I figured I'd install the systemd version. This is running gparted outside of the installer. I am trying to blow away my AntiX 11 Sid install on the

Code: Select all

$ inxi -M
Machine: System: GATEWAY product: W3507 v: 500
           Mobo: Intel model: D102GGC2 v: AAD70214-201
           Bios: Intel v: GC11020M.15A.2010.2006.0817.0956 date: 08/17/2006
I used Slitaz Mountbox in antixcc>drives to mount /data and /dev/sda1 so I could do some file transfers.
The gparted issue was discovered when I was going to do a visual check on how much drive space I had in /data
I guess I'll try dfh instead.

I figured I'd install the systemd version since systemd broke my SID version of AntiX 11. Kinda a revenge thingy with me.

A couple of quick points so far...I've only run live or live w/persistence so far with the 64bit systemD full vesion:

1. So what will be the preferred method of adding items to a startup menu? Editing / etc / desktop-defaults/startup? Will entries be added in control center for that?
Depends on what you would like to do... think of / etc/desktop-defaults/startup as a global xinitrc. Anything that you would like for all sessions to start place in there (Example: osmo). Anything window manager specific place in the window manager startup.(Example: lxpanel in fluxbox)
dolphin_oracle wrote: 2. Is it possible to incorporate adding of an existing .desktop file the"Personal" menu? The add menu item requires you to know a lot of things that a .desktop file already knows.
2. Add .desktop files under Tools doesn't do anything.
3. Add Desktop under"Desktop" sound like adding another window manager to the system, but is actually for adding .desktop entries to the menus. May I suggest this be shown as a menu entry under Personal and Applications at the top level rather than tools. Just a thought. In any case it needs renamed.
Yes can update the add-desktop/remove-desktop into one more proper app with an import option. Where in an existing .desktop would act more or less like a template and fill in all the options when selected.
Any suggestions for a name? add/remove items?
dolphin_oracle wrote: 4. While adding apps via. apt updates the menu, adding an app via gdebi failed to auto-update. I'm unsure why. Maybe a fluke, will retest. This was with google-chrome-stable. recordmydesktop added from apt auto-updated the menu just fine.
Not a fluke... apt-get has the ability to add a hook script into the apt sequence of events.
/ etc/apt/apt.conf.d/
where as far as I know dpkg does not have a hook system (other than modifying the deb). If you know of how to hook in the script from apt update to dpkg please let me know. __{{emoticon}}__

Will figure out a fix for the duplicate entries.

I have become very fond of the rolling list idea as is done @ mepis with mx... perhaps it is achievable here as well?
To start a concentrate of my findings with the contents of this thread and a few emails:

Code: Select all

Problem: Conky sometimes disappears when starting a session and / or rox pinboard produces an error
Solution: Adjust startup delay in / etc/desktop-session.conf to 2 or greater.

Problem: Installer copies files as *root* to user home resulting in the inability to run / save program settings (geany / gtk).
Solution: Move skel copy strings from installer to /usr/share/desktop-session/first-run-script

Problem: Desktop menu has only an entry for adding desktop files. There should be a remove desktop files option as well.
Solution: add remove desktop item to the desktop menu.

Problem: add desktop is maybe miss-named... open for suggestions to the name change
Solution: Change name... (add/remove items?)

Problem: Standard Items in Personal menu are not editable / do not follow user selected defaults.
Solution: edit / etc/xdg/menus/TCM-MENU.menu by commenting out / removing" <AppDir>/usr/share/desktop-defaults/defaults/</AppDir>"
              add"desktop-menu --menu-file='/ etc/xdg/menus/TCM-MENU.menu' --write-out --write-out-file='personal'" to /usr/share/desktop-session/first-run-script

Problem: Spacefm Automount (pmount) fails erroring that mtab/fstab contains entry already
Solution: unknown

Problem: / etc/default/grub set wrong. No quiet mode, not as nice of a theme as previous, etc... just needs refining being the first time with grub 2.
Solution: Set proper defaults and have someone make a nice theme like 4 MX... install grub-customizer to help?

Problem: Fluxbox menu -> desktop -> session settings global does not open root text editor with config.
Solution: Remove the () around (Global)

Problem: Keys files not coherent with the other window managers
Solution: Update Keys Files

Problem: Conky sits on top of other windows when restarting / starting
Solution: add " wmctrl -F -r"Conky ($HOST)" add,below" to conky section of desktop-session

Problem: Conky missing screen resolution
Solution: add ${color}${execi 100 xdpyinfo | sed -n -r"s/^\s*dimensions:.*\s([0-9]+x[0-9]+).*/\1/p"} to conky rcs'

Problem: Items from default desktop and personal menu are duplicated in the applications menu
Solution: add filters to xdg/menus/* or add Item to NoDisplay in the various .desktop files.

