I do most of my work on remote cloud apps so don't really need too many apps on my laptop.

-gnu-pspp because my school is on the spss bus and I'd rather not use non-free software.
-matplotlib and numpy for terrific math graphics and math processing respectively.
-full html documentation for the preceding two, plus same for python, because I don't have a wireless card and I'm just learning programming so often need to refer to helpdocs.
-fvwm2. My favourite window mgr. Still trying to find the rc file to make it work as it did in SuSE 10.3. That's it, except to say I really like geany-- blows idle out of the water without being huge, slow, and overwhelming for a newbie as I find things like Eclipse are.

XFE -- the one and only File Manager in the Linux world
gPicView -- the image browser; also xNview for prior to gPicView-times' sake
xArchiver -- handles .rpm, .deb, prior to 0.5.2 had to add unRpm/unDeb package -- lately I need to add xz (for SlackWare's .txz), too; also add unace, arj, 7za
Nero -- paid for it when they released a Linux version
Opera -- paid for it when 3.60 was the latest, and used it since (sits and operates in its own folder)
Firefox -- because Opera is not keeping up with FlashPlayer (sits in its own folder)
aTerm -- for it's looks
RealPlayer 8 or 11 -- I like them (they sit and operate in ther own folder)

Definitely Guayadeque. It's the best (IMO) full featured and highly customizable music management app that uses very little memory. I also like that it uses an SQLite back-end so that I can query it as well.

Other than that I pretty much stick to the defaults in the distro. The only non open-source software that I need is Crashplan. It's the only off-site back up service (other than Tarsnap) that I trust because everything is heavily encrypted (448 bit!) before uploading. Unfortunately it relies on JRE but it only usually eats up about 70-80 MB of ram on my system.

ffmpeg , to convert various files to .mp4 for television viewing.
Gimp , because I use it alot.
Icedove , because I used thunderbird for so long , and I can setup 3 email accounts quickly and together.
Brasero , because it works easily for my needs.
VLC media player for those odd videos that gnome mplayer doesn't like.
Flashplugin-nonfree , because I need it sometimes.
Java runtime , the latest version.
Icetea , for iceweasel.
I really like spacefm , so I make it the default file manager.

Mostly I like the way antix comes"out of the box" just needs a few tweaks for my own useage.
