Greetings All,

It's a pleasure for me to join this forum and to learn Linux ....

I've an old machine and am trying to get antiX to work on it fully.
The pc has 128mb RAM, 4GB HD, AT Keyboard, HP PS/2 wheeled optical mouse.

I was able to install antiX successfully, and struggled with getting the mouse
to work. I removed it and installed DSL and the mouse worked fine.

HOWEVER, my preference is to get antiX to work.
I've formatted the drive with Gparted:
3.49GB - EXT3
300mb - SWAP
The install keeps hanging when it tries to format sda1 in step 3 of the
antiX installment wizard.

My objective is to:
- get HP PS/2 mouse to work

====================================

- Also to get antiX installed.

BTW: I love antiX ... I find it truly brings older systems back to life.

Final REQUEST: Is it possible to run antiX without the GUI?

NOW please help me...

This is the first time I have ever heard of a older mouse not working.

My wireless usb mouse works just fine in AntiX 11.

If wanting to run without a gui. Pick init 3 boot from menu list in grub screen on boot.

Edit: I use 700MB /swap on my 512MB ram IBM a22M Laptop. The core iso also does not use a gui to install AntiX either if that is what you mean by not wanting a gui.

Thanks for the reply rokytnji

This system doesn't work at all with this mouse
and I experience the same with Puppy Linux.
When I installed DSL 4410 it recognized the
HP PS/2 mouse immediately.

My request was indeed to know if I could use
a full install of antiX without the utiliszation of the mouse.

Right now when I try to install antiX on this system
the Caps Lock and Scroll Lock lights light up and the
system seems to hang at the same place (step 3)
attempting to format the root with EXT3.

I would really now like to:
- Have antiX reInstalled onto this system
- Get the mouse to work.

The Boot option used is"xres=800x600" because when
I used the first option on liveCD my resolution is
400x300.

Sounds to me the cli installer choice in the full iso grub screen may be what you are looking to do.

Be patient a bit and wait for Anti to reply to this thread. The mouse issue has me in a wonderment. DSL runs a 2.4 kernel. We are at the 3.0 kernel stage here so I don't know how you can't get a PS2 mouse recognised. Did you do a md5sum of the download before you burned the CD also?

You can use the cli-installer. (you are using antiX-M11 right?)

Running live, choose cli-installer option (basically it puts you in init3), login as root, password root, type cli-installer and follow the instructions.

rokytnji,
Thanks for the MD5 suggestion.
I'll get this done on one of the antiX installs.

This is an amazement to me as well.
I've been able to configure Xorg.conf on other
devices. Believe you me, I've tried everything.
At first I thought it was a problem with the hardware,
until DSL 4410 used the mouse with no problems
at all. And yes I confirmed the kernel with a uname.

Now, this same system seems to refuse the antiX
install. I'm going to try and install it again.
My usual path is to use Gparted to format sda1 to
EXT3 and then run the antiX installer.

NOTE: I've tried"pci=irqmask=0x0e98" and also
pci=force in the boot option with add cheats.

NOTE2: I've tried to run the cli-installer, it returns errors.
HOWEVER... this was when I was trying to reinstall
from the DSL 4410 install.

OK .. I'm going to do the Gparted and then antiX installer thing.

I can't wait until we get this fixed because I've another system
that I'd like to use the mouse on, when I install antiX on.

Again: AT Keyboard and PS/2 mouse (HP)

I thank you again for your attention...

Anticapitalista, it's an honor to recieve a post reply from you.
Please read my reply to rokytnji. It would seem as I was
replying you were too.
Here's my intentions.
Run Gparted ... format sda1 (3.49GB)
Restart Live CD
Then select cliinstall option.
then run cli-installer again.

I thank you.

I've been able to attempt the cli-installer, I get:
ata1.00 reported invalid CHS sector 0
with more text above.

I'm on a windows box and I was able to download MD5Summer v1.20.11
at:
========= SCRAPER REMOVED AN EMBEDDED LINK HERE ===========
url was:"http://www.md5summer.org/"
linktext was:"http://www.md5summer.org/"
====================================

Normally I use md5sum -c *.md5* file
to checksum in linux.

I was able to reinstall DSL 4410 and no errors reported.
I don't want DSL 4410, from my observance those
app renditions are OLD ...
Prime Example: try to apt-get install samba

So my 2 objective remains:
1. Install antiX M11 486
2. Get an"HP PS/2 wheeled optical" mouse to work in antiX M11

Please help ... I will do the leg work.
I'm truly looking to get out of the Windows box.
I really like Linux, really ... so help me ...

Greetings All,

I've been busy ... REALLY BUSY.
I wanted to make sure that nothing was wrong with the HD,
due to the error encountered: ata1.00: device reported invalid CHS sector 0

I installed DSL 4410 with no problem.
I removed the Linux boot partition (via fdisk (DOS version))
I created a DOS primary partition.
I turned off the system and brought it back up,
booting to floopy.
I formatted and systemized the newly created DOS partition.
I then installed MS Windows 98 SE.