Problem: fluxbox menu has duplicated entries for updating the menu. One under update menus and the other under fluxbox settings.
Solution: remove the one from fluxbox settings.

Problem: set-screen-blank errors out first run due to lack of ~/.desktop-session/desktop-session.conf
Solution: Add ~/.desktop-session/desktop-session.conf to / etc/desktop-session/file_compare

Problem: With user protect enabled, nothing gets updated with the global counterparts when updated. Meanwhile when not protected everything is updated without knowledge.
Solution: Make intermediate option where nothing is updated and a prompt is presented as to what to update when there is an update available the user logs on.

Problem: Control-Center -> edit system moniter always opens the same conky file.
Solution: make control center read desktop session and open appropriate config ( a lib entry may be needed for desktop and control center to share )

Problem: Conky persist enabled check is too frequent
Solution: bump time value from 10 to 100

Problem: Conky root FS Used value @ 99% live
Solution: Unkown

Problem: Conky font difficult to read
Solution: Change font."xftfont DejaVu Sans:bold:size=9"

Problem: rox-fluxbox missing from alternative desktops menu
Solution: Unknown

Problem: Browser is closed when switching / reloading desktop session
Solution: Unknown

Problem: sbins not in system path for user... only root
Solution: add"PATH=$PATH:/sbin:/usr/sbin" to ~/.bashrc

Problem: Installer does not work with a gpt partitioned disk
Solution: refer to updated MX installer

Problem: Homepage differs between RD and RV versions
Solution: Unknown... ASSUME copy the config between versions

Problem: All packages in antix repo are listed twice
Solution: Comment out stable repo

Problem: RD not ejecting CD's on shutdown
Solution: Unknown

Problem: Control center lacking quick access to manipulate desktop-session settings (.conf / startup / file_compare / etc....)
Solution: add item to edit such configs in session section of control center

Problem: Add Desktop under tools no longer works...
Solution: change exec portion of menu to point to add-desktop or remove in favor of duplicate item in desktop submenu

Problem: unclear what add desktop does under the desktop sub menu
Solution: change name and update program.

Problem: Gdebi not auto updating menu as it directly utilizes dpkg not apt, therefor the apt hook does not come into play
Solution: Unknown

Problem: Menu lacking entry for synaptic
Solution: add / modify .desktop file for synaptic

Problem: Ceni will not work with wireless but wicd does
Solution: Unknown ASSUME that wicd is"taking over" in the RD version (/ var/run/wpa_supplicant existing and should be remove to run ceni)

Problem: Geany remembering the previously opened files as default
Solution: Set geany config to forget previous files on startup as default

Problem: Swap not automatically turning on in live USB
Solution: Unknown

Problem: inxi reporting false window manager identification (fluxbox ok)
Solution: Unknown

Problem: Persistance not asking to change passwords... normal?
Solution: Unknown

Problem: Personal menu does not truely accomodate for a manual configuration (similar to userprotect making all updates or no updates)
Solution: Update desktop-menu script

a point to add to the desktop identification. On further review, the false naming only occurs if you switch desktops from the alternative desktop menu. If you log into a given desktop, the identification is correct.

for the menu update operation for dpkg/gdebi, can you symlink"update-menus" to whatever updates the applications menu. we may have talked about this before and decided the method had its own issues. not super important in my mind, as most apps will be added by apt/synpatic.

liveUSB w/ persistance. persist-save runs twice at reboot. this jams up the shutdown procedure as there is a dialog waiting for an answer in X after antiX switches to console. I seem to recall BitJam fixing a similar bug in MX.

Hmm maybe inxi is confused by the switch and then defaults to blackbox....
Symlinking is in place for the menu update. Here is a follow through of the process.
1 menu is symlinked to global position in /usr/share/desktop-menu/.WM/menu-applications
2. apt-get is run
3 apt refers to / etc/apt/apt.conf.d/ for various scripts and runs 99-update-menus
4 99-update-menus refers to /usr/local/bin/desktop-menu-apt-update set
5. this records the modified times of /usr/share/applications
6 99-update-menus refers to /usr/local/bin/desktop-menu-apt-update check
7 this compares the modified time recorded and the current modified time of /usr/share/applications.
8 if different /usr/local/bin/desktop-menu-apt-update calls /usr/local/bin/desktop-menu to update the global menu. If the same quitely exits
9 if the global menus are updated it is automatically transferred to the user via the symlink

The key to make it work with dpkg / gdebi would be replace steps 3 with something like
3 dpkg refers to / etc/DPKGCONFIGDIR/ for various scripts and runs 99-update-menus

I am not sure how to do this without modifying the control file for every deb .... maybe an alias.... but then it would run for every package passed through apt-get. So apt-get -f install calibe icedove evince gimp openshot etc would make the menu update run 6 times for one apt-get.

