The following series of incremental tests lead from 16-b2.1 as shipped with the mouse cursor and IceWM monitor problems, through to a final position of both of them working. I am able to repeat this on demand so it seems valid.

Preparation
Fresh USB installation using 16-b2.1

Enable root persistence, semi-automatic
desktop=space-icewm vga=791 persist_root lang=en_GB quiet splash=off disable=lx

At desktop
Restart IceWM to show cursor

Ensure etc/network/interfaces contains my wired network interface (eth1) via ceni

Unistall shipped xserver-xorg-video-intel
Install Debian xserver-xorg-video-intel (because we know it works)

Enable IceWM taskbar monitors CPU, Network (eth1)

Shutdown saving changes to persistent storage

Test1
From Cold Boot
desktop-session chain: enabled
autologin: enabled
desktop=min-icewm vga=791 persist_root lang=en_GB quiet
IceWM monitors CPU, Net, in taskbar tray
Result:
Monitors: Frozen
Mouse Cursor: Work

Restart IceWM via antiX Menu
Result:
Monitors: Work

Configuration Changes
Force manual login for user demo
Enable demo as default user
Enable demo for automatic login
Apply
Disable demo as default user
Disable demo for automatic login
Apply

Shutdown saving changes to persistent storage

Test2
From Cold Boot
desktop-session chain: enabled
autologin: disabled
desktop=min-icewm vga=791 persist_root lang=en_GB quiet
IceWM monitors CPU, Net, in taskbar tray
Result:
Monitors: Frozen

Restart IceWM via antiX Menu
Result:
Monitors: Work

Check status of desktop-session

Code: Select all

ps -e | grep desktop-session
 3949 ? 00:00:00 desktop-session
Configuration Changes
None

Shutdown without saving changes to persistent storage to preserve state of changes made in Test1

Test3
From Cold Boot
Boot to Console
desktop-session chain: disabled
autologin: disabled
desktop=min-icewm vga=791 persist_root lang=en_GB quiet 3

Login as demo
startx to exclude desktop-session

IceWM monitors CPU, Net, in taskbar tray
Result:
Monitors: Work

Check status of desktop-session

Code: Select all

ps -e | grep desktop-session
Nothing returned

Conclusions
Automatic login is highly likely to be contributing to the problem
The desktop-session chain is definitely contributing to the problem
Potentially creating and saving these settings is compensating for invalid or missing ones in the ISO/live environment

I would agree that something in the launching of the desktop sequence (at least on the first run) is causing the monitors to freeze. I don't think your tests can conclude that autologin is contributing, especially since autologin happens before the wm even launches (and before desktop-session does it's thing for that matter).

The following is a test to determine whether autologin is contributing to problem. This is essentially a repeat of Test2 with the states of desktop-session chain and autologin reversed.

Preparation
Fresh USB installation using 16-b2.1, prepared exactly the same as for the most recently posted tests.

Test4
From Cold Boot
Boot to Console
desktop=min-icewm vga=791 persist_root lang=en_GB quiet 3
desktop-session chain: disabled
autologin: enabled

Login as demo
startx to exclude desktop-session

IceWM monitors CPU, Net, in taskbar tray
Result:
Monitors: Work

Conclusions
Automatic login is not contributing to the problem
The desktop-session chain is contributing to the problem
Potentially creating and saving these settings is compensating for invalid or missing ones in the ISO

ROX-Filer Action Open as Text

Opening a plain text file that has spaces in its name is operating incorrectly.

Boot live using default desktop
vga=791 lang=en_GB quiet disable=lx

Create text file

Code: Select all

echo"ipsum lorem" >"plain text file.txt"
Navigate to the file in ROX-Filer
Click on the file to open it
Word splitting is performed on the file name and a file per word is opened in geany.
The same result is obtained when within ROX-Filer a right-click-->Open As Text is performed on the file
Invalid editor action produced by ROX-Filer

the problem is in the default run action

Code: Select all

desktop-defaults-run -te
accepts arguments with spaces as multiple file names, even if you"escape" the spaces.

the"open with geany" and"open with leafpad" actions work.

spacefm does not use"editor.desktop" by default, so the problem doesn't appear there. However, if you set the text open action to /usr/share/applications/antix/editor.desktop, the behavior is the same as rox-filer.

