What is the small modification to the kernel that will make it work?

Greetings anticapitalista,
I will look for the information and post them for you immediately.
I know in your hands you will make an assessment and let me
know if they're valid.
Hopefully soon I can get the HP PS/2 Optical mouse to work in antiX M11 486

HOWEVER, I think the specific location of reference in the link is:
...
■Option: HP_SDC
■Kernel Versions: 2.6.15.6 ...
■(on/off/module) HP System Device Controller i8042 Support
■depends on GSC && SERIO
■default y
This option enables supports for the the"System Device Controller", an i8042 carrying microcode to manage a few miscellanous devices on some Hewlett Packard systems. The SDC itself contains a 10ms resolution timer/clock capable of delivering interrupts on a periodic and one-shot basis. The SDC may also be connected to a battery-backed real-time clock, a basic audio waveform generator, and an HP-HIL Master Link Controller serving up to seven input devices.
By itself this option is rather useless, but enabling it will enable selection of drivers for the abovementioned devices. It is, however, incompatible with the old, reliable HIL keyboard driver, and the new HIL driver is experimental, so if you plan to use a HIL keyboard as your primary keyboard, you may wish to keep using that driver until the new HIL drivers have had more testing.

Greetings,
I'm still trying to get this HP PS/2 Optical Mouse to work on
antiX M11 486.
If anyone has any suggestions, I will try and post back results.

Being subscribed to the topic. I read every new post. I am out of ideas. So it's not like I'm ignoring you.
It seems to me to be a kernel issue.
Like on my Emachine 3407 Desktop. Only 2 kernels will boot on it. The stock AntiX 11 2.6.36 mepis kernel and a Liqourix 2.6..38 kernel. I tried all kinds of different kernels in smxi and downloaded from the forum.
I would hang at /dev waiting to be populated. I could wait for hours and not get past that error. At first I thought my wireless usb mouse might be the culprit. So I switched over to a cable mouse. Same hang up at same point
I have a theory that the internal/built in bay SD card reader on that desktop is what is making that Desktop picky with what kernel will boot on it.
If willing to try another experiment. Try Burning and Booting a

Quote:"an i8042 carrying microcode to manage a few miscellaneous devices on some Hewlett Packard systems."
A lot to explain. I read the first 2 pages of yr post and then jumped here.
1. CHS sector 0 is your bootmaster location. As Windoze thinks he'll ever be the only system it overrides it every time. All Linuxes check with an backup copy and at this point all the hell rise (in simplest possible terms). When re-format an HDD use an Linux program like parted, gparted (in antiX live CD), etc. It will see there was an Windoze.
2. On the first page Roky sensed right: most probably you have an hardware problem. Back in the days when your system was new HP and Compaq didn't respect a lot of standards (in fact they employed some of the first computer factories in Mainland China but this is history). Now they merged... Possibly DSL community met the HP problem and solved it somehow.
My advice cost you abt 10 USD and less than 6 posting pages __{{emoticon}}__ : Buy the cheapest mouse and test it. If it works, your old mouse finished his time. If Not.... sorry... dump this hardware. Most probably you'll never find compatible hardware for this machine. I mean, for instance, an mouse which can follow non-standard orders from his controller.
Best of luck
Edit: This advice is only for really non-standard machines. I type this on an 12 yrs old AMD Sempron (not Athlon) with an quite low FSB, assembled at home... long ago.

Greetings lavsan,
Thanks for your post.
I agree with how Windows (you stated Windoze) thinks it's the only OS out there.
Also note that Windows has it's own bootloader ... when I last checked it was (maybe is)
the NTLoader or NTLDR...
Your advice with the HP PS/2 Optical mouse would be applicable ... in regards to dumping
it as useless hardware ... IF ... it was non functionable. This HP PS/2 is fully functionable.
When I connect the mouse to Windows (98, 2000, XP pro, Win 7) it works fine these system
range from desktops to laptops (netbooks in between).
Indeed from a historical standpoint it is ironic, or even hillarious how HP & Compaq merged.
I always loved those red Compaq T-shirts, after a rack server build ... I still have one ...
although it has wholes in it at the bottom ... I still wear it with pride. I also loved and enjoyed
the type of architecture Compaq used to use and also build quality for their desktop machines.
rokytnji is very keen, and also immensely helpful ... and in his last post he's very much so
right when he states that this maybe a kernel issue ("...It seems to me to be a kernel issue."). I think that the hardware will do yet
something from release of 2.4.x to 2.6.x doesn't have what needed to get this mouse recognized.
Therefore I agree with you in addressing the fact that DSL (Knoppix) corrected or carried over
something that the other linux distros did not.
Again I thank you ... and hopefully we can see that this HP PS/2 optical mouse can work as
it does in DSL.
NOTE: the version of DSL is 2.4.x

Greetings Dave,
Could you please tell me how I'd get back to the current 2.6.3x that's running with antiX M11
after I'm done with this test to revert back to debian 2.4.22.
I do thank you and I look forward in doing this test, however I'd like to be able to
revert back, hopefully without reinstalling antiX M11.
Thanks for the link.Posted: Fri Apr 20, 2012 5:40 am

Greetings rokytnji,
Here are the results:
I downloaded the .iso (32 (i486) architecture) for semplice-linux at:
I didn't download the SHA (however if anyone else needs it in the future, I've
posted it below:)
The md5sum checked ok.
I created a boot CD.
I inserted the boot CD (semplice v2.0.2_203) in the box's cd rom.
It took more than 30 minutes to load the live CD.
The desktop did not load properly.
I was able to bring up the terminal in semplice v2.0.2_203 by pressing the F12 key.
I then pressed the F11 key to have the terminal viewed in full screen.
I obtained the following data:
I was never able to completely see the desktop fully loaded ... I only saw the panel below and it looked
like a system tray (consisting of network icon, a beatle, a P clipboard, and the date)
MAYBE the P clipboard is for mounted or mounting of devices like in Puppy Linux.
Also the desktop background remained a royal purple color with the panel below being a shade or two darker.
No icons were on the desktop.
To conclude, I never saw the desktop and never saw the mouse icon.
This distro version of semplice v2.0.2_203 has a much recent linux kernel running than
antiX M11 immediately after install.
Maybe this is a configuration issue ... yet ... the terminal ran all of the commands with no problems.
I thank you again for the introduction of semplice (I'll try it on a more recent box) and I pray
that the result posted above could aid in getting the HP PS/2 Optical mouse to work with antiX.
Again thanks for introduction to semplic - linux.Posted: Thu Apr 19, 2012 10:32 pm

As long as you do not remove the 2.6.3X kernel it will always be able to boot (granted you have grub setup for it).
I think all you will need to do is download the kernel and headers, install them with dpkg -i, and then run update-grub so you will have menu entries for both kernels. I am not sure, but it may kick back with dependency issues, if so I know you can force the install but I do not remember how.

Greetings Dave,
GRUB is running on this box.
I think I did see a setting that can ensure we could point to a different kernel.
I will take a look into the GRUB file ... I think this file is:
BTW: Would you happen to know how I could get SSH running automatically on boot?
Thanks Dave ... I'll follow up with you more once I get to the box.

If you have a new or/and unusual hardware you should try PuppEX. This is because the system when installed to harddisk can use kernel 3.1.5 with support for"all forms of" now used hardware.
