Just an updated list for now. If solutions are found please quote the Problem/Solution section and make an altered copy __{{emoticon}}__

Code: Select all

Problem: Conky sometimes disappears when starting a session and / or rox pinboard produces an error
Solution: Adjust startup delay in / etc/desktop-session.conf to 2 or greater.

Problem: Installer copies files as *root* to user home resulting in the inability to run / save program settings (geany / gtk).
Solution: Move skel copy strings from installer to /usr/share/desktop-session/first-run-script

Problem: Desktop menu has only an entry for adding desktop files. There should be a remove desktop files option as well.
Solution: add remove desktop item to the desktop menu.

Problem: add desktop is maybe miss-named... open for suggestions to the name change
Solution: Change name... (add/remove items?)

Problem: Standard Items in Personal menu are not editable / do not follow user selected defaults.
Solution: edit / etc/xdg/menus/TCM-MENU.menu by commenting out / removing" <AppDir>/usr/share/desktop-defaults/defaults/</AppDir>"
              add"desktop-menu --menu-file='/ etc/xdg/menus/TCM-MENU.menu' --write-out --write-out-file='personal'" to /usr/share/desktop-session/first-run-script

Problem: Spacefm Automount (pmount) fails erroring that mtab/fstab contains entry already
Solution: unknown

Problem: / etc/default/grub set wrong. No quiet mode, not as nice of a theme as previous, etc... just needs refining being the first time with grub 2.
Solution: Set proper defaults and have someone make a nice theme like 4 MX... install grub-customizer to help?

Problem: System D live boot missing"quiet" boot parameter
Solution: add"quiet" to extlinux and syslinux boot strings.

Problem: Fluxbox menu -> desktop -> session settings global does not open root text editor with config.
Solution: Remove the () around (Global)

Problem: Keys files not coherent with the other window managers
Solution: Update Keys Files

Problem: JWM Keys file opening applications as root when attempting to make capital letters
Solution: Update jwm keys file

Problem: Conky sits on top of other windows when restarting / starting
Solution: add " wmctrl -F -r"Conky ($HOST)" add,below" to conky section of desktop-session

Problem: Conky missing screen resolution
Solution: add ${color}${execi 100 xdpyinfo | sed -n -r"s/^\s*dimensions:.*\s([0-9]+x[0-9]+).*/\1/p"} to conky rcs'

Problem: Items from default desktop and personal menu are duplicated in the applications menu
Solution: add filters to xdg/menus/* or add Item to NoDisplay in the various .desktop files.

Problem: fluxbox menu has duplicated entries for updating the menu. One under update menus and the other under fluxbox settings.
Solution: remove the one from fluxbox settings.

Problem: set-screen-blank errors out first run due to lack of ~/.desktop-session/desktop-session.conf
Solution: Add ~/.desktop-session/desktop-session.conf to / etc/desktop-session/file_compare

Problem: With user protect enabled, nothing gets updated with the global counterparts when updated. Meanwhile when not protected everything is updated without knowledge.
Solution: Make intermediate option where nothing is updated and a prompt is presented as to what to update when there is an update available the user logs on.

Problem: Control-Center -> edit system moniter always opens the same conky file.
Solution: make control center read desktop session and open appropriate config ( a lib entry may be needed for desktop and control center to share )

Problem: Conky persist enabled check is too frequent
Solution: bump time value from 10 to 100

Problem: Conky root FS Used value @ 99% live
Solution: Unkown

Problem: Conky font difficult to read
Solution: Change font."xftfont DejaVu Sans:bold:size=9"

Problem: rox-fluxbox missing from alternative desktops menu
Solution: Unknown

Problem: Browser is closed when switching / reloading desktop session
Solution: Unknown

Problem: sbins not in system path for user... only root
Solution: add"PATH=$PATH:/sbin:/usr/sbin" to ~/.bashrc

Problem: Installer does not work with a gpt partitioned disk
Solution: refer to updated MX installer

Problem: Homepage differs between RD and RV versions
Solution: Unknown... ASSUME copy the config between versions

Problem: All packages in antix repo are listed twice
Solution: Comment out stable repo

Problem: RD not ejecting CD's on shutdown
Solution: Unknown

Problem: Control center lacking quick access to manipulate desktop-session settings (.conf / startup / file_compare / etc....)
Solution: add item to edit such configs in session section of control center

Problem: Add Desktop under tools no longer works...
Solution: change exec portion of menu to point to add-desktop or remove in favor of duplicate item in desktop submenu

Problem: unclear what add desktop does under the desktop sub menu
Solution: change name and update program.

