To save me uploading large iso files, I have uploaded 3 xdelta patches, for antiX-M11-686, antiX-M11-base and antiX-M11-core.

You need the 686 iso (s) from here:

========= SCRAPER REMOVED AN EMBEDDED LINK HERE ===========
url was:"http://www.mepisimo.com/antix/Released/"
linktext was:"http://www.mepisimo.com/antix/Released/"
====================================

and the correct patch from here:

========= SCRAPER REMOVED AN EMBEDDED LINK HERE ===========
url was:"http://www.mepisimo.com/antix/Testing/"
linktext was:"http://www.mepisimo.com/antix/Testing/"
====================================

Put them both in the same folder and then patch them with xdelta as shown here:

========= SCRAPER REMOVED AN EMBEDDED LINK HERE ===========
url was:"http://www.mepis.org/docs/en/index.php?title=Xdelta"
linktext was:"http://www.mepis.org/docs/en/index.php?title=Xdelta"
====================================

Make sure you have xdelta installed (don't use xdelta3)

The command will be something like this

Code: Select all

xdelta patch patchrc3 antiX-M11-686.iso antiX-M11-rc3-686.iso
Changes from previous iso.

* 2.6.36 MEPIS kernel
* inclusion of xorg-nv
* nouveau drivers should work.

Please test live or installed to see how well this kernel works, and the drivers.

If you have an nvidia card, you have 2 choices live.
1. Using nv driver. May work best for older cards.
2. Using default nouveau driver.

Other cards (ati/intel) should not be affected, but please let me know if there are issues.

If you want antiX to create an xorg.conf file, use the no cheats section and add you own cheats eg drvr=nouveau xres=1280x1024
or for nv you need drvr=nv xres=1280x1024 nomodeset

Added: If you install to run as liveusb, or fromiso or frugal, make sure you add aufs to the boot kernel line otherwise you'll get error messages.

Correct md5sum for patched images.

full = 2b7655dc2b9833adfd290523af08051d
base = 80a3035f57468e70d0f79be66d8b601d
core = c9e159bf618359213f42eeed4fece2ab

Added: I have also uploaded new iso files to usual place in Testing to save on patching.
rc4 comes with aufs enables so no need for the cheat.

anti, Alt+F2 toggles"occupy all workspaces" in icewm so better the run keyboard shortcut go back to 'Ctrl+Alt+r'.
Sorry for that.

Booted up on IBM M-41 Wireless Desktop running Live CD,

With all the bootup options. It took me a bit to figure out what would get me to a desktop on this rig.

Default top entry in grub splash screen= can't find AntiX file system ( I blame my CDRW drive or disk for this as things were flakey with this burner today. Dust maybe?)

cheats eg drvr=nouveau xres=1280x1024 gave me a can't find X error after startx in init 3. Old nvidea card problem maybe,

drvr=nv xres=1280x1024 nomodeset was the ticket to a desktop on this rig __{{emoticon}}__

I blew out my cdrw drive with a can of air to un-flake the flakiness I perceived with this drive. It is Windy here today and motorcycle shop is dusty. Used

Code: Select all

ifconfig -a
command to find wlan0 for wireless address for wicd and put in wicd>preferences>wireless interface. Have not touched anything else in wicd preferences and so far so good. Cool.

On this rig Anti. I will be deleting hdd6 (/) and hdd7 (/home) where AntiX 8.5 sits and merging the 2 partitions into one. Hope the Mepis installer sees my secondary IDE 60 gig drive when I point it to install.
No biggy fir I have backed up what I want off of AntiX 8.5 to hda5 which is a vfat fat32 storage partition (I can grab what I need from there later).

fdisk -l for just this secondary drive lists as

Code: Select all

/dev/sdb1   *           1         599     4811436   83  Linux
/dev/sdb2             600        1242     5164897+  83  Linux
/dev/sdb3            1243        7301    48668917+   5  Extended
/dev/sdb5            1243        2018     6233188+  83  Linux
/dev/sdb6            2019        4585    20619396   83  Linux
/dev/sdb7            4586        7160    20683656    b  W95 FAT32
/dev/sdb8            7161        7301     1132551   82  Linux swap / Solaris
sdb7 is the other fat32 partition for storage on this hardrive. I will be installing Antix 11 rc3 grub to root instead of mbr since I use grub4dos on this rig. Used to it by now. Backed up old /boot/grub/menu.lst in AntiX 8.5 just in case I need some info from it like (hdx,x). Off to the races, laterz. __{{emoticon}}__

OOOOOOOOOOPS. __{{emoticon}}__

Set up wireless in terminal as root:
iwconfig
ifconfig wlan0 up

Excellent!!

Used Ceni to configure. Tried Wicd and that didn't work. I like Ceni better anyway.

Wallpaper set up good. No problems.

I will install on lappy tonight or tomorrow.

I will have to try on my desktop. My desktop has a NVidia card. Had trouble with the livecd booting in the past with M11. I will have to use one of the cheat codes you suggested:
If you want antiX to create an xorg.conf file, use the no cheats section and add you own cheats eg drvr=nouveau xres=1280x1024
or for nv you need drvr=nv xres=1280x1024 nomodeset

Looking great here. Thanks anti. __{{emoticon}}__

btw: I really like the volume control icon on the bottom right"taskbar" next to the date and time.

Gonna modify menu.lst for grub4dos today because I am going to delete NOP and Bruno Puppy Linux today to free up some drive space. Will probably have to modify /etc/fstab again when done. No hiccups here so far Anti.

LiveCD works great on Compaq SR5610F desktop with Nvidia 6150 SE graphics card.

Used cheat code drvr=nv xres 1280x1024 nomodeset.
Added: I have also uploaded new iso files to usual place in Testing to save on patching.
rc4 comes with aufs enables so no need for the cheat.
If the only difference between rc4 and my patched rc3 is the above, I don't think I have any need to download the entire iso file that includes rc4.

Working good for me anti!!

No problems with RC4 with the old dell e1505 laptop. Wireless working fine. I've even got two-finger scroll on the touchpad, which doesn't work on winxp. here's the inxi -F

I was excited to see a menu entry for legacy nvidia drivers but no matter what I did I couldn't get a live boot, from that or any other menu selection.
Finally picked up on the nomodeset option and by adding:
drvr=nv nomodeset to the add cheats menu option I am now posting from live anitx RC4

Should there be an xorg entry in the Legacy nvidia boot menu option?

Hello:

Tested the livecd in a backup laptop I have, and it worked fine, as long as I booted with with noxorg vga=791,

Then installed it in the same laptop, and upon reboot, it just went to cli. I noticed the boot line had some things I did not recognize (some nouveau stuff), so I wiped out the boot line and just did noxorg vga=791 and the boot up was kind of ugly but at least X came up.

Here are the specs from the machine:

This is the first time that an AntiX install has not booted up well. What's different?

thanks

To answer Pedro's question.

It has to do with nouveau and KMS enebled in kernel. They don't play well, yet.

If user has a new nvidia card, then the nouveau driver should be used.
If user has an old nvidia card, then the nouveau driver should be disabled (it is enabled by default vis KMS in the kernel. Disabling nouveau needs the nomodeset option AND nouveau.modeset=0 (I think)) and the nv driver used. (BTW Debian Testing has removed the nv driver, so we had to install from a 3rd party source).
If user has a nvidia card user might also need to specify the vga rate for the screen irregardless of whether nouveau or nv driver is used.
If user wants antiX to set up xorg.conf, and therefore enable the cheatcodes xres= for screen resolution and drvr= to specify the driver, then another set of bootparameters are needed.

Clear as mud!
