Space-IceWM Desktop Icons
On some boots the icons are present, sometimes there are no icons at all on the desktop. A timing issue or race condition perhaps?
Edit
removed speculation found to be invalid after further tests on delay timing

there is a delay setting in etc/desktop-session/desktop-session.conf that holds up loading of a session while the wm finishes loading. that might be worth a shot.
hmmm... I've seen the rox-pinboard not come up in a rox-icewm session on my ancient sony.SamK wrote:Space-IceWM Desktop Icons

Re: Space-IceWM Desktop Icons
After many tests using various values, in every one of them, altering the delay value has zero effect on the showing of the invisible mouse cursor. In 100% of cases tested, it remains invisible until an app window is opened.
It looks like we are dealing with separate faults. Conflating the matters is misleading so I will remove the reference to the invisible mouse in my post about the desktop icons.

Because of the intermittent nature of the fault it is problematical to say whether altering the delay value has an effect on the showing of the desktop icons.anticapitalista wrote:Another cheat to try that sets the desktop delay time.

Re: Invisible Mouse Cursor
From the following it seems reasonable to conclude the problem is not directly related to the age of the kit.
2 laptops, 8 years difference in age
Older system: mouse cursor is visible
Younger system: mouse cursor is invisible

Yes, you are right, there are also other ways to work around the problem. We are trying to establish what is causing it so antiX can ship without the user needing to employ a workaround to obtain a fully working system out-of-the-box.darry1966 wrote:This happened to me in the ICEWM desktop I pressed CTRL-ALT-DEL and went into JWm problem solved.

Re- no mouse cursor.
We need to find out what is causing this. I do not see this behaviour on my desktop, nor the old P111 nor the netbook (new lenovo).
Was b1 ok?
Is it only when running live or when installed? If installed - on every boot?
For those with the issue (installed) try this in a root terminal
update-alternatives --config x-cursor-theme
Also, just to see if the issue is related only to the default cursor setting.
Anyone with this issue, run live, but choose dark theme in F6 boot menu. (ignore whether you like this theme or not, it is irrelevant to the test). Does cursor show (it should be white)

I reported this for b1, but have not seen it on b2, live or installed.
BUT I am testing it on a different laptop, so will take a look at the original one.

Re: Invisible Mouser Cursor
To establish the extent of the problem the following is the result of a series of live boots, where each of the desktop settings were selected in turn.
For *IceWM and *Fluxbox the mouse cursor can be shown by restarting the WM via their respective menu entries.
The symptoms are very reminiscent of those I reported throughout the alpha and beta tests of antiX-15. The problem remains unresolved. It was not encountered in releases prior to 15. The suspicion is towards session stuff that was introduced in 15.

Does video chipset make a difference? Xorg xserver also received a major update between Wheezy and jessie and that would matter greatly to mouse issues.

Now live on the 32bit machine I used for b1, and the cursor is still invisible against the desktop, but visible inside Iceweasel.
Workaround I reported for b1 still works: use right-click to see Menu > Applications > Preferences > Customize Look and Feel. As soon as that dialogue box opens, the cursor becomes visible (as with b1).

A bit doubtful about these as they presumably would also affect the *JWM desktops.dolphin_oracle wrote:Does video chipset make a difference? Xorg xserver also received a major update between Wheezy and jessie and that would matter greatly to mouse issues.

Are the cursor problems only with intel graphics?
