Weighing in on the original question a bit late, but I have a pretty strong opinion, based on experience in this matter. I definitely keep multiple window managers, multiple desktop managers, multiple distro instances, and multiple computers available. Just their redundancy alone, not only gives me alternatives on each system, it also gives me implicit backup for many things. In this way, the only other thing I must back up is any sensitive, important, data that I cannot get from any other source. But I'm so well covered in everything else that I don't have to do much media to media backup; I do as much of it as possible over the network, minimizing my time and cost, yet also minimizing my exposure. Stuff I really don't want others seeing on the 'net are the only things I need local, offline backup for, and there isn't all that much of that kind of thing.

So having redundancy is a GOOD thing, unless you are at 90% or more disk capacity, and in that case, it may just be more expeditious to consider additional hardware.

By the way, it's not like I keep all that much on local systems either. I have two laptops, each with 160 GB hard drives. I am able to keep at least six distros, often eight or nine, on each, and yet have plenty of space left over on each. I have an external USB drive with 500 GB of backup capacity; it has PLENTY of reserve space. Because of my strategy, I only occasionally have to back up my systems; there isn't that much to lose because I have lots of redundancy in the manner in which I store information.

Well, I guess I have to agree... And I also seem to like trying the different ones...
And it is not really that I have to save space, after all I have a 16 gig hard drive.
I don't think I have had more than 5-6g of stuff on it yet, except when having more than one OS on it.

All my"daily-use-stuff" goes on sd cards, which I pop out when I change things, and I like to believe it makes my stuff"safe"
Movies and crap goes wherever, or on the wifes external hd.

After trying antix for a little while, I can't decide if I like fluxbox, or icewm best, and I found fvvm-crystal pretty neat!

So, has anyone used Stow package management?

Now, something a bit different...

I am going to add a couple usb ports to my little netbook.
I have an old-ish samsung dvd burner, which use a Y wire, so thet uses 2 usb's, so that is that side of the machine...
The other side has 1 usb connector, which is usually used for my wireless mouse.

My idea is to move the mouse reciever, and maybe mount a stick, or if I can find a very small card reader inside, to some unused usb's on the pcb.

My understanding is that the mouse uses a rf signal?, which I think should work ok inside the machine?

And all this, just to have 3 usb ports"outside" __{{emoticon}}__
Oh, and a bit more space to store crap on.
OR should I wire in a bluetooth reciever in stead of the extra stick, maybe?
Can I turn on/off an usb with some setting, or do I have to wire in a switch?

I think there was someone on here that wanted to see pics of this(Dave??? __{{emoticon}}__ ), so let me know if anyone wants pics, and I will get some...when I get something done...

Goyathlay, I hope my retarded posts lets you avoid some of my screwups! have fun!

Ok, I will get some pics when I get going.
Have you had one of these apart before?
And all you really want is a new disc, kinda?
I test fitted a big lumpy kingston 8g stick under the lid on the bottom, and it will not fit, with all the covers on.
If I took all the covers off, I could fit 2 in there, without cutting any plastic.
I believe you could fit one of the micro-sized ones (the ones who look like mouse recievers) without any issues, and no cutting?
What have you got/want?

I can adjust my pics and things a bit, if it helps...

1. Yes I had one apart to change the ssd, then I found out it is a irregular type of drive (for here). So that one is sitting with no drive.
2. Yes as I still cannot buy a new irregular type ssd.
3. What I have is a mug of various thumb drives and 2 (considered dead) aspire ones. Simply trying to get them to work without paying close to the cost of a new one ($175 CAD). If it will cost me $xx.xx to buy"special" thumb drives with a good amount of storage that would be fine to me.

well, there is this option:

That is the disk I have, btw... But I guess low buck is better for some things.

