BTW be careful of upgrades. At the moment, if you do apt-get distupgrade (recommended) it will pull in libsystemd0 since our nosystemd version of openshh is waiting to hit the repos.

Where do I begin? It is being one of those bad days.
Booted up in MX-16 to post this. AntiX 17 is installed to /dev/sda1 and MX-16 grub controls booting as I installed AntiX 17 grub to root instead of mbr. sudo update grub in MX 16 and so far so good. Antix 17 entry makes into the menu.
Now for basic info. This computer is my motorcycle shop office media center. It used to be a city hall server.
All the usb Realtek entries are me trying out different wireless usb dongles to get AntiX 17 to connect. I could probably grab one of my Wireless G ones. But out here in the shop. Which is far away from my home router. Wireless N barely cuts the mustard with wireless connection with the shop doors wide open.
Ceni reports when trying to connect RT8191SU usb dongle to wlan0.
Try firefox. No connection. Coky has the wlan0 graphs running.
Wicd sees my router. But throws bad password. I figure the driver authentication error to be at fault for that bad password error. Conky is thowing the wlan0 readouts on and off intermittently.
Poor baby. The strain is just to much for her.
So kernel antix 4.10.1 don't like that usb wireless dongle.
The other realtek wireless usb.
AntiX 17 AND MX 16 don't even wanna see a wireless interface on that usb. It is invisible if not for lsusb.
Shows no driver at all in kernel for either MX or Antix.
Then to cap it all off. Like I said. Bad day all around here.
sudo ifconfig -a and ifconfig -a as root in AntiX 17 terminal
You can shoot me. I'm done for today. __{{emoticon}}__
Edit: as usual. md5sum was checked and verified first before making live usb. Live usb was made in MX live usb maker. Live session booted OK.
Side note I forgot. When I saved the ceni report as a text fie.
In MX it shows as text document. In AntiX 17 in rox file manager checking properties. It says it is a music file and has a couple of musical notes as the graphic on top the file facing the user.
I have to select openm as a text document in antix with right click to read it. No default run action for that file property it gave it. I could give xmms as a run action for that file property.
But catch-22. No use in doing that. It won't run.

This for the usb stick that mx and antix don't even see a wireless interface.
When he says it won't work. Lets hope that applies to older kernels.

I know it says it is for kernel 4.4 and that I might be just pounding sand up my butt. But I gotta try it out in kernel 4.10.1 for giggles. I can always re-install later if need be.Realtek RTL8192EU chipset (0bda:818b)
6. For the Realtek chipset RTL8192EU you'll need to install a driver. That might sound complicated, but I've made it easy for you:
a. Download the following compressed driver package, which is fit for the 4.4 kernel series (in other kernel series it probably won't work): driver for the RTL8192EU chipset
Background information: this driver package is an improved version of the driver package that the Maxxter company provided for a wireless dongle of theirs, which contains this chipset. The original driver only works in old versions of Ubuntu and Mint, but the improved version also works in Ubuntu 16.04/16.04.1 and Linux Mint 18/18.1 (thanks to Pilot6).
b. The package should have been downloaded into the folder Downloads. Simply double-click it like you would do for an installer package in Windows. It'll be installed automatically.
c. Then reboot your computer.
d. Plug the wireless dongle with the Realtek chipset into your computer: it should work now.
Note: do NOT install newer kernels, because then you'll probably lose the driver again! So in Linux Mint I advise to switch to the update policy"Don't break my computer!", which you can select by means of Update Manager (panel: Edit - Update policy). In Ubuntu I advise to pin Ubuntu to the current kernel (item 7, left column).
When he says it won't work. Lets hope that applies to older kernels.

I think the devs could recompile the driver for linux4.10. Try it with linux4.4 if it at least works as intended.rokytnji wrote:

Update: Posting on the above desktop now on AntiX 17.
USB link above was a no show as far as installing debs. Errors were mostly lib6-dev related needed but are not available and won't be installed.
Figured since a live session before the install. A catch-22 with sudo apt-get update and then try to install a outside downloaded .alldeb. So here was what I did. I gave up trying to use the wireless N usb hardware and put them in my drawer. I pulled out a old Wireless G pci card I knew was kernel friendly. I tore apart tyhe tower and installed the card and antenna.
Then I drilled a hole in my steel walls on my shop. I ran a coax outside and mounted a TV antenna on the outside walls.
I tie-wrapped the coax going through the wall around the wireless G pci card antenna. To get a good un-conventi0onal fasten. Booted up. I got 70 percent signal. Which is good enough for this media center. Even on Wireless G.
Changed everything in conky wireless section from wlan0 to wlan1 because of hardware changes. Fixed broken package showing in synaptic from the usb ralink .deb failed install.
code] sudo apt-get update[/code]
went with no hitch
Holding off on a
in root terminal to test because of Anti's previous systemd warning post earlier in this thread.
This has not changed yet. Maybe it will fix itself after a dist-upgrade maybe?
this works though
@eugen-b
It was a lot easier doing the hardware customization so I could further test this release online.
Instead of fighting usb N dongles that are peripheral items and maybe not relevant to testing this release.
That was my logic on how to proceed with this. __{{emoticon}}__
Also. I have outside projects outside of computing that take up my time.
So that makes me a king in procrastination when it comes to Linux testing.
I got all kinds of excuses for ya. __{{emoticon}}__

