Please try xorg=savage and see if that works for you. It should cause the X server to try to use the savage driver.
Like Chris's machine. My screen started to load. Got to a mouse pointer on a black screen. Then mouse froze up solid.
I did not wait long to see if screen would finish loading. I have seen this behavior before in the early alphas with
me and you.

So I figured the cpu was being being beat up on like before. So just did a hard shutdown.
I still have to feed the dogs and do some other chores BitJam.

I will be back later after I do the hard drive swap and install. Vesa looks like the way to go with these these
Savage chip laptops till Xorg and Savage get their act together, so to speak.

I wish I had a Via graphics chip unit to test on. I have been helping other Linux users else-where on Ubuntu
based distros with Using Vesa on their Via boxes. Everything on theirs is fine till they start browsing.

Then the screen goes all white and they have to do a hard shutdown. Hopefully a member at Mepis Forum or here
has a Via graphics chip box they could run a live test run on.

For the via savage gpu I think you might need to set the color depth to 16 bit in the xorg.conf.

No show stoppers on installing on the IBM T23 Laptop. Later on will dial it in and report on hardware.

usability issues / sources of confusion:

spacefm: Because"root editor" is blank, when user launches spacefm via sudo... and clicks to open a TEXTfile,
winds up with a RoxTerm window and"some dang screen I don't even know how to exit out of" {vim}.
(seems like this detail falls through the cracks every build, I find/report, lather rinse repeat)

(asked previously, and was ignored) Why does a user account named"foo" exist?
Have I been hacked? Maybe it's a new backdoor installed by those RedHat plants inside debian? Should I hurry and delete that account?...

new user test-driving the live iso will (may) read F1 bootscreen help which states"pw demo=demo root=root"...
...then, during the session, at the gExec prompt"run ___ [ ] Run as root" will attempt to supply root password.
(nothing new here, and aside from possibly squeezing another line into bootscreen F1 help sudo pw = demo, I can't think of a"solution")

(known issue) PersonalMenu empty + fluxbox: WTF means"Retry" ?

(known issue) at bootscreen, user chooses"Root persist"... but during first-run, during persistence setup,
gets a msg stating"home persistence was requested but..."
(user wonders:"Did I choose the right bootscreen selection?)

(known issue) can select"no image, solid color" when desktop is fluxbox, but can't find that option if desktop is Rox+fluxbox

(expressing my chagrin toward the status quo"fix", er,"design decision"):
Without seeing/knowing what the current xset value for mouse acceleration is, how can user guess what value to fill in? What's the valid range, 0--999 ?
point: users would be better served by controlCenter providing the convenience opening the config file for editing, vs providing"a `fixed` but unhelpful" gui.

iso-snapshot
Tested & successfully created bootable ISOs (tested/compared xz versus gzip) and successfully tested persistence via the created snapshot.

Upon booting the created ISO, I noticed the following quirk logged during boot:
{snip}
LIVE-INIT: localizing/configuring X-windows

Error: Unknown_distro Linux
{snip}
The .conf file for iso-snapshot contains erroneous guidance regarding compression.
It confusingly states"outcomment the following line"
(the following line is not outcommented by default, nor do I believe it ever should be)
and it advises user to choose a string value"zx or gz"
("gz" fails. It must be"gzip"{noquotes})

suggestion: Based on my comparative xz/gzip tests, users would be better served if the .conf declared _gzip_ as the DEFAULT setting for compression.
If someone using this tool intends to boot from CD, and the snapshot ISO"won't fit"... no harm, just re-run the tool and choose the tighter compression.
For everyone else... under the status quo (default=xz) the unpacking will, per my testing, perennially delay each boot session by 6-8 seconds.

We've gone around on this before. But with the new F5-Persist menu we could add a"root-only" entry for you. You are also free to type in"persist=root!".

I don't see a"foo" account on the live system. Therefore ISTM something you did or installed created it.

spacefm: - which TEXT file? All files open via leafpad here.

Why does a user account named"foo" exist? - It doesn't. Where are you seeing this?

PersonalMenu empty + fluxbox: WTF means"Retry" ? - ??????

(known issue) can select"no image, solid color" when desktop is fluxbox, but can't find that option if desktop is Rox+fluxbox - this has been mentioned several times. When using Rox pinboard/desktop, you cannot have just a solid colour. Unless anyone knows how.

I'll probably remove the app since noone is willing to provide a good enough fix.

Wow, I'll recheck"foo" from a factory fresh session. (I thought I did so last night, and that's what prompted my remark).

"PersonalMenu empty + fluxbox: WTF means"Retry" ? - ??????"
Previously reported. Fluxbox menu displays"Retry", iceWM displays a glitchy empty flyout rectangle, JWM renders no flyout (the expected behavior)

"We've gone around on this before. But with the new F5-Persist menu we could add a"root-only" entry for you."
Not needed for me, thanks. I just (re)posted because it's a"from a new user's eyes" issue. Even after seeing it so many times during testing, to me it still seems odd.

"When using Rox pinboard/desktop, you cannot have just a solid colour. Unless anyone knows how."
Yep, I mentioned because it's a bullet point suitable for FAQ or Known Issues

"spacefm: - which TEXT file? All files open via leafpad here."
I'm stumped. I woulda sworn I was testing/reporting observations from a factory fresh session.
login=demo
gExec --} spacefm (as root) --} View--}Preferences
"root's editor" field is blank ...and clicking to open text files results in vim

edit: ^---- config for spacefm is loaded from /root path because (new, as of this release) gExec rootmode=su

Re root spacefm.

You should open spacefm as user and edit any files with a Right-click - Open-Edit as root.
If any user wants to open spacefm as root, then they should set up their own default editor.

PersonalMenu is not empty. It had menu-manager in it.

Everything is working good so far . But. There is a But. I am only mentioning this because I expect threads from users with specs close to mine to mention their install has a bug in it.

I have some .mkv, .avi , and .mp4 movie files on file. It does not matter if I use
SMPlayer Youtube Browser, Mplayer, or Gnome Mplayer.

I open a video in any of those applications and my cpu runs high as can be. The top readouts I am going to show are with Browser closed. Just rox filer, terminal running top, and the mplayer playing star trek .mp4.

I am not sure if this is a vesa glitch. Or this computer is so old now. Videos choke the cpu since it
is a P3. Youtube in browser has always choked the cpu on this unit. But before. Like in AntiX 13.
CPU would hammer on at 75% instead of a 100%, and movies on file were watchable.

All other things like switching desktops, setting up personal menu, antixcc is OK.
I suffer no crashes. This glitch is a weird one. So far I am of a mind to blame the age of the
computer. But. I might swap out drives again and load something else on the other drive.
Just to check. Windows XP is not a option in this bikers shop.

Like I mentioned. I double, triple checked all video applications. My viewing smplayer is like
the video is on heroin. I expect some posts to sound like mine later on. On legacy gear like mine with
savage graphics? I never checked my Sis box since it was only a live pendrive run. It is a P4 IBM
Desktop also. So maybe the symptom won't surface on that IBM computer.

Edit: Just visual info to show what I mean.

Thanks truteyka! Good catch. It appears Debian has changed the default group for users and are now following what Gentoo did over a decade ago. I've fixed this in the live system so the group ownership should be consistent. It is possible we will also need to make a similar small change in the installer.
