Lots of new kernels for you to try for 486 and amd64 flavours.

Bleeding-edge 3.7.1 usual or gnu(libre)

3.6.9 usual or gnu(libre)

Those with old nvidia cards might have issues with 3.7.1 kernel. If so, use the 3.6.9 one.

Post comments here as we'll have to decide which version to use for next antiX release.

Just a quick and quite incomplete response.
The Bleeding-edge 3.7.1 usual has, I believe, cured the slim problem with my AMD-ati-radeon using computers. Ihe init5 boots right into the slim gui.
Desktop: IceWM 1.3.7 Distro: antiX-full-maintenance EdelweiƟpiraten 16 September 2012
Machine: System: IBM product: 23747FU version: ThinkPad T41
Mobo: IBM model: 23747FU Bios: IBM version: 1RET87WW (2.14 ) date: 01/26/2004
CPU: Single core Intel Pentium M (-UP-) cache: 1024 KB flags: (sse sse2) clocked at 600.00 MHz
Graphics: Card: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI RV200 [Mobility Radeon 7500]
X.Org: 1.12.4 drivers: ati,radeon (unloaded: fbdev,vesa) Resolution: 1024x768@60.0hz
GLX Renderer: N/A GLX Version: N/A

Also seems much faster bootup. Maybe should mention that this liitle box is apt-get updated/dist-upgraded to today.

Question: What is/are the difference(s) between the 'gnu' ad non-'gnu' versions? Hm, could be a really big answer, but how about just in general?

The gnu kernel has all the proprietary stuff stripped out. It is from fsfla.

========= SCRAPER REMOVED AN EMBEDDED LINK HERE ===========
url was:"http://www.fsfla.org/svnwiki/selibre/linux-libre/"
linktext was:"http://www.fsfla.org/svnwiki/selibre/linux-libre/"
====================================

So some hardware might not work ie sound cards, wifi etc.

The non-gnu kernel is fairlt 'free', but not enough bt the standards of the fsf

I've tried all of these kernels recently: 3.6.6, 3.6.9, 3.7.1. I've used the 3.6.6 kernel on three different hardware platforms: Gateway 2000 Series 17" portable, Lenovo 3000 Series Y410 laptop, and an old Dell Latitude D610. On the D610, I've also successfully used the 3.6.9 kernel. On the Gateway, I've tested the latest kernel and installed it yesterday.

All experiments and usage has worked out fine.

and my ISP is flaky because of that. Took me forever to wget the gnu kernel image and headrs after router hand resets by me. Everytning is working OK for me with the gnu kernel on this Laptop.

There are a new 3.7.1-antix3 and 2.6.9-antix3 kernels available with much better support for web cams.

I have a GeForce4 MX 440 AGP 8x and the 3.7.1 kernel gives errors when trying to install the nvidia driver, as do any later kernels.

I'm now running on the 3.6.9-antix.2-486-smp kernel. Should I try 3.6.9-antix.3-486-smp?

Alanarchy - do any later than 3.6.9 kernels work? There is a 3.6.11-antix.1 kernel in the repo.

Any 3.7, 3.8 antiX or Debian or siduction, aptsid, liquorix?

I may need to reconsider using 2.6.9 kernel as default for 32 bit.

Edit: I meant 3.6.9

I tried the 3.8 first, then the 3.7. Liquorix never allowed me to install the nvidia drivers on this computer, but on the other one, with the SIS chipset, Liquorix works fine.

I'll try the 3.6.11 now then. I just upgraded to unlimited broadband so I can keep trying stuff now. __{{emoticon}}__

Alanarchy - good, so the nvidia driver also works?

If you can, install a 3.7 or 3.8 kernel (for antiX I suggest 3.7.10.antix.2, 3.8.2-antix.1 or any Debian or liquorix kernel) and see if nvidia works. I need to decide a default kernel. If 3.7 series and above does not work with nvidia driver, we'll ship with 2.6.11

Edit: I mean 3.6.11

3.7.10.antix.2 and 3.8.2-antix.1 both give me an error about not finding the headers when I try to install nvidia.

Did you use smxi/sgfxi to try and install nvidia drivers?
