Hopefully most of the bugs found in a2 have been fixed.

This version ships with:

* 4.10.5 kernel
* virtualbox guest modules (which seem to be broken).
* qt5ct for setting qt themes (problematic)
* User manager (needs testing, parts are almost certainly broken).
* apt sources includes onion.list for use with tor (not included)
* advert block hosts file updated
* apt-transport-https included
* new default wallpaper and login background
* icewm themes extended
* no qt4 apps wpasupplicant inbuilt to use qt5
* env-info (neofetch for old hardware!)
* wicd enabled but not added to taskbar since it adds c20MB RAM
* live-usb-maker has encryption option (work in progress and only for the cli version at the moment)

Known issues:

* Live boot in Virtualbox seems to break the consoles so on boot you do not see the final set of text, and on reboot/halt, you do not see the eject cd message. Just wait 5 secs or so and press Enter.
You may ask why include it if it is broken. To see if it is indeed broken for all and to see if someone out there knows why and has a fix.
* Qt5 theming seems to be pretty random/broken (upstream).
* IceWM theme switching /conky readout blurred as on a2. Can't find a fix for this. Just turn off conky in the menu and turn it back on again to remove the blur.

Get the iso or delta patch a2-a3 from here:

BTW - Stretch is still 'rolling' despite the 'freeze'.

iso copied to pendrive using Rufus

Persistence setup (requested via bootmenu) did not prompt for password change.
Is this a regression, or is now the intended behavior?

After setting up persistence, successful save was (correctly) reported during shutdown.
During next boot, upon pressing Enter key to boot, the bootmenu screen raised a dialog box stating
"(titlebar text) Bootloader
(msg text) /antiX/vmlinux not found"
I've never previously seen such a msg & didn't even realize the bootmenu is capable of showing popup errorboxes.
Following poweroff/on and retry, the error has not repeated. I'm stumped what may have triggered it.

Rufus? - Maybe not as I just saw the same (no password prompt) in VBox with persistence.

session logout dialog includes a"Hibernate" button. Is that (now) expected to work?
If not, can the button be disabled/hidden?

---
Control Center }} Disks
(cosmetic issue) the icon images in left column look scaled/stretched/blurry

---
Neglected to report earlier -- luckyBackup worked for the few test jobs I setup and ran.

---
Contrary to the release notes, conky now seems fine when switching between window manager sessions.

A3 working on Thinkpad T43p. (still not installing on x60t, see A2 thread on this).

Date and Time Zone had to be set manually in Control Centre as it didn't do the Time Zone specified in the install.

Putting an Audio CD in the drive doesn't auto-mount (I'm using space-icewm, as per one of Dolphin Oracle's earlier videos) I get this error pop-up:

Code: Select all

Errors
Run Mount /dev/sr0
Status: Finished with error ( exit status 32 )
udevil: /dev/sr0 is known to mount -running mount as current user
udevil: warning 45: options ignored for device in fstab (or specify mount point)
mount: /dev/sr0: can't read superblock
Meta-Package Installer:

- Office: Adobe Acrobat Reader isn't included anymore.

- Video: VLC still not included, seems like an oversight.

- Google Chrome is still here, I thought 32-bit was discontinued, is it back or is this just a place-holder for 64-bit?

- I'd still like to see a Font Manager option like the good old Adobe Type Manager.

- I'd like to see a section for Tablets, I was able to figure out to install adding x-server-xorg-input-wacom libwacom2 and xournal from synaptic to be able to use pen (in earlier iterations, can't try this until I can get it to install on x60t) but having something to show people that AntiX can work with pens would be good.

- it would be nice to have a section for Command Line / Terminal applications, sort of a"best of". Yes, they can be installed from terminal but how would one (who's a CLI newbie like me) even know what they were to try them, the MetaPackage installer is really nice for being able to explore new programs and it's already a sort of"best of" list. e.g., Dolphin Oracle mentioned"cdw" in one of his videos (I think), I saw something somewhere on w3m, stuff like that. This would be especially useful on really old hardware, like my old 19-year-old 266MHz Toshiba Tecra 780dvd which is slow with the graphical programs but could still do some good stuff with the terminal apps and get more life out of older hardware, and isn't that part of what AntiX is about? The developers must have some great favourites of these that us newer Linux guys might like to try and this seems the place to do it and not let GUI have all the fun __{{emoticon}}__

Control Centre -> Drivers doesn't have an ATI option (mines is working out-of-the-box), maybe I'm mis-remembering (or mixing it up with MX), but I thought it was in there before.

