topic title: Is 7.2 the latest stable release, or is 7.01?

I am using Ubuntu Hardy and would like to try a good, small OS for comparison as my laptop is older (celeron 433 mhz, Ram 256). I was about to download the 7.01 because it says on the website that the is the latest stable release. But now I see that the final version of 7.2 has been released four days ago. So is that the one to get? I am not a tester, but a user. I'd like a version is the best you've got, and ready to go.

Yes, 7.2 is the latest stable release (it was actually just released a few days ago).

7.2 is ready to roll. You'll love it. 2 Versions. One called antiX-M7.2 VETËVENDOSJE is the full version antiX. The other is a base version. A 3rd version, antiX-kdelite has not yet been updated to 7.2.

So for a regular user like me, I suppose the full version is what I want, right? Or are there benefits to the base version? What are the differences?
I'm someone who will be doing mostly wordprocessing, email, and web-browsing. I'd also like to be able to install the KDE database utility"Kexi" on it. Will that work?
Lastly: In Ubuntu there is a utility for inputting other languages called SCIM. It is for Eastern European, Arabic, and Indian languages mostly. Does anyone know, will that run in AntiX?

This is a list of packages in both antiX 7.2. They both have the same base.
Hope this helps. Try them both, they are Live CD's.

Here is a link to a list of all apps in the recently released antiX-M7.2 - VETËVENDOSJE! series.

It would be entirely up to you. The base version is just that"basic"Very few apps installed so the user can install what they wish. The full version comes with Abiword for word processing but you could install what ever you like, even kexi and scim.

The basic speed, and memory demands of both would be the same I guess, right?

Yes, pretty much. One thing you would miss on the base is the Antix CC(control center). I don't think it's on the base. Great piece of work to.

Swarup, It is possible to get scim working in antiX, but it requires downloading the scim packages and your language and font packages and manually editing one or two configuration files. I am unfortunately not on an antiX box right now, so I can't tell you what I had to edit to get it working.
You might be able to find a solution by doing a web search for"scim" and"fluxbox".
I'll be able to send more detailed instructions in a few days.

One thing I should add here: on my other HD where I have Ubuntu and Xubuntu, I have recently added Fluxbox as a separate session there. When I login under Fluxbox, everything I have in Ubuntu ports over automatically into Fluxbox. Including my SCIM and all the language and font packages. So I can type now in Hindi in Fluxbox no problem. But maybe that's just because I have Ubuntu on the same HD with everything set up, so Fluxbox was able to just borrow everything. Whereas in AntiX, there isn't going to be any other distro on the HD to borrow it from. So I'll be having to set it up from scratch.
I'll do a search, but please kindly do send the instructions, I'll definitely be needing to do this. I am looking at making AntiX my main working distro if it runs a good bit faster than my current one (Ubuntu Hardy) and can do everything I need for my daily work.contents wrote:Swarup, It is possible to get scim working in antiX, but it requires downloading the scim packages and your language and font packages and manually editing one or two configuration files. All you did was install a window manager. All the apps an configuration is still Ubuntu. I have never used scim and couldn't tell you how to set it up but I'm positive you're not the first person to set it up under fluxbox so a Google search and some docs should clear that up.One thing I should add here: on my other HD where I have Ubuntu and Xubuntu, I have recently added Fluxbox as a separate session there. I've just been searching, and found 1-2 potentially useful guides for setting up SCIM on MEPIS 6. I see that AntiX is a Mepis derivative, so perhaps it will apply to AntiX as well. That's about as close as I got.eriefisher wrote:I have never used scim and couldn't tell you how to set it up but I'm positive you're not the first person to set it up under fluxbox so a Google search and some docs should clear that up.

The sidux forum has some good info. Just adjust the language to Hindi.

So is the take-home message here that I can view AntiX as being a member of the Debian family, and in future if I need to research something then if I can find a solution for Debian systems there is a good chance it may work for AntiX. Correct approach?
Thanks for the great link. I looked into this, and found that Sidux is Debian-based. I knew AntiX was derived from Mepis, and now I see that Mepiis itself is Debain-based. So we're dealing all within the same family of Debian. The link you gave basically shows that SCIM and m17n (a related and needed subutility in SCIM) both are straightforward Debian installs. That's great news!anticapitalista wrote:The sidux forum has some good info. Just adjust the language to Hindi.

Yes, correct approach.
antiX is really Debian Testing plus some Etch, using a MEPIS kernel and MEPIS tools. If you look in synaptic, you'll see very few apps from MEPIS.
