Could you test out the antiX kernel (and headers) from here:

========= SCRAPER REMOVED AN EMBEDDED LINK HERE ===========
url was:"http://www.mepisimo.com/antix/Testing/"
linktext was:"http://www.mepisimo.com/antix/Testing/"
====================================

Preferably for those using PI/k5/k6 boxes.

Post results and output of inxi -F

Note: To install.
Download the .debs to a folder
cd into that folder
in a root terminal type dpkg -i *.deb then
update-grub

I don't have any P1 or P2 boxes anymore to test with. I will try next update-grub and see if I get a menu entry in grub screen and if so. If it boots or not.

Rebooted. Kernel shows in grub screen. Selected and hit enter. Booted as far as populating udev and getting to the power button line. Then it froze on me there. Had to use manual power button to shutdown. Ctrl+Alt+Del would not shut it down or reboot it.

Tried init-3 boot next with new kernel to just double check. Same ending at udev and power button. I looked in /var/log/boot text file but it only shows my liqourix 2.6.38 success full boot message. If anyone knows where I can find the new kernels boot log. I am all ears and will update post to show the whole deal.

Just the two .deb files, linux-headers-etx, and linux-image-etc?
Will track down and rev up my P200MXX and a K6.
Using antiX-M11 full, default install from CD, or would you prefer using the antiX-test iso?
Gimme a day or two.
Anything else?

Thanks so far for the feedback.
I should have mentioned that this is the first time antiX has tried with its own kernel.
It might be better to install the headers file without dkms installed.

If that doesn't make any difference, remove the headers and see if the kernel works ok or not.

Also you might (will) need to install cpp-4.6, gcc-4.6 and gcc-4.6-base

How long did you wait? There is a default 2 minute timeout for trying to populate udev.

I've attached a gzipped udev to replace /etc/init.d/udev which changes the timeout to 15 seconds in case you can't stand waiting 2 minutes. My guess is that your system really is frozen and waiting two minutes or using the 15 second timeout won't make a difference, but it might be worth a shot anyway.

I'd be interested in seeing the output of"lspci -vk" for your system that does not boot the new kernel.

I'd also suggest you try anti's suggestions first if they apply to you.

During this step kernel modules are getting loaded that are needed to talk to your hardware. I imagine there may be a problem with one of these modules that is causing the kernel to freeze.

Re-downloaded just the kernel image (left the header there alone) and installed again with dpkg -i. Just in case I got a corrupted download since no md5sum is there in testing for these files.

Updated grub and rebooted. This time I went and got my camera to take pictures of the screen so you can see what is up since I can't find a log file for the new kernel.

grub shot.

This is 1st boot with new kernel. Where it got stuck was Power Button. I waited probably 8 minutes or more to see if timeout would kick in. CPU fan was running full blast the whole time. Hard Shutdown with Power Button required to shut her down.

2ndboot got 2 lines further (surprised me) . Since pic is a little clearer. You can see better where 1st boot stopped about 2 lines up from speaker. Waited about 10 minutes on that line to go away BitJam before doing a hard shutdown.

That is it for me for testing tonight. Happy Trails, Rok

Ok. I uninstalled dkms just now.

Code: Select all

harry@biker:~$ apt-cache policy dkms
dkms:

If nidiswrapper is all dkms is used for. Like you Anti. I have no need for it/dkms.

I will download the headers again and install see what is up. I am beat/tired. THE HOLIDAYS ARE KILLING ME. __{{emoticon}}__

If I sound confused at times or I misinterpret replies. You'll at least know why.

Edit: That looks better

__{{emoticon}}__ Reboot time.

Edit: No joy with changes applied. Still locking up on boot like in 1stboot screenshot in my above post. I gave it plenty of time also. I edited my above earlier post with a better camera shot for 1stboot screen also.

Had a tiny scare also. My Wireless mouse quite working with LIQOURIX kernel when I booted into it. I rebooted into stock Mepis kernel for AntiX11 and am posting now in it. Maybe just a hiccup. Don't know yet.
It had me wondering if uninstalling dkms somehow screwed the pooch with the mouse. I guess not though since it works with my backup kernel.

Last Edit: Yeah, just a burp/hiccup. This dumpster machine can screw with ones mind. Wireless Mouse is working again in Liqourix.

@roky, if you have a /etc/udev/udev.conf file, you can edit it changing:

Code: Select all

udev_log="err"
to either

Code: Select all

udev_log="info"
or

Code: Select all

udev_log="debug"
Unfortunately, on my system either one of these causes a metric truckload of information to scroll rapidly off the screen. In a perfect world, the name of the module that is causes your system to hang would be left on the screen when you system freezes. I would suggest you boot with the vga=ask option and select the highest resolution your hardware supports to make it slightly more likely that useful information will be left on the screen.

I could also provide you with a simple udev /etc/init.d script that merely prints the name of each module before loading it. The goal in all of this would be to track down your problem to a specific module or modules that you could blacklist and then be able to boot. Another approach would be to start by blacklisting all non-essential modules and see if that allows you to boot.

Followed anti's instructions at top of this thread and install worked just fine on my
P200MMX. Also all the grub choices for booting (old/new kernel, etc).
Note this is an antiX NOT updated/upgraded from the default May1/11 install, with only a few extras like thunar and xfe added at that time. Tried a (tested and working) wireless usb adapter, using the windows drivers, but got an error message about whether the ndiswrapper module is
installed, and well no go. Edit: the wireless is no go, everyting else seems fine.
