This is a very basic iso at around 100MB.

No X
No graphical apps
No firmware
cli-installer (Thanks to Burt)
Best for those with ethernet connection.
sudo is installed and configured so user can halt/reboot. ie sudo reboot.

Please test the cli-installer. It won't add existing OS to grub menu, but it should install ok.
The MEPIS repos are commented out and I have made changes to /etc/apt/apt.conf and /etc/apt/preferences.
If you want to use the existing kernel and add drivers via smxi/sgfxi (once xorg is installed), make sure the MEPIS 8.0 repo is enabled to get the necessary headers and linux-kbuild from the MEPIS repo. Otherwise it will fail.

liquorix repos are enabled for a liquorix kernel (686 only). Please test installing the liqurix kernel and headers and drivers for any possible errors. Same with Debian kernels.

If you want X after install, you will need at least 750MB space. The best way to get X is

# apt-get update
# apt-get install xorg

Add your favourite desktop environment or window manager and apps you need.

# apt-get install fluxbox leafpad conky feh scrot sux ntpdate slim rox-filer --no-install-recommends

Give me some time and I will download and burn the Iso and test on my Broken Amrel Laptops. One has broken mousepad where I use a finger mouse as a replacement with a USB to PS2 adapter to connect up to the laptop.

The one I'll test with is a 800mhz, 256mb ram, large Hardrive (can't remember what I have for spare yet) and I will see if I can dig up a pcmcia card somewhere to test ether net on it.

I sold my 2 other older Laptops and I think I included the PCMCIA 10/100 Cardbuses with them to the buyers. I will need to buy another. I don't think the one USB 1.1 port would connect up the Laptop to the router. Will try again though.

Like I said. Give me some time to break out and assemble this stuff. Everything is put away right now. Will be coming back to this thread and reading original post over and over again for reference. Happy Trails, Rok

I'll upload a 686 iso as well as the 486 one may not work properly fromiso (complains about aufs).

I installed it (the 486 one) in VB last night and even updated it to sidux repos. It worked very well and fast considering my CPU is quite weak. I have a circa 800 MB partition that I may use to test it in the HD.

, called grub2-fll-fromiso. They ship a custom file already set up in /etc/grub.d and if I understood well from passing my eyes over it this package adds just another file so the user sets his/hers preffered configuration and then it automatically adds sidux iso files that are put in a certain predetermined location to GRUB's menu. I'm thinking of trying to set up that here to see if it works fine (I use GRUB2 from my sid system).
Then if/when antiX adopts GRUB2 it could have a similar setup.

Regarding that hardware clock thing, I checked my BIOS and it's set to local time even using almost exclusively antiX and Debian. So maybe setting up UTC=no is a good idea and perhaps it would solve the issue of the live cd changing the hardware clock when booting off-line.

As I said, I have a quite small partition to test it on but say what kind of things you got in mind for us to test.

Just going to edit this post on what I did.

Followed Anti's instructions on i486 post but used i686 core distro.

My certain installed apps were wicd 1.70, XFE file manager, synaptic (for package search function mostly), fluxbox desktop, evilvte terminal emulator, conky, feh, pcmanfm (yeah I went nuts installing file manangers __{{emoticon}}__ ), fileroller, rox did pull in Iceweasel like you said Anti.

XFE pulled in Audacious for info. 111mb download that was.

For a novice. Shutdown laptop is done by me by opening root terminal or logging into one of the terminals as root. type in

shutdown -h now

And the laptop shuts down.

This is all running on a Amrel RT 686 EX Rocky II Laptop. Using this as a testbed for core Isos. Will test out Liquorix Kernels now that I have a working Desktop. So far so good Anti. __{{emoticon}}__

Update 6-27-10: Installed LXDE Desktop.Slim calls it default. Fluxbox option does not show in Slim F1.

roky, you can use 'sudo halt' to shutdown and 'sudo reboot' to reboot as a normal user since they are already set up in /etc/sudoers.

I tried sudo shutdown -h now secipolla and when prompted for password. My root user password would not be accepted. Tried using the word"root" and"demo" also with no joy. Hence shutting down logged in as root in terminal instead of using sudo. I read Antis notes on sudo being enabled. Don't know where I am screwing up yet. I am not on the testing laptop right now to check

"sudo halt"

But since it won't take a password from me. It probably won't work either.

Update 6-27-10: you are right secipola. sudo halt and sudo reboot do work in my install. Biker screws up again __{{emoticon}}__

I haven't gone into sudoers file yet to see what is going on yet. I got smxi hasn't been updated in 300 days error also when trying to run smxi also. Gotta look thru /var logs to see what is going on with that also. Don't know if my flaky connection problems might be to blame yet for some of my issues. Still Plodding along. Baby steps. __{{emoticon}}__

Well. I've grabbed the image; now to see what I can do with it. I've been experimenting this weekend with my own flavors of antiX. I've run LXDE and XFCE so far this evening. I have been using the fine tool that h2 created, smxi, as my springboard for testing a wide variety of environments. On top of all of that, I've recently added the Web based application from Mozilla Labs, Prism, which we've recently started to see in other experimental distributions. I have been having a good time experimenting, to say the least. Hopefully I will get to actually test out this really core image very soon. I've let one group of testers know about it; maybe I can attract a few inquisitive individuals who can give us some creative feedback.

i tried the 686 version and it gives an aufs error and stalls on loading. i tried it with the liveusb. i'll go again when i get a hold on a black cd-r.

I'm very happy with my experience so far. My initial screen resolution was too low (640x400) because the correct driver was not loaded. So I copied an xorg.conf created by a live-cd (antix7.5) and that worked great. I installed both fluxbox and dwm.

I installed dwm from debian repository, and I'm having the same problem as with dwm in full Antix 8.5. I don't have full keyboard control of dwm (eg. to generate a new xterm or to quit dwm). I had to download dwm from the homepage and compile dwm in my work laptop in order to configure the settings.

I tried doing that with the antix core build and I'm running into problems with make. I think it may have to do with dwm looking for X11R6/include and possible other X11R6. There is no X11R6 in antix. I remember that I had to load X11R6 in my work laptop, but I forget how I managed to do it. I can't find the package in the regular repos (using synaptic). Any suggestions?

I installed it to the hard-drive. I was intending to build a ROX-Desktop via the zeroinstall injector but then I saw that I would have to install the Debian package for ROX-Filer with all its dependencies and also I don't know how I would be able to make OroboROX window manager the default wm etc. so I eventually just installed xdm, jwm and Swiftfox.

I did install liquorix 2.6.32-12, nothing against the MEPIS kernel which always worked very well in this simple hardware setup of mine, but since I would rather stay clear from the MEPIS repos and the core already didn't have the other kernel related packages that was the way to go, I thought.

Changed to 'UTF=no' in /etc/default/rcS and installed ntp. Maybe both things should come as default?

Also, I know that console-setup is a not so tiny package but I had to install it for the keyboard map to work in the console. In my case I installed console-setup-mini, which works only with UTF-8 locales (not the legacy ones).

When I set the nouveau driver in xorg.conf X wouldn't load so I'm using nv. I had purged the other xorg video drivers besides those two (and vesa).

While this system is small (and it'll have to keep small in this tiny partition) maybe I try the remaster.sh script.

All in all this is very useful, works fine and is easy.

-edit: anti, you may edit your first post. I know those apps are just suggestions but for rox-filer (as for any other file manager) it would be best to recommend a separate installation with the --no-install-recommends option.

-edit2: I copied the cli-installer from the live-cd so I may translated it to Portuguese.