Running a install with no connection. Kind of a catch 22 situation with me trying to install anything without needed dependencies being pulled in during the install process. So no kernel 4.4 to even download and copy and pasting .debs from pendrive only to to see errors thrown during the install process because of no internet connection. Installed on 32 bit Acer Aspire ONE netbook (see inxi below):
02-Apr-'17
1. After changed to black background, Conky had blue backgrnd. Set own_window = false and it works even better
2. Tried wicd for Network and failed. Ran ceni and setup both eth0 & wlan0.
3. Can't play the D_O Personal menu video -- Streamlight Errored out.
4. CalCurse is nice but still wish for 'cal -N3' for quick calendar.
5. Simplest Black seems to work best for me. There is more contrast in the network & system monitor. [Actually, now using even better antiX-Green]
6. I like the lxterminal over rox-term.
7. The 'new' IceWM seems improved. Seems as fast as ever. Really nice on this netbook.
NOTE added:
03-Apr-'17
Did # apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade this morning. Apparently, AOK.
8. Have to use Ceni to reconnect to internet after each reboot
9. Network monitor not showing in taskbar, even though I selected it in Preferences.
10. Change of Background now survives change.
11. Weird error of Firefox has not returned. Will know for sure after this post.
12. Change of theme to antiX-Green seems to be a good combination.
13. I made a snapshot last night, md5sum OK, copied to Ez2Boot SB and booted without problem from the USB.
14. This afternoon, ranabout 29 updates. All seems well.
Nice so far. Looking forward to the next iteration.
What did you do to IceWM? Still nice --but don't notice changes.
Will advise if it happens again.

dug out the old eeepc 904ha, which had been doing duty as a media player device. now running antix 17 alpha 2.
no problems so far. ceni works better on 17 than on 16. go figure. on 16, ceni froze for several minutes on this machine when building the list of interfaces and when scanning networks, although it would eventually work. 17 has no such problem.
and battery meter in icewm by default! nice.
this machine defaults to the intel driver instead of"modesetting". my thinkpad defaults to"modesetting".
I'll be playing with this for a while.
In installed firefox 52 direct from mozilla, and was able to watch netflix (although the hardware isn't up to it anymore).

Worked on this last evening, posting info will edit later as I have to run now.
Syanptic fails to work, gufw missing, so finally used apt-get upgrade and install to add gufw, gufw not working still. wireless worked with ceni, then dropped, tried wicd it could not detect any wireless networks, did the preferences thing but still failed to work. removed configuration from ceni and reconfigured wlan0 got wireless working but had random drops every time I tried synaptic. Changed my router to wpa2 aes got online with ceni, did apt-get update && apt-get dist upgrade. All went well. removed gufw and then reinstalled, still errors, so discovered I needed to apt-get install net-tools and now gufw works as it should. Shutdown. Restarted this morning and firewall up and running and wireless connected. Ok, tried synaptic and evidently the additon of net-tools fixed the synaptic problem, as it works fine now.
cheers

Finally got time to install and test this on my trusty old Dell 700m laptop:What I found so far:
--wicd failed to see anything, ceni worked fine
--Installer: says"Debian Stable" on first screen. Does that change with the selection or is it a leftover?
--after installation, XP partition not seen
--installer icon still on desktop

antiX-17-a2 32 bit only for testing
First public alpha build of Debian stretch based antiX-17-full (32 bit for now).
You will notice it no longer fits on a cd.
Default cheats disable wicd and user will need to use ceni to connect to net (wlan and/or ethernet).
Some debranded MX are included.
Luckybackup is locally built by me with qt5 and needs testing.

Successful hardware install of AntiX 17a2 Full on 17-year-old Thinkpad 600x ! :
Just did a default install (only changed services not starting up bluetooth and scanner) on a crappy old hard drive to see if it would work ok. Initially looking good. Had to manually get PCMCIA Ethernet to work using Control Centre (I've got a USB Wi-Fi thing coming soon that I'll test later). looks like this will run well enough (using the lighter apps anyway) like AntiX 13.2, 15v, and 16.1 did despite the age and hardware limitations.
FWIW, Several other computers (sig below) have also worked with the 17a2 Live DVD .iso (yes spinning disc not usb stick).
One (NetVista x41) I had to install on the HDD externally and then put the HDD in the machine, a CD would have been nice but not essential since even my old Toshiba from 1998 is DVD capable (I'll try a HDD install on that later, if free time allows) to push the minimal limit of what AntiX 17 can handle.
Once again great work by the AntiX team -- THANK YOU all for your hardwork! I've been slowly moving from Windows and Mac to Linux and I really appreciate all that you do to bring people like me over!
I'm guessing, but is the target date for AntiX 17 the end of June-ish?

This elder computer seems like about the bare minimum that the full Antix17 can handle with only a 266MHz Pentium II and 192MB of RAM (much slower than Windows 98se runs on it, but runs it does), and here I am on the latest Linux in 2017 posting on this internet forum from a 1998 laptop -- pretty damn cool -- Thanks AntiX team!
