Not sure if I need to forward to Warren as a bug? Have not noticed any problems though.

Needless to say, the new Mepis on LiveCd is very slow on this desktop, whereas antiX is quite snappy! All that KDE overhead I assume.

cheers,

Thanks for the warning. I think some at ML have noticed this. I'm sure Warren will fix it.

FWIW I don't get the error.

MEPIS, on the whole, doesn't run too badly with 512MB RAM (installed), sidux runs better, but other distros I (briefly) tried were much worse ie openSUSE, MINT, Ubuntu, Fedora.

anti, I think you could include gcolor2. Even though mtPaint has a color chooser it's much simpler to use gcolor2 if that's the only thing one wants to do. Besides that it has the names of the colours which is useful for instance to set up colours in Conky (most of them work):

Once I had a chance to run the installed version of Beta 2, I ran into a lot of problems, mostly stemming from udev issues and Roxterm unable to run. Downloading Beta 3 now, which I hope to try out soon. Hopefully, based on what I am reading, most of the issues will be resolved, and more have already been identified and fixed. Sorry that I have not been in earlier to test.

On a side note, the ipw2200 module for Intel Pro Wireless 2200 wireless interfaces was not working right in SimplyMEPIS 8.5 Beta 2; chances are that it may be a problem if inherited from SimplyMEPIS. Hope to get a chance to report that on the MEPIS forums; unfortunately, it is late and I've not had much time to either test or report issues with either antiX or SimplyMEPIS. Also, I don't have much opportunity to test on my Dell Latitude D600 any more, which is where the IPW2200 is located, so not sure how often I can verify things on that box; I hope to at least be able to test on my Gateway PA6A and Lenovo Y410 laptop models and get some useful feedback to you in time to be of value.

Keep plugging; lots of good stuff here, in spite of the bumps along the way. I am optimistic that we can collectively find and fix the remaining issues. Keep up the good work!

Thanks! Assuming I GET THERE, I will see if that is an issue for me and whether or not your suggestions solve the problems that I noticed. In my case, I believe it is some aging hardware that is starting to lose support. In SimplyMEPIS 8.0, the Dell D600 laptop had a PAE kernel error that was able to get fixed. With this release, it was another hardware related error, this time with the wireless firmware for the IPW (Intel Pro Wireless) 2200, nothing specific with wicd, though that may surface later as another issue. In my case, I could run the D600 live, but I could not run it installed because I was getting boot time errors which output a dozen or more errors about either IPU or IPW 2200, which is why I am assuming that issue pertains to the firmware rather than something else, but there could well be multiple, unrelated issues outstanding.

The good news here is that I stayed up and installed antiX Beta 3 on the Gateway, and I am here with the results - the udev issues seem to be gone and the roxterm errors are also gone, so some solid improvement over the previous release, definitely! Thanks for all of the hard work, it keeps getting better!

Ok, Now that I got wireless finally straightened out. I figure I would tackle DVD playing movies next. Sorry Anti. All I have is a DVDROM on this Laptop. No CDRW or DVDRW. I insert Blood Diamond Movie. Try to open just Mplayer from menu. Get a crash report. So I go into synaptic. I just tell it to reinstall Mplayer after my adventures with Wicd 1.6 as I don't wish to uninstall and reinstall just yet. Just tell it to reinstall only and also installed Mplayer Docs also. After I am done. I open Mplayer again and this time it opens up OK. I change the skin to blue, (personal pref) , and tell it to open Blood Diamond. I tried this 2 different ways. One without mounting DVDROM through File Manager. The other way was with DVDROM mounted first through file manager then open Mplayer.

Like I said. It opens Mplayer GUI just fine from the Menu now. Right click screen and try both/either/or Open DVD choices from the menu and I get verbatim
Fatal error

Error opening/initializing the selected video_out (-vo) device
I say OK. The movie starts playing because I can hear it. But the screen disappears.
I can select chapters by fast foward. but no video. (of course from what the Fatal Error says)

Gnome Mplayer plays the same movie just fine in full screen also. No problems so far with Gnome Mplayer. IceM suggested I should go with Mplayer-No GUI in Synaptic. He is having fits with GUI Mplayer also from what I can gather from the chat. Maybe newer apps are not better lately. Seems like the older programs seem to work better lately. At least in my case. __{{emoticon}}__

I will edit the mplayergui/conf file to X11 and see if that fixes it. Just googled it.

Edit the preferences in (g)mplayer from /etc/mplayer/mplayer.conf, near the top

# Specify default video driver (see -vo help for a list).

Works with x11 or xv entered in /mplayer/gui.config Anti. Haven't gone to -vo help yet. Plodding along here.

except for the gmplayer crashes, it also freezes on mkv playback in gmplayer, gnome-mplayer and mplayer. i know it's the same mplayer for all of them. also if i try to reinstall it it doesn't work at all. after i switched to mplayer-nogui i have no problems in mplayer or gnome-mplayer. the mplayer in antix is rc3 and mplayer-nogui is rc2.

i saw in mepislovers that a 486 kernel is out for old computers. will antix have that? and how it affects my i686 computer?

Good info on the mkv files ice. For the record, I've tried avi and h.264 files with the defaults, and gnome-mplayer starts from the file manager ok.

I tried beta3 on my old Dell inspiron laptop (which I have managed to revive by adding a different monitor) and I was unable to get AntiX to boot.

It died very early in the boot, several msg about ACPI: has zero elements and then one more msg

Total memory available: XXXX, Memory free: XXXXX (XX stands for some numbers). After this it just hangs there.

Other versions of AntiX (prior to 8.5 I mean) have always worked great with this box.

Any suggestions how to get past this problem? I tried ACPI=off in the grub menu line but that did not fix it.

thanks
Pedro
