Upgrade script works ok (as far as i can tell) - the smxi script fails with a
"Error No: (3) The Ubuntu derived distro is not supported by smxi, sorry.
smxi cannot continue. Exiting now."

Error message - is this due to the Mepis kernel still being a re-hack of an Ubuntu one?

Having problems with getting the Nvidia drivers installed for my older card - wants to rip out X is use the Mepis 96xx one, but compiling the 96xx one from Nvidia causes problems due to GCC version difference...maybe module assistant can help....

no, it's because /etc/issue was changed to contain some reference to ubuntu. Please post the contents of /etc/issue:

I added an option to smxi to let users start optional scripts from the post upgrade options: the syntax is like this:

smxi -X antix-upgrader#

This would download and start the script when the user selects that option in the post upgrade option list. The name itself isn't important, that is just what smxi will use internally, the name is the part before the #, the download url is the part after.

Obviously it's easier to create shortcut urls, using a service like dyndns.com, that are easier to remember, pointing to the full pathname of the script on the web server, like so: antix-upgrader.webhop.org

This will then be run as an extra option in the post dist upgrade options sectoin, called: run-<script name>

Added an antix filter to the ubuntu detection. I don't know if antix ever used the ubuntu base, but if it did, your system will get destroyed if you try to convert it to debian based.

The only version of antiX to use a Ubuntu base (actually it was based on Mepis 6.5 which used a Ubuntu base) was the first release, called antiX-Mepis6.5 code named"Spartacus'.
All other antiX iso's including tests are Debian based.

I think Acesabe is using M7.5.

Editing that out gets over the first hurdle - lets see if sucking in a newer kernel that will allow Nvidia drivers to be installed without issues...

antiX changed the /etc/issue to remove the Ubuntu reference from Lysistrata release (M7)

Well - this started out as AntiX 7.5 test 1, but I have played around a bit - but not sure why the /etc/issue has reverted...

Anyway - just tried using the smxi util to install a newer kernel and associated legacy Nvidia driver - and blow me if it hasn't worked!! Considering that I really felt a bit like I was flying a helicopter for the first time while running this snxi script - the results are pretty darn good! Finally - KDE 4 (Mepis __{{emoticon}}__ running on my 'old' laptop! Mwaah ha-haaa! - Flux and IceWM (esp the new theme) still totally rockin'! I would report bugs - but this install wasn't typical or reproducible - so wouldn't be fair really. Need to try this on another fresh PC really...Great work all!

If you installed from Mepis 8 repos, maybe it affected /etc/issue?

smxi is really a great enhancement to antiX.

I'll blow my own trumpet now.

antiX plus smxi is probably one of the most versatile distros out there. You have the choice of keeping it Etch plus Lenny-based (default), sid-based, sidux-based, you can/will be able to install kernels from sidux, Mepis (antiX, maybe) and in the future probably Debian (with a bit of work).

Not sure why /etc/issue is like that. I'm on 7.2 updated to 7.5 and this is what I get.