I was able to surf the web, create and delete files in MS Windows 98.
I was able to do the same thing in DSL 4410.

I do pray that my efforts prove that nothing is wrong with the HD.

Please understand ... I truly would prefer to have antiX M11 on this system,
definitely not MS Windows 98.

To conclude, my objective is to:
- install sucessfully antiX M11
- be able to use an HP PS/2 Optical mouse, once antiX is installed.

If there's anything else that I could do to aid in the efforts,
please let me know.

I'm wondering if your box suffers from what my emachine desktop I got from a dumpster. It won't accept the new Antix 3.0 kernel or the liqourix 3.0 kernel or the Debian Sid 3.0 kernel if I install them after my initial install of Antix 11

Code: Select all

via smxi but anything above that kernel would fail for me booting. There are posts by me on that issue in another thread in the forum. Sounds like a hardware incompatibility maybe to me with your box and newer kernels like I experience with this Motorcycle Shop Desktop. Hard to tell though with me over here and you over there though. __{{emoticon}}__

Edit: maybe Anti can take pity on you and upload or point you to a AntiX 8.5 iso with the older kernel to see.

You can upgrade via dist-upgrade after install. First thing after a Install like I am suggesting is a

Code: Select all

apt-get update
to bring everything in packages up to date. I run AntiX 8.5 still on my Amrel RT 786EX Laptop (core install with LXDE Desktop) and have upgraded everything so it stays current with what is in Debian. HTH. __{{emoticon}}__

Greetings All,

I've the solution to my ata1.00: device reported invalid CHS sector 0 problem.

I used a boot floppy having fdisk (DOS version) and removed all of the partitions.
I then configured the BIOS to boot to CDrom ... ensuring that the antiX M11 486 is in the drive.
NOTE: I had to use the add cheat option, because this system boots icewm to a max resolution of 400x300.
(I used xres=800x600)
I ran the antix installer from within icewm, and followed the instructions (installed to entire harddrive).

Once the system was rebooted ... I ran an apt-get update (as an administrator) in the terminal.
I also successfully ran apt-get install samba now samba v3.6.3 is running.
The system is running with a successful antix M11 486 install.

To conclude and offer a final summary:
Basically I removed all of the partitions on the hard drive and then allowed the antiX M11 486 to install.
The current Kernel is Linux 2.36.1-mepis.
The HD was partitioned as follows: 3.49GB EXT3 boot partition, and 541.25mb SWAP partition.

This is an awesome solution for me, however this would yield total data loss to those that encouter the
ata1.00: device reported invalid CHS sector 0 problem with data already on the hard drive.
This solution is great for an intial installation, please, please look to alternatives if data is alreay on the hard drive.

Solution rendered by: DuvivierH __{{emoticon}}__ )
---

ERROR Encountered:
The only error that I encoutered during the installation was a problem to create the swap partition.
The antix installer returned me to step 1 ... I pressed enter and all went well.
---

NOW the initial problem remains:
- be able to use an HP PS/2 Optical mouse, once antiX is installed.

Greetings rokytnji,
Thanks for the post on the emachine post.
This box almost ended up in the same dumpster as your emachine.

HOWEVER, I'm happy that I was able to get antiX M11 with 2.6.36-1-mepis.
Also thanks for the inxi command, it will come in handy for me in the
future.

If you could tell me how to upgrade the kernel that would be
beneficial ... Also any tips you can through my way on Linux.

Now the thing with the mouse is a truly what I'm after now,
because I really want to complete this install.

Also if, as you said: Anti wants to give me a modified kernel to try
I'll do so with no problem.

I'm downloading the antix-M8.5-686.iso as I type.
Since the hash of the MD5sum is external ... do I just save it in
a text file? or pass it to md5sum on the command line where
iso file is?

rokytnji, thanks a bunch ... and ... I look forward to a solution to
the HP PS/2 wheeled mouse problem.

Greetings anticapitalista,

Thanks for the init3 advice.
At first I thought I'd have to pass init 3 at the command line.

HOWEVER ...

In my GRUB menu there's already an init 3 option, and it's great.

NOW please give the assist with the HP PS/2 Optical Mouse problem,
it just doesn't work ... I'm sure it something in xorg.conf

I have noticed many Apple touch pad entries ...
This is a desktop not a laptop ... maybe this was done by default.
Also is the fact that the keyboard is AT could that be a factor?

Again thank you and to rokytnji as well.

Do a cat on the device say /dev/psaux or /dev/mouse or /dev/input/mice and then move your mouse. If you see bizarre looking characters on the screen, you got the right device.

You can also as root in terminal do a

Code: Select all

apt-get update
then when done

Code: Select all

apt-cache policy hwinfo
if not installed

Code: Select all

 apt-get install hwinfo
to give us more info on the mouse do

Code: Select all

hwinfo
it should show info on your mouse. post the relevant info also so Anti can look at it. I just got back from spending my hard earned money for this week and am bleary eyed a bit after the bars closed. HTH.