16-b2.1.iso creation by running xdelta3 on 16-b1.iso and 16-b1-b2.1.delta (as per the wiki linked by anticapitalista on page 1) run damn well.
Took a couple of minutes to download, generate and checksum the result on a Core i3 __{{emoticon}}__

Re: High CPU

The high CPU load has again been observed. This time while using the Debian xserver-xorg-video-intel driver.

I suspect it might have something to do with suspending a live USB session. After a couple of hours the system was revived from the suspended state. In this condition, high CPU and active fans are present. For example the smallest movement of the mouse cursor imediately raises CPU from 2% to 100% and switches on the fan.

same problem with any thing called with desktop-defaults-run script. the script does not handle file names with spaces (tested with te (texteditor) and i (image viewer).

Idea for Other Desktops Menu

The current presentation in the menu gives an unkempt look which is not immediately understanadble.
Current presentation of Other Desktops menu
Current presentation of Other Desktops menu

I suspect most users will probably choose the visual style of the desktop first, then whether or how icons are displayed on the desktop.

Suggestion
It might be more obvious to present the Other Desktop menu items in that way.

menu. hello SamK. the brain infers activity of align left , or , center..., so that makes it read okay for us; too that's twelve languages. good with the right to left readers, eh? ready. meantime find button"Edit Menus" for your style, configuration, customization, organization, for your next remaster. the style on this machine here prefers center the menu items. thanks for passing along the best.

Hello! __{{emoticon}}__

AntiX-16 b2.1 (and MX-15, too) fails to boot from USB-devices with UASP (

).
The kernel module

Code: Select all

/lib/modules/xxx/kernel/drivers/usb/storage/uas.ko
is missing from initrd.gz.

Booting"sparkylinux"

from the same USB device works;
this distro has a UASP kernel module in initrd.gz.

dmesg from a system with one 'classic' USB device and one UASP USB device when
booting sparky. look for 'uas' at 2.757701 and 2.750475:

When booting antiX from this UASP device, the"usb-storage" device is assigned
to it. AntiX fails to find the (vfat)filesystem on the partition and times out after 15
seconds.

This happens on USB 3.0 and USB 2.0 ports.

kind regards,
andré

Thanks a lot!
If you need some further testing just ask.
Should I report this to MX-15 maintainer, too, or are you handling this internally?

Clock in IceWM Taskbar

The clock in the IceWM taskbar freezes in a similar manner to the IceWM taskbar monitors.

Test1 Reference Point
From Cold Boot
nosavestate desktop=fluxbox vga=791 lang=en_GB quiet
desktop-session chain: enabled
Fluxbox clock in taskbar tray
Result:
Clock: Initially shows incorrect time. Automatically updates to correct time within approx 1 minute

Check status of desktop-session

Code: Select all

ps -e | grep desktop-session
 3174 ? 00:00:00 desktop-session

Test2
From Cold Boot
nosavestate desktop=icewm vga=791 lang=en_GB quiet
desktop-session chain: enabled
IceWM clock in taskbar tray
Result:
Clock: Frozen at incorrect time and does not automatically update after waiting several minutes

Restart IceWM via antiX Menu
Result:
Clock: Shows correct time

Check status of desktop-session

Code: Select all

ps -e | grep desktop-session
 3498 ? 00:00:00 desktop-session

Test3
From Cold Boot
Boot to Console
nosavestate desktop=icewm vga=791 lang=en_GB quiet 3
desktop-session chain: disabled

Login as demo
startx to exclude desktop-session

IceWM clock in taskbar tray
Result:
Clock: Shows correct time

Check status of desktop-session

Code: Select all

ps -e | grep desktop-session
Nothing returned

Conclusions
There is nothing in the hardware preventing the clock updating, demonstrated by Fluxbox test
desktop-session stuff is contributing to problem; clock fails when desktop-session in circuit, works when desktop-session is out of circuit
