Indeed, I share his sentiment(s) regarding factions engaged in"branding" and"user lock-in" agendas.
On my own, I had come 'round to thinking/believing the safe course forward is Gtk2 + Qt...
...but I've learned from experience across this past year that it's not an easy course to maintain.
At a glance, Qt sounds good, but far too many of the existing qt apps drag in KDE dependencies.
I tried, in earnest, to get kde to play well (under xfce) with gnome... and across 3 or 4 attempts, it did NOT end well.
With the first"purely" qt app one installs to a system, about 80Mb of dependencies come with it.
edit: not so (libqtgstreamer etc for many apps does result in big, chained dependencies though)
For me, that"first app" is recoll (file indexer).
I can't think of any other best-of-breed qt apps though, and I'm sure not willing to give up my gtk2-based fave apps.
zenity } gtkdialog } yad
Ah, and then there's"actionaz". That might push me over the edge, toward welcoming the presence of qt.
During first run, without reading any docs, I built an interesting"alarm clock" app.
(compared to my spending an entire day wrestling with yad just to tweak an ascii notekeeping util)
Anyhow, my point about zukitwo wasn't specific to spacefm. My point was that it (theme) seems to lack support for gkt3+
(vs"clearbird","bluebird" and a handful of other themes which currently support both gtk2 and gtk3)
and so I'm suggesting replacing zukitwo with a different theme in the next"final" antix release.
I had read that blog entry the same day he posted it.There is an issue with gtk3 and themes

I'll look for it. What's the URL for the deb-src repository where"install-meta-antix" source files reside?
the verbiage is probably pulled from .po files eh?That needs fixing when I figure how to do it

I found a ntfs winXP Core2 Duo box with 3 Gig ram to play with. Aha, a chance for me to try out the 64 bit version of antiX-12.5-full-alpha2-amd64. Also to see what the fuss is with linux distros needing lots of power. 3 Gig should be plenty to try say the newest mepis.
Hey, I am offering this machine for antiX testing. Glad to try anything you want. Sorry, where this machine lives I don't have a high-speed internet connection.
Got a live with persistence install on this Hard Disk working, no partitioning, no MBR fiddling, using grub4dos.
Changes from the Control Center to eg wallpaper, Startup Services or conky, and writing/saving this text in Lowriter carries over to the next bootup. Haven't tried installing new programmes yet. Rootfs is 3023 meg ext2, homefs is 8192 meg ext4 (why ext4? I don't think I chose that).
Hiccups:
Usually there is no response on trying a reboot or shutdown using the “Quit” button or “Logout” from the menu. But can do so using a halt command either from the 'Run' menu choice ie gexec or from a console ie Ctrl-Alt-F1. I say usually, because sometimes the reboot/shutdown from “Quit” or “Logout” works OK. Also, sometimes I get a freeze up on trying this, and can't get to the console or use the mouse, even need to unplug the machine to start over. But not always.
I understand that with persistence there is a final save to disk on a shutdown, so I wonder if I'm not waiting long enough. I had chosen the semi-automatic save-mode option and I'm not getting a"ask to save on shutdown/reboot”. I did run persist-config again. Inconsistent, so far.
Maybe I should add that this is one of those computers that do not boot right into the gui slim right away, but starts in a console. Typing slim as root starts up the gui. I don't mind that.

Install method:
I followed directions and copied the antiX and boot folders from the liveCD onto the XP C:
With grub4dos, I copied its grldr and its sample menu.list to the XP C:
Then modified boot(period)ini by adding: C: GRLDR="Start GRUB" (Put a backslash before GLDR)

Geez, I was just trying to be helpful.
I've scoured the forum, read and REread the documentation pages...
...and haven't been able to find a link to retrieve the source code for"install-meta-antix".
Is antix no longer an entirely"open source" project?

Here is the original source from sidux. (as you can see, deprecated)

The only changes have been in the changes to the .bm files in /usr/share/install-meta/

Installs and boots okay. There are 3 entries for Synaptic in fluxbox-->Applications-->Preferences instead of the normal two entries.
I have a question about testing new ISOs. Do you guys have a routine you go thru to evaluate a new alpha or beta? Do you go thru the control centre icons systematically or have a set of steps you use to look for bugs? I mean I install the ISO to a partition and start using it but I not"testing it" in a systematic sense. Also is posting info on my hardware helpful when I reply to this thread? I could use inxi with whatever options you would like and add the results to my replies but is that useful to anyone? I am not a programmer or an IT person so any guidance you could supply would be appreciated.

I've installed the core and base iso's. Both are having problems getting the screen size correct. The screen is too small at 1024x768. Things are a little blurry in spots and everything looks stretched. I tried booting into run level 3 and running
but got error messages about a hardware conflict (something about dual monitors but only one detected).
I think roky has a post somewhere about using xrandr to set the resolution. I'll try that next.
EDIT Using xrandr looked a little tricky so I shied away from it. I booted the livecd which detected my resolution at 1024x768, so I couldn't just copy the config file. Will try other livecds and copy a working config file. Hopefully that works.
EDIT Tried the advice in this post but no joy resolution-on-netbook-t4091.html#p27397
Then I tried installing kernel 3.6.9 but that didn't help either. Interestingly, the output of"inxi -F" shows I'm using kernel 3.6.6 and my video driver is"vesa" instead of the intel driver for my card. And that's weird since the intel driver was installed from the iso.
john
Code: Select all
#Xorg -configure

@ anticapitalista, Thanks for the new kernel with uvcvideo compiled in, my webcam now works. Quality is not great, but it's good enough for now.
The 3.6.9 kernel works, will retest with the 3.7.1.

Same again with 3.7.1.
ISO needs to have print-driver-gutenprint installed to give a larger group of printers. I think I originally only had 7 to choose from, when I installed the above package, the installation went smooth as silk.
I don't think I've found anything not already reported like certain menu entries not working, but just in case, the meta installer fails to load gimp-full.
When messing with the icewm themes, sometimes the background behind conky goes dark. Refreshing the wallpaper sorts it out, but I have not modified any graphics drivers or settings yet.
Hibernate does not work.
