I've been fooling around with antiX-base M12.0 Pre Final whenever I get a chance, and I've had it going for the past day or so. About a day ago, I was messing with SimplyMEPIS 11.0 and I installed fvwm-crystal and Midori on it, just to play around a bit. MEPIS was using something like 82 MB for fvwm-crystal and only 222 MB, or something like that, with a browser running too. I figured,"Hey, in the past, I've seen as little as 57 MB when I'm using just IceWM on a freshly booted system, so I decided to see how well I could do with this year's base, which has really been very good!

Here are the results:

Code: Select all

48.2 MB in use right after boot! That's a new low record, since I have been keeping track of such things. Sure, WAY back in 1995 when I was running a 100 MHz system with only XX MB of total MEMORY - probably 32 MB, I was probably using 5 MB from the kernel, but the Linux kernel has grown. But this is about 9 MB less than any other system I've used in the past 3-4 years, including previous versions of antiX, so I don't know where I squeezed it out; probably just using fewer startup components. In any case, this speaks VERY WELL for a base antiX system, and when you add to this the facts that it has worked virtually flawlessly for me, and that I've also installed it on old Dell Dimension 3000 desktop hardware (circa 2004) that has been working great for my Mom, this REALLY speaks well for antiX-base!

Here's what I use when I add in two Iceweasel browser tabs into the equation:

Code: Select all

inxi -F

Still pretty impressive, wouldn't you say?

My latest antiX-base M12.0 reboot (perhaps before everything was running 100%, because this is really incredible), used only these resources:

Brian - Could you try installing the latest 3.4.4 antiX kernel to see if all is ol?

It should be in the repo (if not, it is at mepisimo)

I do have it on both of my core instances, anti, and it is superb! Just haven't installed it here yet; that is on my"TO DO" list! __{{emoticon}}__

UPDATE: I snagged the latest kernel for base, so next time I reboot, I'll be using it!

The latest kernel, tested as promised, and as also promised, all is well, since I have verified this kernel in other images. But this is the base that I've been working with during the testing cycle, and I now have all of the current software, tools, and kernel completely up to date. Still working perfectly well for me, humming under 300 MB of memory used when I run a desktop and a browser, and in the forties when just a light window manager is used and stats are gathered IMMEDIATELY after startup. I suspect that's because some stuff is still loading in the background, but whatever, that is incredibly impressive, considering all that this system DOES!

Downloaded & tried AntiX-12-base-rc2 - impressive.

Running live from a pendrive, everything went well until using xmms, couldn't drop down the playlist window using the pl button (right bottom).
[Constant attempting (about 10 quick hits in a row) froze the machine.]

I liked what I saw, & will run it again shortly, on my other machines & see if I find anything else.
(Just enough programs to make it immediately useful; just like my netbook install.)

I use Debian as my main distro, so am always interested to see lightweight derivatives, especially live pendrive distros.
Now that you are moving away from Mepis specifics, I am more interested in your distro.

As this is a 486 version, I presume there will be other releases for later processors (686) as well?

Thanks to all concerned in making this distro available.

Edit: Even more impressed to discover mplayer is on the 'base' version. __{{emoticon}}__
