Hmm... sounds interesting to try to get the backlight working on my laptop as well.
Can you tell me how to put this into command in the grub2-configuration (I have multi-boot with also Ubuntu... so grub2)? I tried to put it behind the line with codes but no effect.

I'm not sure about grub2, but I believe linux mint uses grub 2 as well, and I added the line right before the dashes at the end of the mint kernel line. you will have to remove any"nomodeset" code if you've been using that. Note that this is for intel graphics.

Thanks dolphin_oracle. Do I understand correctly that your brightness controls are working on Mint but not on antiX? If so, can you (did you) try removing nomodeset and adding:

Code: Select all

video.brightness_switch_enabled=1 video.use_bios_initial_backlight=0
If you find a combination that works, maybe we could add an"HP laptop" menu option.

sorry if I was as clear as mud. the controls are working fine now. my kernel line in grub looks like this.

Code: Select all

kernel /boot/vmlinuz-3.6.11-antix.1-486-smp root=/dev/sda5 quiet video.use_bios_initial_backlight=0
it actually boots up fine without any codes at all, its just the backlight is off by default. I never thought to try the brightness controls to raise the backlight. That works too.

Thanks again dolphin_oracle. I will try adding an"F4 Options" option labelled"HP Laptop" that contains"video.use_bios_initial_backlight=0" but does not contain"nomodeset". The biggest difficulty will be creating a new help page to explain this option. Does adding:

Code: Select all

video.brightness_switch_enabled=1
hurt anything? if not, then I will include that option as well in the same entry.

it doesn't hurt anything, but it doesn't work on its own either.

video.use_bios_initial_backlight=0 sets the backlight to maximum. I then use xbacklight -set 70 to set it to 70% (my preferred brightness).

indicates someone needed it for their HP laptop. Since it doesn't seem to hurt I figured I would add it (famous last words). The author appears to be technically competent so I believe him.

That's probably a good idea. I see author of the post you linked has a radeon video card in his box so it might be necessary in some cases.

anti,

Finally got some time to dl the beta, could not get wireless to work, the firmware pkg (firmware-ipw2x00) is missing from /lib/firmware, multiple entries in start->applications->system luckybackup 2 entries, start>applications>preferences gparted 2, synaptic 2, windows wireless 2. This is running on a live-cd, otherwise just a beautiful running OS. Will update when I install.

2edit: System>Shells>Root Terminal gives Error From Roxterm

Code: Select all

Error connecting to dbus: Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken.
then clicking ok on error msg, roxterm pops up, but when trying a root command such as:

Code: Select all

# iwconfig
bash: iwconfig: command not found

going along with OHH's multiple entries, not all of them work. for instance, in my machine only I've got 3 entries for synaptic in applications / preferences but only the 3rd synaptic entry works. the other two do not. same type of thing with gparted. this is with installed system.

The issue of multiple entries is fixed for next beta.