Problem: Gdebi not auto updating menu as it directly utilizes dpkg not apt, therefor the apt hook does not come into play
Solution: Move /usr/bin/update-menus, Symlink /usr/bin/update-menus with apt update script, and run moved update-menus in apt script.

Problem: Menu lacking entry for synaptic
Solution: add / modify .desktop file for synaptic

Problem: Ceni will not work with wireless but wicd does
Solution: Unknown ASSUME that wicd is"taking over" in the RD version (/ var/run/wpa_supplicant existing and should be remove to run ceni)

Problem: Geany remembering the previously opened files as default
Solution: Set geany config to forget previous files on startup as default

Problem: Swap not automatically turning on in live USB
Solution: Unknown

Problem: inxi reporting false window manager identification (fluxbox ok)
Solution: Unknown

Problem: Persistance not asking to change passwords... normal?
Solution: Unknown

Solution: Update desktop-menu script

Problem: Persists save runs twice on reboot jamming shutdown.
Solution: Unknown

Problem: Update Menus --> Update Local Menu overwrites the global menu based on going through the symlink.
Solution: Destroy the local menu update.
             **** OR ****
Destroy the symlink before writing a local menu
             **** OR ****
Write a local menu to a different location.

Problem: after running add/remove desktop for personal menu items the menu is not refreshed
Solution: add"desktop-menu --menu-file='/ etc/xdg/menus/TCM-MENU.menu' --write-out --write-out-file='personal'" call in add/remove desktop scripts

Problem: Touchpad not working
Solution: Unknown

Problem: Cli installer failing, and reporting success
Solution: Unknown

Problem: Spacefm not showing internal drives as default. As user allowable mount is not set in fstab...
Solution: Go up to the menu bar, and Devices>Settings>Show>Internal Drives (Better spacefm default config....)

Problem: Lacking links/ability in the control center to edit or change desktop-session related configuration
Solution: add a new tab (or incorporate into another tab) for various buttons to update session"stuff"
              Example: desktop-session.conf, desktop-defaults.conf, screen-blank, menu add/remove/update.

Problem: XDG autostart set to false in desktop-session. This can be default, or set to true as default.
Solution: Perhaps a poll to determine which should be set and why / how to overcome problems related to this.

BIG PROBLEM: Lacking info to the user on how to use stuff....
Solution: write a good howto!

This is by design, not by fault.
It is assumed by desktop-session that choosing rox as a desktop you would like rox as a file manager as well.
That is certainly a reasonable assumption, as is the assumption that an app called"desktop-defaults" will list the defaults. Its a little confusing to see all the other apps listed that are the current defaults, but not the file manager. Is there a way to hook desktop-defaults's file manager selection to the currently selected desktop choice?
Yes there can be!
Can I ask for a preference opinion?
Should the option either
1) always be there and flip based on what the session is. (requires knowing the session and the state of OVERRIDE_SESSION_FM=)
2) hide / display the option only when OVERRIDE_SESSION_FM="true" (requires only knowing the state of OVERRIDE_SESSION_FM=)

IMHO #2 but I will leave that up for decision.

2 sounds good... what does desktop-session assume when no desktop is present? how about a tick box for overriding desktop file manager selection?

It assumes whatever was selected for default file manager if no icon manager was chosen (fluxbox rather than rox-fluxbox.).
Seeing how the option would be invisible unless overridden does make that more difficult...perhaps whatever was last chosen. I did not think about that in my initial response.
A tick box should not be a problem.

Another issue is that the fbdev graphics driver now takes precedence over the vesa driver if the framebuffer is enabled. On the live system we enable the framebuffer by default at a resolution of 800x600 and this resolution gets carried over to X.

This only affects systems where a modeset driver is not available or when"F5 Video Mode" -->"safe" has been selected. A partial solution would be to eliminate the"safe" option and provide just"default" and"vesa". This still leaves people who have a graphics card that does not have a modeset driver with 800x600 resolution in X (such as in Virtual Box). If we can detect this situation then we can create an xorg.conf file (or a file in xorg.conf.d/) that forces the use of the vesa driver.

