Greetings rokytnji,

I've followed your advice and looked at your links.
I don't have a run directory in my /.

I did include this section in the xorg.conf file:

Section"ServerFlags"
Option"AutoAddDevices""false"
EndSection

from following your links which lead me to:

========= SCRAPER REMOVED AN EMBEDDED LINK HERE ===========
url was:"http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=64927&p=376136#p376136"

The result of this inclusion was as follows:
I rebooted the system (init 6)
No Errors posted during boot.
The login screen appeared no problem.
I logged in ... all resolutions were fine.
The HP PS/2 Optical mouse did not work and the optical light is always on.

From what I gather your provided links:

Seem to be the same they both contain the jlinkels » 2011-06-23 13:21 post.

As always I thank you for your suggestions and help.

I am not exactly sure were your problem is, but I think it is with the mouse mapping in xorg.conf, these links will help.

the optical light is always on.
That is just showing that power is coming to the mouse. Has nothing to do I think with input and output signals. Borrowing that from my electrician background when I was a crew chief on Helicopters in USMC.
I am out of ideas myself. Other than trying/borrowing another mouse and keyboard.

Thanks for the two links.
Once I get to the box I will do the following...

========= SCRAPER REMOVED AN EMBEDDED LINK HERE ===========
url was:"http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions"
linktext was:"http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions"
====================================
... 86-309114/

I will try to see if I could modify the symbolic links associated with the mouse.
I'll have to man ln to get a better understanding.

... tions.html

This link was full of possibilities.
I especially liked (by user arch):
My USB mouse quit working after kernel 2.6.20 also. It turned out that my mouse had moved from /dev/input/mouse2 to /dev/input/mouse3.

This is pathetic but here's how I figured it out:

I logged in as root and tried

cat /dev/input/mouse0
cat /dev/input/mouse1
cat /dev/input/mouse2
cat /dev/input/mouse3

I wiggled the mouse each time to see which one spat out data to identify which device file was tied to my mouse.

I then edited my xorg.conf file and in the InputDevice section I changed
Option"Device""/dev/input/mouse2"
to
Option"Device""/dev/input/mouse3"

The next time I started X, it was all better.
However the mouse is a PS/2, yet I still find this to be a do-able problem solving technique.

You're right, this does seem to be pointing to entering correct entries in the xorg.conf file.

Also note ... these possible solutions date back to 2005 ...

Thanks Dave, once I get back to the system I will try these out from the links and render the results.

Greetings rokytnji,

Pretty impressive USMC -- Hoya !!!
Dude ... helicopters are cool ... NOW you're into bikes.

Cool ... personally I've always been interested in those forms of
mechanics ... I've just not been given the direction ... Maybe you'll
pass some knowledge my way.

OK ... I still would like to see the HP PS/2 optical mouse to work
in antiX M11 486

Greetings Dave,

Worked with your links from your post on Sun Apr 08, 2012 5:55 pm

The solution from your link:
========= SCRAPER REMOVED AN EMBEDDED LINK HERE ===========
url was:"http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions"
linktext was:"http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions"
====================================
... 86-309114/
seemed to be
a winner ... I modified my xorg.conf file to have the following for InputDevice section:

Code: Select all

Section"InputDevice"
Identifier"Mouse0"
Driver"mouse"
Option"CorePointer"
Option"Protocol""IMPS/2"
#Option"Device""/dev/input/mice"
Option"Device""/dev/psaux"
Option"ChordMiddle"
Option"Buttons""5"
Option"ZAxisMapping""4 5"
EndSection
The outcome is that the HP PS/2 Optical Mouse still doesn't work.

I will look into your second link.

Thanks Dave

Greetings All,

I don't know if this helps:
I did an ls /dev and didn't see any mouse.

I post this because in one of the posts links by Dave for the solution for Richikiki at

========= SCRAPER REMOVED AN EMBEDDED LINK HERE ===========
url was:"http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/slackware-14/logitech-usb-ps2-mouse-config-for-xfree86-309114/"

on post 04-03-2005, 10:46 AM by chbin ... chbin gives instructions to do

Code: Select all

...
$ rm /dev/mouse

and then relink it to psaux because it's a ps/2 mouse.

$ ln -s /dev/mouse /dev/psaux
I figured in order to successfully rm /dev/mouse
mouse should exist in /dev

In my case mouse was never created in /dev

I don't know if this would help in the effort to get the HP PS/2 Optical mouse to work in antiX M11 486

Greegings Dave,

I've tried your second link:

url was:"http://www.linuxforums.org/forum/debian-linux/39423-ubuntu-5-04-2-6-20-kernel-ps-2-mouse-not-working-already-did-basic-configurations.html"

from your post on Sun Apr 08, 2012 5:55 pm

I tried to login as root in the Windows manager login screen nothing happened.
So, I logged in as a normal user and then accessed the terminal.