In the installation process it would be nice if there was a custom install option where you could decide what parts to put in, which wm, which applications, etc., a check-box kinda thing that you could choose to go into or not (like the services button at install), or have all of these things in the Meta-Package installer (maybe with install green checkmark box and uninstall red ex box kinda thing) then you could just customize your installation from there.

audio CD's don't mount. unlike DVD's, they aren't supposed to. I'm surprised udevil even tries.

fglrx is discontinued in the"stretch" era. the open source amdgpu drivers are including OOTB.

* Qt5 theming seems to be pretty random/broken (upstream).
Is there a particular app that shows the problems with qt5 themeing?

qt5ct is installed on the iso and if you run it as user it should make qt5 apps follow the user gtk2 theme set by lxappearance (note there are no qt4 apps on a3). Problems begin with running apps that need sudo. They do not follow the theme if you change it.

Used UNetbootin in Antix 16 to make the USB stick, boot to it and as statede Conky was hard to read, opened and used WICD . Dang conky had straighten out. Looked good.
Installed to hdd and booted to it. Had to close and reopen conky in oreder to read it. Wonder if a slight delay on start up may help that situation.

When conky is"hard to read", check htop. I suspect you'll find multiple conky instances are running.
qt5ct is installed
Months ago when we looked at this, I had made a note
manual followup is required, post-installation. Need to add a line to ~/.profile
export QT_QPA_PLATFORMTHEME=qt5ct

In the months since, I thought I'd read a changelog indicating that the dpkg installer now takes care of this.
However, I found no such line ~/.profile (nor /etc/skel/.profile)

I'll skip extended discussion regarding general test cases which will still fail,
but the following should handle the immediate goal of launching correctly-skinned luckybackup, from ControlCenter:

1) add a line export QT_QPA_PLATFORMTHEME=qt5ct[/quote] to ~/.profile
(in the build, this will need to be present within /etc/skel/.profile)

2) logout/login so that your edited .profile will be loaded

3) launch a (lxterminal)"root terminal" and verify the QT_blahblah env variable is set

4) from that terminal prompt, command gksu -k qt5ct
and choose, e.g., the black skin... apply, OK, exit qt5ct

5) edit /usr/local/bin/antixcc.sh
revise the launchstring within to read:
"gksu -k luckybackup &"

6) visit ControlCenter }} Maintenance }}"Backup Your System"
and verify that luckybackup launches with black skin

Better than Antix17a2 which woudn't boot (didn't know about cheat code then)

Tried to use control center app in Antix16 to make flashdrive, but for some strange reason it didn't copy the iso to the flashdrive.

Machine is Dell Inspiron 15 i7559 and nVidia GTX 960 3840x2160 video

Made flashdrive from Windows via Rufus, and that worked, and booted.

Tried to use boot cheat code acpi_osi='!Windows 2015' but the boot separates it into 2 parameters and complains about the" 2015'" part (double quotes added for clarity to show the leading space)

boots with cheat code acpi_osi=! acpi_osi=Windows

Control center says invalid password trying to change screen resolution

run terminal, the su the root to get #, then run arandr successfully to change resolution to 1440x900 so magnifier not needed to read

logout, then restart session to reset screen, works ok

If I run Web Browser the machine semi locks up and firefox never comes up. ps -ef in su terminal shows it running. if instead I run firefox from terminal command line it does work. Dillo works from command line too. Htop showed CPU #5 at 100% but couldn't see any high cpu tasks.

Scroll bars don't work right in firefox. They don't move you one page at a time when you click on the bar.

Window border on lxterminal is invisible. Can't grab the edge via mouse to resize the window. Changing to different theme icenoir helped with window edge, but get apple logo menu and all window buttons look the same. None of the themes provided have rollup window option, like bluemetal has.

