I've been having a terrible time with antiX 13. I've used 12 (Edelweißpiraten) on my Dell netbook since September last year and it's been absolutely solid. Last month I decided to move to Luddite and have had trouble.ever since.

In the first instance it runs fine but after a while (not immediately) an enormous upgrade (8/900 files) comes along & things go bad. The worst thing is that Roxterm won't run & I'm left using the x-terminal-emulator which is OK except that gpm wont run in graphic mode but there are other problems:

Neither Synaptics nor the antiXcc will run
On occasion none of the icons show up - the following sequence seems to sort that out:

Code: Select all

         113 sudo apt-get autoclean
         115 sudo apt-get autoremove
         121 sudo apt-get check
         284 sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
         323 sudo apt-get check
         325 sudo apt-get -f install
but it takes for ever to run.
On one occasion I appeared to lose all the passwords saved in Iceweasel & the sychronisation appeared to have broken down. For a horrid moment I thought I'd managed to collect a virus or something - it eventually sorted itself out - but I have no idea why.

Code: Select all

Theme parsing error says it all. Change the theme.

More specifically, change to a non-gtk3 theme. these would be the themes you select in the Customize Look and Feel app (lxappearance).

ah the joys of debian testing.

Thanks to both of you for the help - particularly D-O, pointing me at lxappearance was a life saver. I'm not absolutely sure how it works, I was using the GTK theme which I changed to Redmond but the toolbar has kept the old GTK stuff unchanged - which I'm delighted about, I can't see the new buttons & icons clearly, the old school GTK suits me perfectly.

Everything seems to be more or less under control now - except for Synaptic, which I do like to have to find out what's available. Here's the output from the terminal

Code: Select all

Run lxappearance in a root terminal.

It is all gtk3's fault as they keep changing how they set up the themes. You could try installing the medittaranean themes in the repo and using one of them. Seems to be ok here so far as is Adwaita Elements and clearlookd-phenix

Thanks AC, I'll give it a go - and what does this mean?

Code: Select all

Bash - 4.2.45: lxappearance
Gtk-Message: (for origin information, set GTK_DEBUG): failed to retrieve property `GtkRange::activate-slider' of type `gboolean' from rc file value"((GString*) 0xa09c580)" of type `GString'

Don't know about that message.

If I am reading it right it means it is looking for activate-slider in the theme configuration file and cannot find it. The other thing it might be is that it found that option in the configuration file, but the value it represents is the wrong type of value.

BUT - I still have a problem (I could live with it but I'd rather not have to).

I have:

Code: Select all

   "audible_bell=0" in .config/roxterm.sourceforge.net/Profiles/dmk01
and

Code: Select all

   "gtk-error-bell=0" in .gtkrc-2.0.mine
and Synaptic still squeals like a stuck pig. Is there anything I can do? __{{emoticon}}__

I don't understand why Synaptic would be running in a Roxterm but I turn the terminal bell off everywhere by making (or editing) the file / etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf and adding the line:

Code: Select all

blacklist pcspkr
To get immediate relief, run:

Code: Select all

sudo rmmod pcspkr
Maybe I misunderstood what you are trying to do.

Did you run lxappearance as root user and change the theme?

duncan_mk, you mentioned that “an enormous upgrade (8/900 files) comes along & things go bad”. Could that be the problem here?
I too had done the “run lxappearance as root user and change the them” and that fixed fixed it. But...
I just did an apt-get update and dist-uprade, and found that the theme as root had reverted back to the original default (Zukitwo, right?) and once again synaptic would not open. So, redid the “run lxappearance as root user and change the them” and all was well again.

AC, BJ & drg - sorry if it seems I've been ignoring you - not intentional but other prob's have turned up (can't play U-Tube for one) and I'm going back to basics. I've put the 64bit version on my Samsung & I'm having trouble with that. Well,"Oy en't too wurr-ed 'bout thet" as we say hereabouts but I am worried about the Dell netbook on which (having tried a raft of unsuccessful distro's) it's always been stable.

What I'm doing is setting up both the 32 & 64bit version to run under VBox on the Samsung to see how they go. I'll try to do the clever stuff like keeping records & I'll report back.

Thanks for the tip about lxappearance, I'll try that and get back to you.

Oh yes, and I md5'd both downloads & they were good

I'm having the same issue...appearantly after having sampled all the available styles in fluxbox settings, and lxapprearance. Didn't find anything I liked better than the default, so went back to that. Now Terminal opens for a flash, and then closes. Same goes or the Video player. Don't know just what else doesn't work, but I have the feeling there is more. It just doesn't feel right.

Over the past few days I've tried changing styles by running lxappearance from the root terminal, but have not seen any change. For now, I've just been doing whatever needs to be done by using the root terminal, but I'm having some other quirkiness that is likely related, so would like to get this issue sorted.

Does anyone have any more ideas? Or, at least some suggestions on where to look to identify the cause of the problem?
