In my time off-line since my last post, I've been using the time to try to get up to speed on some things I had no clue about. Knowledge is coming – slowly. Please consider the output of the following probes:
daniel@antiX1:~$ lsusb
Bus 001 Device 002: ID 148f:3070 Ralink Technology, Corp. RT2870/RT3070 Wireless Adapter
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
daniel@antiX1:~$ lsmod | grep ^rt
rt2870sta 301360 0
rt2800usb 24863 0
rt2x00usb 5549 1 rt2800usb
rt2x00lib 19017 2 rt2800usb,rt2x00usb
daniel@antiX1:~$
In the “lsusb” probe, you can see listed my usb adapter and the Linux driver installed. In research that I've done, I determined that I needed the rt2800 driver, so I downloaded it and it shows up in my “lsmod” probe. If I understand it correctly, and I'm not sure I do, I believe I now have a configuration problem. I need to somehow turn off (blacklist?) my native Linux driver, and enable the tr2800 driver. Is that right? In any case, I don't know what to do next. Anyone want to weigh in? Also, I've figured out how to take a screenshot and save it, but don't know how to post it here. All help is appreciated, thanks.

What have you tried to connect? If wicd is not working try ceni. One should work out.

I've used both. When I open up CENI, no networks are shown and I know there are at least 4 or 5 around my house including mine (my net is up as I can access it from another laptop). When I toggle to Wlan0 and hit scan, the window simply shows"no values". Wicd is similarily blank when I hit"connect". I was told this is because I don't have the correct driver installed. All of which brings me back to my original questions...

It might be that you also need the correct module loaded to recognize the driver. The instructions on the following page detail how to check that you have the correct module for your chip and, if not, how to install it and load it.
========= SCRAPER REMOVED AN EMBEDDED LINK HERE ===========
url was:"http://wiki.debian.org/rt2870sta"
linktext was:"http://wiki.debian.org/rt2870sta"
====================================
One quick check would be to type in a terminal:
su
(followed by password)
modprobe rt2870sta
iwconfig
(and that should show you card). If these are successful, then try ceni again.
I hope this helps.

OK, Here's what I get when I entered what you suggested:
root@antiX1:/home/daniel# modprobe rt2870sta
root@antiX1:/home/daniel# iwconfig
lo no wireless extensions.
eth0 no wireless extensions.
wlan0 IEEE 802.11bgn ESSID:off/any
Mode:Managed Access Point: Not-Associated Tx-Power=0 dBm
Retry long limit:7 RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off
Encryption key:off
Power Management:on
root@antiX1:/home/daniel#
I'm assuming that since everything says"no" or"off" nothing's doing what it should. What next?

Looks like the wireless card got picked up after modprobe. Run ceni and maybe it will work.
Best of luck.

Still no dice - when I run a scan on CENI the networks window shows"no values". Wcid also shows"no networks". I did do some reading on the Debian link you posted a few days ago, and contrary to what I thought I understood, it looks there that I actually need the rt2500 driver. I will try to follow the directions on that page and see where it leads. I may or may not have time tonight. If not, it'll have to wait till the first of next week as I'll be tied up over the weekend. I'll keep you posted either way. Thanks.

Just curious Dan. Did you put wlan0 in wicd preferences first before scanning?

Easy as pie. Just clik on the wicd icon in icewm taskbar or use control center to open wicd.
Hit the preferences tab. Type in wlan0 in wireless interface. Hit OK. Refresh. see if your router shows up. connect.

I opened up wcid and clicked on"preferences". I entered"wlan0" in wireless interface. I clicked on"Network" and then on"Find a Hidden Network". For the first time (that I noticed) it actually scanned, but found no network. I'm open to all suggestions.

Why are you trying to find a Hidden Network. I can connect to starbucks, mcdonalds, etc just by hitting the refresh button
