, but it may be something to consider for the next.

P.S. I installed emelfm2 and it has the same problems as rox and pcmanfm. So if you attach a usb device after booting, you need to use pymount to mount the device. And even then you need to navigate to /media.

Strange. I use Pcmanfm on all my machines and all devices usb/cd show up when plugged in. They will also unmount them with a right click. Occasionally it will refuse to unmount a device.
With my laptop I use xfce and thunar with thunar volume manager and it has zero trouble with devices. I would have to check on the dependencies for stand alone use.