But then I will assume you remember how to get it apart, and concentrate on the stuff inside.

sooo... I was looking at memory and cpu use today...
Is there any reason why transmission, cups, and bluetooth should use anything at all, when I don't use them?
I am sure there are other things too, but they are just wierd names, and I have no idea what they do. __{{emoticon}}__

My machine don't even have bluetooth, unless I dig it out of my drawer full of stuff I never use.
I print stuff every 2 years...and use deluge for... stuff __{{emoticon}}__

Btw, I also noticed that wicd-gtk (I believe... the icon on the toolbar) and the mixer icon add 5-7-ish mb, and I don't really need them, most of the time.

otoh, I have no idea why I bother, as I am at 5% memory use at idle, and maybe 12-15 while browsing the internet.

OH! and Dave! I have not forgot... I am just looking for usb connectors I like, and I am also on vacation=slow mode __{{emoticon}}__

just friggin died today. Making clicking noises ever since I got it back from my wife and when I first got it back (I can't swaer to it but I wonder if her or her girlfriend dropped it while they had it). I had to re-seat it because Bios would not even see it. Well, It gave up the ghost today. So I am running my 16 gig SD Flash card AntiX 12 on it for right now. I found this and ordered it just now.

The 30 gig Samsung HD had Windows XP on it (probably what trashed it). It got so bad I was doing a chkdisk almost every boot to get to a screen and slowed down down down as it ran.
After yanking it out. I reset bios to defaults. Edited boot order for sd card and usb first. Killed network boot option for now. It is running good now on flash card. I am listening to Danko Jones in xmms as I type this. I will be putting AntiX 12 final on that 20 gig HD when it arrives. I will write a how to also on the forum with screen shots also when I do this. Friggin Windows bites me in the ass again. Arrrrrrrrgh! __{{emoticon}}__

You know... I am 83% sure that the first link you had to the smasung ipod drive would fit in an aspire one, AND work...

But to return to the original topic for a bit... yes, it is good to have a backup for everything... __{{emoticon}}__
Yep, I messed it up again, kinda... but I might fix it this time, it is just a day or two since I did a fresh install __{{emoticon}}__

After digging around... I found this stuff to get xmms into conky (which I have been messing with today)

Code: Select all

${color #ffccaa}Xmms: ${color #888888}${execi 25 cat /tmp/xmms-info | grep Status: | cut -d":" -f2}
${color #888888}Artista: ${color #cccccc}${execi 25 xmmsctrl title | cut -d"-" -f1}
${color #888888}Titulo :${color #cccccc}${execi 25 xmmsctrl title | cut -d"-" -f2}
${color #888888}Tiempo : ${color #cccccc}${execi 25 xmmsctrl print %m%n} ${color #888888}( ${color #cccccc}${execi 25 xmmsctrl print %M%n} ${color #888888})
${color #888888}Lista  : ${color #cccccc}${execi 25 xmmsctrl getpos} ${color #888888}/${color #CCCCCC}${execi 25 cat /tmp/xmms-info | grep Tunes | cut -d":" -f2}

  ${color #ddaa00}${execi 8 xmmsbar}
And also this file: called xmms.sh

Code: Select all

#!/bin/bash

#This script is free to modify and distribute.
#Use at your own risk.

#Requirement: xmms-infopipe

#User Settings here
maxcol=35
file=/tmp/xmms-info

#Grab needed information
pos=`cat $file | grep uSecPosition: | cut -d : -f2`
len=`cat $file | grep uSecTime: | cut -d : -f2`

#Count the length in characters of the title
size=`echo $title | wc -c`
#Calculate current position within that length
poscol=$(echo"$pos*$maxcol/$len" | bc)

#Printing
for (( i=0; i<$maxcol; i++ ))
do
  if [ $i -eq $poscol ]; then
    echo -n 'O'
  else
    echo -n '='
  fi
done
I noticed it also neded the xmms-infopipe
Someone has to have this set up???

edit!I did find a xmms-infopipe.deb
I just hope it still works!
Now...Where would I put that xmms.sh file, and would that work on antix?

I've gooten into the habit of putting script text files in /home/username/scripts/xmms.sh or whatever other scripts I may run to find easier later.
