hello all,
i didn`t read that much of docu, but just put in the cd (i think infifada8). Installation went fine.
In the sources list are many entrys: stable, testing, wicd, virtualbox and the securtiy related.
Could i also use only the stable-repo?
If i want to upgrade to sid, would i just remove the comments at the unstable repos, add comments at the stable/testing ones? ( I allready did that, i removed all repos and just activated the unstable ones, it seem to have worked. Just want to know what i did wrong).
If one has got a link where the sources are explained, thanks a lot.
Antix is really good: fast, stable and a nice look.
I like it a lot, though most of the apps i don`t know yet.
topic title: sources.list(solved)

Firstly, welcome to antiX.
In antiX you have basically 3 choices.
1. Use the default Testing repos which will keep antiX a rolling release, but there may be some problems on the way. (usually minor)
2. Change the repos to only point to the stable repos (and the MEPIS one). This should ensure a rock solid distro, but apps soon get out of date. (relatively speaking)
3. Enable sid/unstable repos. This has the advantage of having the latest and greatest from Debian in antiX, but sid is likely to break if you are not careful. (again breakage is often temporary and for particular apps rather than a total breakage)
Personally I run option 3, though others here run options 1 and 2.
If you are not sure about what you want to use or have any questions, just post. This forum is full of helpful and knowledgeable people.
Enjoy antiX!

Basically that's all. But running on unstable may be tricky. Let anti and the more experienced ones tell you.
Also you must keep an eye at the 'Sid upgraders' topic in this forum.
Where are you from? I see your keyboard isn't properly set.

If you you use stable, then there is a way to get up to date apps via the MEPIS Community repo.
I think the one in antiX-M8 is out of date. (The server got changed)
For a complete Stable plus MEPIS Community repo sources.list
is all you really need.

The teharris is the new MEPIS Community repo. It provides up to date packages without breaking the base core ie the stable base.

another question:
As i understand the teharris-community-repo has got newer software. If i wanna make use of it, do i just
add the repo or - when installing- have to tell apt-get to make use of it? If yes, with what syntax?
thanks
btw: i installed the M8-antix yesterday night. First in virtualbox, as it didn`t go well on harddisk.
Went good and, as said, is really faster than in vbox (though the tempo in vbox is also amazing).
ok, got it now.Hal343 wrote:I think he was just ribbing you about spelling mistakes in first post.

Ok if you have antiX-M8 installed to hard drive do this:
Open antiX control centre, system, edit config files
(you'll be prompted for root password)
sources.list tab
add this line to the bottom
deb
========= SCRAPER REMOVED AN EMBEDDED LINK HERE ===========
url was:"http://teharris.net/mepiscr/repo/"
linktext was:"http://teharris.net/mepiscr/repo/"
====================================
" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false mepis8cr main non-free
Click the X in the corner and save.

Don't want to stir things, but shouldn't he change to too?
Code: Select all

thanks, i think i got it that way, but it won`t hurd posting my sources to check:
I think its correct.
My question about the teharris-repos is: how to i install software from there:
a)once the sources are updated the newer versions are taken without further effort
b) i have to make use of a special syntax (like: apt-get install -t lenny-backports package).
Code: Select all
#Mepis8
deb ftp://ftp.mepis.com/mepis/ mepis-8.0 main
deb http://teharris.net/mepiscr/repo/ mepis8cr main non-free

deb-src http://ftp.de.debian.org/debian/ stable main contrib non-free
# mplayer
deb http://www.debian-multimedia.org stable main

Almost.
Yes a) is correct.
You can see apps from the teharris.net in synaptic
Code: Select all
#Mepis8
deb ftp://ftp.mepis.com/mepis/ mepis-8.0 main
