antiX-M8.2 comes with insserv (not set up) which should make antiX boot faster.
To set it up, as root in a terminal

dpkg-reconfigure insserv

Diversion.

If you want you can have antiX boot straight to desktop and no need to type in info at login screen.

Anti:

I tried your suggestion of typing dpkg-reconfigure insserv from a terminal as root, and I got the following:

Package `insserv' is not installed and no info is available.
Use dpkg --info (= dpkg-deb --info) to examine archive files,
and dpkg --contents (= dpkg-deb --contents) to list their contents.
/usr/sbin/dpkg-reconfigure: insserv is not installed

I guess this package did not get installed by the upgrader script?? I don't remember any errors when I ran it.

thanks.

Run the script again, just to be sure.
Check MEPIS repo is not timing out.

Yep I know about that option but I'm so used to type in username and password... I guess I'm just oldfashioned... __{{emoticon}}__

anti, do you mean the slim autologin option? For some reason I can't get it to work. If I set default user as"me" the username is shown as"me" but stops there. I must be doing something wrong.

You must uncomment (remove '#') the line

Code: Select all

autologin yes

Thanks secipolla. But now I'm really confused. In slim.conf, is it autologin or auto_login?

Either way it still hangs at my username. Is it possible slim was never upgraded? I know only the latest allowed that feature. How do I check the version?

What you need to do is download this slim deb file and in a root terminal

dpkg -i slim_1.3.1_i386.deb

You should now get auto slim.

(If asked to write over old slim.conf, say no)

I've found that I had to define the Default User in the section below the auto login in Slim.conf. Otherwise, it would always stop at the slim login.

Thanks, anti. The upgraded deb file fixed it. Thanks for all others help on this forum.

I tried configuring this today and received the following message:

Code: Select all

# dpkg-reconfigure insserv
info: Checking if it is safe to convert to dependency based boot.
error: Obsolete conffile /etc/init.d/mplayer left behind by package mplayer
info: Please check out this manually.
info: Refusing to convert boot sequence until this is fixed
info: See http://wiki.debian.org/LSBInitScripts/D ... yBasedBoot
info: for more information on how to solve these issues. Most likely,
info: it is a bug in the binary package with the init.d script in
info: question, and not with insserv.
error: Unable to enable dependency based boot system.
Not really sure what to do with that? Any ideas?

I have mplayer installe, but no mplayer file in /etc/init.d
Remove the file (save it in your user directory to be safe) then run dpkg-reconfigure insserv again.