Ironically, even though there is a / etc/modprobe.d/fbdev-blacklist.conf file, I don't know how to blacklist the fbdev driver. It's not a kernel module and it does not show up in the output of lsmod.

the 32bit RD version of the alpha also exhibits the freeze up when the modesettings intel driver kicks in, so I'm thinking the 3.15 kernel has an issue with the intel driver (which I think agrees with BitJam's thoughts about regression).

D.O., I have a question about the system that can't poweroff or reboot. Does it work properly with MX-14 and/or earlier versions of antiX? If so then I think the problem is triggered by a combination of the newer kernel and your particular hardware. I'd like to get the specs of your hardware (make/model, lspci, other?) so I can include them in a bug report I will send upstream.

AFAIK, this is independent of the problem with the intel driver. Again, I know that driver has changed because it now works with my newish ValleyView Gen7 chipset so I'd bet the changes added a regression for your hardware. We should file a different bug report (to a different upstream) for this problem. I'd like to get you to file this bug report, but I can do it if you are not interested.

I just tried those systems today at lunch with the 32bit RD version. Same shutdown problem...hangs at the systemD message for"target shutdown..." The optiplex again shutsdown fine. The network interfaces do increment in both the versions of the alphas.

All my systems work fine with antiX 13 and MX-14, and the HP works fine with the 64 bit RD version (haven't tried 64bit RV).

The models in question are the HP and the EEEPC in my signature below. The systems are at home, so I'll have to post whatever you need once I get home.

I can file the bug report if you point me the right way.

Suggestion: a"What's New" html page

It should list and explain new features that users might otherwise be unaware of. It can be a local page so no network connection is needed to see it so it can be the default page of the browser. It can have links at the top to the forums etc. It should also have a list of known issues/bugs. We could have a manpage version with a line about it in the issue file along with the info about the CLI installer.

Here are some of the items I think it should include:
  • Desktop-session
  • The changes to the desktop menu and its updating

  • ========= SCRAPER REMOVED AN EMBEDDED LINK HERE ===========
    url was:"https://github.com/BitJam/Search-Bar"
    linktext was:"Search-bar scripts"
    ====================================
  • Easy Frugal install and easy persistence
  • splash-select (change framebuffer decoration in virtual consoles)
  • urxvt-style (and easy way to customize the urxvt terminal emulator)
  • Others?
The idea is to address the concern that some of our new features need to be advertised in order for users to know about then and how to use them. For example, in the past the update-default-desktop was added but not well advertised so we had to keep telling people about it in the forums. BTW: update-default-desktop is now no longer needed because desktop-session takes care of that job automatically now.

In the future (perhaps the near future) a"What's New" page could accompany the alpha and beta releases so testers know what to look at (and to reduce surprises).

I can whip up the html if others can outline how to in a rough draft in a thread (please separate from this one if possible) .

For clarity, a good releasenotes / whatsnew page should probably include images.
example:

========= SCRAPER REMOVED AN EMBEDDED LINK HERE ===========
url was:"http://www.linuxmint.com/rel_gloria_xfce_whatsnew.php"
linktext was:"http://www.linuxmint.com/rel_gloria_xfce_whatsnew.php"
====================================

Speaking of mint, they do a nice first-run (and 'til denied, via checkbox) python-powered welcome-y popup

========= SCRAPER REMOVED AN EMBEDDED LINK HERE ===========
url was:"https://github.com/linuxmint/mintwelcome"
linktext was:"https://github.com/linuxmint/mintwelcome"
====================================

The point is to offer some orientation to a new user immediately, without user having to find/click a desktop icon in order to access helpdocs.

Separate from the menu-y aspect of a"welcome" app, I personally like the"Did you know..." format as an extra help content delivery mechanism

Did you know...

Sorry, but need to add another problem.
Installed my printer on A3 64 bit (32 as well) RD and cups does not start as a service.
Assuming this is systemd related ATM seeing how those are the to results on google.
Starting cups by hand works fine. ( / usr/sbin/cupsd )
service cup status

Code: Select all

BitJam wrote:D.O., I have a question about the system that can't poweroff or reboot.

I can file the bug report if you point me the right way.
here is the info for the HP that doesn't shutdown. It does not have a problem with the intel driver with either the 32bits or the 64 bits