Gparted is missing from the menu. Its always nice to use gparted before installing to HD to make sure where I'm installing to.

Suspend doesn't work. Will try cheatcode i915.preliminary_hw_support=1 on next reboot.

qt5ct is installed on the iso and if you run it as user it should make qt5 apps follow the user gtk2 theme set by lxappearance
I'm seeing confusingly inconsistent results.
For testing, I've installed"recoll" (utilizes QT5) and"kdiff3-qt" (utilizes QT4)
launched"lxappearance" and chose"arc dark"
launched"gksu lxappearance" and chose"nox"
launched"qt5ct" and chose"yucky blue" ( FWIW, in my testing, I didn't choose"follow the user gtk2 theme" )
launched"gksu -k qt5ct" and chose"black"

non-priviledged launch of QT4 apps receive the arc dark gtk theme
non-priviledged launch of QT5 apps receive the yucky blue skin

priviledged launch of QT5 apps:
launched with"gksu -k" from terminal commandline receive the black skin
launched with"gksu" from terminal commandline receive generic gray theming
launched via gexec Alt+F2 box (and checkmark"root") receive generic gray theming

^---- results futher differ when launched from"root terminal" commandline ---v
"luckybackup" vs"gksu luckybackup" vs"gksu -k luckybackup"

FWIW, I retested after running `gksu-properties` and changing mode from"su" to"sudo".
Doing so didn't change the result for QT apps launched via the gexec runbox.

Tried to use control center app in Antix16 to make flashdrive,
but for some strange reason it didn't copy the iso to the flashdrive.
WHICH control center app?
In a previous step, did you successfully generate an iso?
An error message should have displayed on the screen, or should be present in a logfile.
Tried to use boot cheat code acpi_osi='!Windows 2015'
I've never heard of that boot parameter; I have no idea what it supposedly is/does.
Control center says invalid password trying to change screen resolution
CapsLock on? FWIW, I couldn't replicate that problem.
If I run Web Browser
In my testing,"Web browser" from menu launches firefox. No problems.
Scroll bars don't work right in firefox. They don't move you one page at a time when you click on the bar.
That might be beyond the control of the antiX devs.
visit about:config and filter on"scrollbar" (and separately, on"smoothscroll").
If you can identify which preference should be tweaked, maybe the devs can provide an overriding default in
/usr/share/firefox-esr/distribution/distribution.ini

...or maybe the scrollbar behavior is hardcoded in scrollbar properties coded within the GTK theme?
Try switching to a different GTK theme, then retest.
Also, IIRC there's a firefox pref controlling whether to inherit, or ignore, the OS desktop theme.
Window border on lxterminal is invisible. Can't grab the edge via mouse to resize the window. Changing to different theme icenoir helped with window edge, but get apple logo menu and all window buttons look the same. None of the themes provided have rollup window option, like bluemetal has.
I agree that the window edge of the default iceWM theme is hard to grab.
TIP: (rollup) regardless of iceWM theme, when you right-click a window's titlebar... Tada!
TIP: in both iceWM and in fluxbox, you can Alt+ hold RightMouseButton and drag to resize a window
Gparted is missing from the menu.
Previously, someone (or several people) criticized the redundancy of displaying"stuffs" both in the menu and in the ControlCenter... so we've arrived at the status quo: Gparted (and luckyBackemup) are suppressed from menu b/c they are available via ControlCenter.

conky
I thought d_o created a patch that solved this, months ago. Maybe the change(s) never got merged?

/etc/skel/.desktop-session/desktop-session.conf
and elsewhere, the session startup should test `pgrep -al conky` and not start conky if an instance is already running.

Each of the files:
/etc/skel/.icewm/startup
/etc/skel/.jwm/startup
/etc/skel/.fluxbox/startup
should similarly test, and should include an inline comment, advising the user that
other autostarted items they choose to add may beg use of a similar test wrapper.
Essentially, any program which does not refuse to start if another instance of itself is already running
begs use of a test/conditional wrapper clause.