2nd install try with RD i386 version. Gparted in installer would crash. Restart gparted and go to next function. Crash. Restart, go to next function.
I finally ended up with a /, /home, /data, and /swap partition. I picked preserve home. Installed grub to MBR.

Old hat stuff for me. Pulled out cd before shutdown and hard powered off (pressed power button)
No bootable drive on reboot. So 2nd install. I will pick ext4, do not preserve. LET IT format both / and /home to ext4.

Install grub to mbr. Hope she works this time.

No. Grub is still not installing to MBR. This is RD i386 testing. I am now booted into a Parted Magic cd and try and see what is what.

I noticed on the 2nd try of installer. I do not get the"grub installed OK" pop up. It goes straight to start up services.
I reboot. No boot device found.
OOps. Forgot to mention. Md5sum always done before burning cds.

Well... with the"D" Versions I have noted 2 things... and (boot) speed increase is not one of them.
1. Battery Life has extended to at least double the length of time under the same usage
2. Base ram usage with my configuration copied over is now 300MB + on cold boot from what used to be 89MB or so. Now it is 450MB+ with iceweasel where it used to be 120MB... Htop displays the same as conky, free +/- buffers/cache the same.... however htop will not show what is taking all the ram!!! It shows very similar amounts to my old install.

Any thoughts?

anti asked about persistence and remaster, then persistence again.

Well, it seems to work, at least on the systemD 64bit version

1. set up persistence. I've done this twice now, both with the remastercc utility and the auto-create from the boot menu.
2. installed google-chrome
3. made sure persistence file was saved (leading to the double launch of the persist-save script mentioned earlier. )
4. rebooted into static persistence.
5. ran the remaster routine.
6. rebooted without persistence, google-chrome present.
7. created new persistence files with the auto-create routines from the boot menu
8. installed gtk-recordmydesktop.
9. rebooted, making sure persistence file saved.
10. gtk-recordmydesktop still present.

so I guess it works. I did not try a second remaster.

Suprised me. I see grub2 in /boot/grub. I tried super grub disk 2 in Parted Magic. It booted my AntiX install OK. But it does not reinstall grub2 to mbr.
So I booted my live RV i386 and tried the Repair Grub assistent from Mepis inside of System>Configure

Of course you know what it tells me.

"This is a boot restoration utility. (Grub Legacy). Would you like to restore the bootloader?"

Meh. WTF. I will give it a try though I doubt grub legacy and grub2 mix sex together real well.
Testing? Testing? __{{emoticon}}__

I give up. Grub repair in antixcc gave me nada. Being stubborn, I tried my i386 RV cd and did another reinstall. Install grub to /dev/sda1 MBR. Yes dammit.
No confirmation with grub installed OK. Just straight to startup services. Finished. Reboot. No bootable media found.
Hit F10 and changed between hard drives back and forth just in case. No bootable media found. I give up tonight.
This is with the GUI installer in both i386 releases. Full isos.

Compiled and packaged the latest grub-customizer for 64 bit and added it to the repo.
Anyone running 64 bit version of the alpha should be able to
apt-get update && apt-get -f install grub-customizer

Sorry to the people with i386... it is coming very shortly

On my Acer Aspire ES1-511-C59V laptop, the Synaptics Touchpad is not recognized even though it works fine in MX-14.2. In MX-14.2 it depends on the psmouse module but even manually loading that module in antiX-14-a3-RD did nothing.

I also noticed that the output of lspci changed a lot.

I'll try the SysV version of antiX-14-a3 next.

I fink I found a bug in the (Core) cli-installer! SysVinit version core-libre 64 bit.

I couldn't install:

Code: Select all

cp: cannot copy a directory , |live/aufs/root/, into itself
File copy done
Copy done - lies!

Code: Select all

chroot: failed to get the attributes of |media/sda7, no such file or directory
Which was true.

No massive problem for testing, I simply created |media/sda7 by hand and mounted /dev/sda7 manualy.

I left the paths in for clarity I tested on my laptop too (WHICH IS NOW WORKING) and got the same result (with adb5 ;D ).

Core appears to work as anticipated, re: smxi and nvidia driver install. (However I did have issues with nvidia and the latest Liqourix kernel, but that's out of scope and one for another time).

Code: Select all
