Hello everyone,

I'm currently Multi-Booting antiX with other 6 Linux Distributions on my Test PC.
I'm very much interested in antiX and I'd like to learn more about it.

I decided not to start a new thread and start reading here:
========= SCRAPER REMOVED AN EMBEDDED LINK HERE ===========
url was:"http://antix.mepis.org/index.php?title=Howto_articles"
linktext was:"http://antix.mepis.org/index.php?title=Howto_articles"
====================================

However, I'm not sure whether it's the right place to start from or not?

I'm a bit confused. It says Fluxbox is the default Window Manager for antiX while Icewm is the default one after installation. I was trying to follow the steps in this guide:
========= SCRAPER REMOVED AN EMBEDDED LINK HERE ===========
url was:"http://antix.mepis.org/index.php?title=Fluxbox_Tips_and_Tricks_First_Time_User"
linktext was:"http://antix.mepis.org/index.php?title= ... _Time_User"
====================================
but then I came to know I'm on the wrong Window Manager.

I have lots of questions but before I start, my first question would be:

What's my first step? from where shall I start reading?

Thank you!

Best place to start is the antiX FAQ online here:

Hi again,

I'm still playing with Linux Distributions and still testing, etc.
Currently, I'm trying to Dual-Boot antiX with SliTaz. I unplugged my Master HDD (it has other OS's installed) and I'm using my Slave 20GB IDE HDD which has antiX 8.5 and SliTaz 3.0.

Now, I have two questions:

Question1:
How do I Dual-Boot SliTaz and antiX?
I tried to search the forum and the online documentations but couldn't find useful info.

I tried:

Code: Select all

update-grub
but it did not find SliTaz

Tried to add"chainloader" in menu.lst but it did not let me to save the file.

I installed SliTaz after I installed antiX

Code: Select all

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sda1 1 392 3148708+ 83 Linux
/dev/sda2 393 653 2096482+ 83 Linux
/dev/sda3 654 2438 14338012+ 5 Extended
/dev/sda5 654 784 1052226 82 Linux swap / Solaris
/dev/sda6 785 1176 3148708+ 83 Linux
/dev/sda6 has SliTaz.

Question2:

I'm trying to update the packages but I always get this:

Code: Select all

W: GPG error: http://apt.progchild.de stable Release: The following signatures were invalid: KEYEXPIRED 1284453048 KEYEXPIRED 1284453048 KEYEXPIRED 1284453048
W: Failed to fetch http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/dists/testing/main/binary-i386/Packages.bz2 Hash Sum mismatch

E: Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead.
I tried to fix it but Synaptic in antiX is different than Synaptic in Ubuntu.
Not sure what shall I do?

The progchild is goggles music manager. You will need to comment out goggles music manager in /etc/apt/sources.list to get rid of error. Debian repo is not keeping goggles music manager.

Just to show you. This is my /etc/apt/sources.list in AntiX 11 part 2 testing and goggles music manager repo is not included anymore.

"Can't open file to write"

I got this error message whenever I try to Edit and then Save sources.list.

Thanks a lot __{{emoticon}}__

I removed the other package but this time, I got another error:

Code: Select all

W: GPG error: http://www.debian-multimedia.org testing Release: The following signatures were invalid: BADSIG 07DC563D1F41B907 Christian Marillat <marillat@debian.org>
W: Failed to fetch http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/dists/testing/Release.gpg Temporary failure resolving 'ftp.us.debian.org'

W: Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead.
I tried to search for that package (Christian Marillat) but couldn't find it.

I searched using :
========= SCRAPER REMOVED AN EMBEDDED LINK HERE ===========
url was:"http://www.debian-multimedia.org"
linktext was:"http://www.debian-multimedia.org"
====================================
and got:

Code: Select all

# Multimedia Stable and Testing
#deb http://www.debian-multimedia.org stable main non-free
deb http://www.debian-multimedia.org testing main non-free
and

Code: Select all

###### Debian Unstable/Sid##########
###### Use at your own risk! ########
#deb http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ unstable main contrib non-free
#deb http://www.debian-multimedia.org unstable main non-free
So, what shall I do?

When I installed SliTaz after antiX, I did not install GRUB at all. As you may know, SliTaz gives you two options: either to install its bootloader (grub) to the MBR or not to install it at all.

As you may know,
Nope. I did not know that those are the only options in Slitaz. Since grub was not installed. There isd no way to boot Slitaz since it has no /boot/grub/menu.lst. Which is why upgrade-grub command can't find Slitaz. I was going to suggest if you had grub for slitaz installed to root to open /boot/grub/menu.lst with a text editor and copy and pasted slitaz entry into AntiX /boot/grub/menu.lst.

Actually there is /boot/grub/menu.lst and I found this:

Code: Select all

title SliTaz (Kernel vmlinuz-2.6.30.6-slitaz)
root (hd1,5)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.30.6-slitaz root=/dev/hdb6
Problem is: SliTaz using"/dev/hdX" instead of"/dev/sdX" and of course GRUB Legacy.

I have no idea why they still use these out-dated systems but ... oh well, when I was trying to post on their forum and ask them how to fix this and that and why not this and that they thought I'm rude/aggressive and I'm outsider, etc. I have no idea why people defend their favorite OS like they have spent their entire life building it? anyway, that's off-topic.

Now, I tried to add the above code but of course it will never work.
I tried to modify it to:

Code: Select all

title SliTaz (Kernel vmlinuz-2.6.30.6-slitaz)
root (hd0,5)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.30.6-slitaz root=/dev/sda6
SliTaz was Panic and did not work. Of course because SliTaz is using"/dev/hdX" not"/dev/sdX" like antiX.

So, is there anyway I could Dual-Boot SliTaz with antiX???

Try finding uuid I guess. And use uuid in root line instead of (hd) whatever. Worth a shot. It is how you learn. At least for me.

Code: Select all

ls -l /dev/disk/by-uuid/

Sure, learning is what I love and do daily.

Does GRUB Legacy support uuid?? shall I just replace"(hd1,5) with the uuid and that's all?

Grub Legacy is in AntiX and yes it supports uuid. Just rename menu.lst as menu.lstbk. Make a new blank menu.lst

Put any entry you want in it. Then copy your lines into antiX /boot/grub/menu.lst. For me to show you my grub4dos /boot/grub/menu.lst. I would have to boot into Puppy and repost here later. I am playing with skins in qmmp media player so give me a few and I will post back withy a menu.lst that will blow your mind.