I opened up a terminal ... logged in as su ... then I entered cat /dev/input/mouse[0-3]
I wiggled the mouse and ran all four of the cat's for the mice
None of the ...mouse[0-30] were found.

These tests are from the post on 03-17-2007 by arch at:

Dave, could this be only applicable to a USB mouse?

I really thought this would have gotten the HP PS/2 Optical mouse to work in antiX M11 486, but it didn't.

Thanks Dave.

Greetings Dave,

Again from your second link:
========= SCRAPER REMOVED AN EMBEDDED LINK HERE ===========

from your post on Sun Apr 08, 2012 5:55 pm ... I followed the instructions of Vergil83 posting on 07-27-2005

I did the

Code: Select all

apt-get install mdetect
then ran it with

Code: Select all

mdetect
When I first ran it nothing was posted in the terminal.

I did a man mdetect and then used mdetect -v

upon scrolling up I saw someting relating to the /dev/psaux:

Code: Select all

Opening device psaux...
/dev/psaux says it's a intellimouse mouse
From what I conclude, mdetect states that antiX M11 486 sees the HP PS/2 Optical mouse
as an intellimouse.
If I'm not mistaken wouldn't this be a microsoft mouse?

Thanks for this link and the mdetect utilitiy.

Greetings Dave,

A third look into your second link:
========= SCRAPER REMOVED AN EMBEDDED LINK HERE ===========
url was:"http://www.linuxforums.org/forum/debian-linux/39423-ubuntu-5-04-2-6-20-kernel-ps-2-mouse-not-working-already-did-basic-configurations.html"

====================================
from your post on Sun Apr 08, 2012 5:55 pm ... I followed the instructions of Vergil83 posting on 07-29-2005 to modify
xorg.conf to get the intellimouse founded by mdetect.

I modified the InputDevice section to be (while I was in init 3):

Code: Select all

Section"InputDevice"
        Identifier "Mouse0"
        Driver "mouse"
        Option "CorePointer"
        Option "Protocol""PS/2"
        Option "Emulate3Buttons""true"
        #Option "Device""/dev/input/mice"
        Option "Device""/dev/psaux"
        Option "ZAxisMapping""4 5"
EndSection
I rebooted and logged into X.
I logged in succesfully.
The HP PS/2 Optical mouse did not work.

I then changed xorg.conf to be (make note to"ZAxisMapping")

Code: Select all

Section"InputDevice"
        Identifier "Mouse0"
        Driver "mouse"
        Option "CorePointer"
        Option "Protocol""PS/2"
        Option "Emulate3Buttons""true"
        #Option "Device""/dev/input/mice"
        Option "Device""/dev/psaux"
        Option "ZAxisMapping""6 7"
EndSection
I rebooted ... logged in again, successfully and the HP PS/2 optical mouse still doesn't work in antiX M11 486

Greetings All,

i've been looking into this and I found a posting at:

David states:
Well, I've got it working OK on my system, so...

I don't know about the mouseconfig program, but I do know it is
supported.

Within X, you want to use"IMPS/2" as the device type. PS/2 should also
work, but you won't be able to use the wheel as the third mouse button.
IntelliMouse is inly for serial devices.

Note that the xf86config program does not list IMPS/2 as one of the
known device types! You'll have to edit /etc/X11/XF86Config to set
this.

I've found that the culprit in this kind of problem (which I've also
encountered) is the gpm daemon - the one that provides text-mode mouse
support. It fails to reset the IntelliMouse properly when disengaging
from the hardware (when X starts).

Disable the gpm daemon (linuxconf is the easiest way to do this) and you
should be OK. If not immediately, then after a reboot.

The downside is that you won't have mouse control in text mode. (Not a
concern of mine, but you may want to use it.)

The only other alternative is to configure gpm, X, and other
mouse-related parts of the system for a generic PS/2 mouse. That should
work - I think IntelliMice work in a generic PS/2 mode if their special
features are never initialized.

-- David
Please let me know if what was said over a decade ago is still an applicable solution.

I thank you all for your assistance and look forward in getting this HP PS/2 to work in antiX M11 486, that doesn't work currently.

Greetings All,
I pray that you're not all in fear of Friday the 13th __{{emoticon}}__
Really, I'd love to see this box work with antiX M11 486
However, the HP PS/2 Optical mouse doesn't work at all.

I've been told it's the kernel version ... and that a small
modification to it will make it work.

I thank you all, immensely for your past assitance and look
forward to a fix soon. In the process of this flaw, I've been
learning a lot and have a great respect for Linux, especially
antiX M11 486 for older pc and current ones.
