We are almost there!

32 and 64 bit iso files of the 'full' version are available for further testing.

* NOTE!

* wicd wireless option in F4 of live boot menu. Wicd is tuned OFF by default.

As well as checking that all works as expected on an installed system,
we would also like feedback on the following, in particular.

Live-usb testing for antiX-17-rc1

    Console Fonts
    -------------
Console fonts (should never be less than 80 characters across)
If kernel VGA menu appears are you asked if you want to save?
Is the proper vga resolution always saved with"F8 Save"?

    Mount and Automount
    -------------------
Mount all partitions or usb partitions at boot-time with cheats:
"mount=<off|usb|all>"  This should be sticky on live-usb.

    Alternative (non-X) automount with"fstab=<auto|hotplug|test>"
        auto    = auto mount partitions
test    = control automounting with the cheats:
                 "automount" and"noautomount".
hotplug = add fstab entries and /media directories but
                  don't automatically mount

    Frugal and Save
    ---------------
Does frugal + persistence + save + toram, etc all still work?
Does"F8 Save" work on frugal install?
Does"Save these options" work with uefi boot?  On frugal?

    Xorg configuration
    ------------------
Experimental:"xorg=x" cheat uses xorg.conf created by
"X -configure".  This causes X to not start in Virtual Box.
Does it work on your real hardware?

    Splash-Select
    -------------
In the console, splash-select let's you select a different
background image.  There is now an edit feature that lets you
easily edit the theme file for your current splash theme.
Normally you would edit the values for: tx=, ty=, tw=, and
th= to change the text area.  These variables correspond
to: the left margin, the top margin, the width of the
text area, and the height of the text area.

    Networking
    ----------
Are there any lingering problems with networking?

Does the network"hotplug" if the ethernet cable is unplugged
and plugged back in?  There is a delay before the interface
    is brought down.  Use"ifconfig"

Does the wifi interface"hotplug" if you are able to turn
your wifi hardware on and off (some laptops let you do this).

    Live shutdown
    -------------
If you notice delays at live shutdown, you can start using
either"pause" or"db+" to pause at the end of shutdown so
you can note down error messages.

Known issues:

* Documentation is out of date.

Enjoy!

The ISO boots OK on a 64bit AMD machine.
Live-USB-Maker works.
A strange behaviour when you change the WM from the main menu: Evince gets closed, IceWM gets"Alpha" and"Beta" as workspace labels.
Will test on my Intel Atom netbook when it is available (it is compiling a browser).
Will report in more informative way when I have time soon.

PS: Can you put this topic in the Announcements category. It is under Topics at the moment and not clearly visible.

I wasn't using evince, but noticed that"quirk" & mentioned it in a post last night.
Because I couldn't identify any specific, recently-introduced, quirk in antiX17 icewm, I just described the quirkiness as a potential"known issue".

Does the network"hotplug" if the ethernet cable is unplugged and plugged back in?
There is a delay before the interface is brought down.  Use"ifconfig"
not sure where/why a"delay" is mentioned.
Unplug or replug ethernet cable --} change is immediately reflected in conky output, accompanied by an audible beep
(i like the beep)
"xorg=x" cheat uses xorg.conf created by"X -configure".  This causes X to not start in Virtual Box.
Does it work on your real hardware?
Well, adding that cheatcode didn't break anything (is that good? bad? I haven't noticed that it has any effect)
If kernel VGA menu appears are you asked if you want to save?
Is the proper vga resolution always saved with"F8 Save"?
note: i haven't yet thoroughly tested"F8 save is always successful"

During live boot, subsequent to having chosen via kernel VGA menu...
no, not prompted to save (an observation, in response to your question; I'm not reporting this as a bug).
Noticed these lines within linitrd.log FWIW

Code: Select all

Initializing random number generator ...
It appears you selected VGA resolution 1280,1024
Saving random seed
tested:
choose F7"ask+save" and leave F8 ask=off
at the"kernel VGA menu" screen, choose 800x600
result:
no new prompt following the"kernel VGA menu" screen but (output shows a"repack cpio files" line and) upon next boot we find"800x600" is shown as the (pre)selected F7 option

^------ so, seems correct... but seems meaningless/ignored on my machine.
(I would need to supply"nomodeset" cheatcode for that VGA setting to be applicable?)
Same as with previous ax17 betas, 3 seconds or so into init... as soon as KMS kicks in, the console huge fontface is shown.

Running on live-USB 3.0 device.  no problems so far.  1366x768 screen, console fonts look ok.

network connectivity is stable.  no problems on boot or reboot.

I ran xorg=x and yes, a /etc/X11/xorg.conf file was generated.  had entries for my monitor, input devices, and the intel video driver.  However, if the cheat is not used, modesetting is the default driver.

save these options from the uefi menu appears to work.  Using it now.

this is with my lenovo s21e.

regarding console fontface, I'll rehash what I had earlier described as bug/unexpected:

Regardless what I might do/select, 3 seconds into live boot, console font changes to 22x16.
I read that we must use console-font-select"to change it", and I did so.

The perceived-as-a-bug/problem:
choice made via console-font-select is not sticky ~~ not across boots, not even across consoles.
I had expected that each time I entered a different console, login would lookup and apply that previously chosen font as the default.

Per man console-font-select, passing size param as commandline arg is not supported.
If it were, we (i) could call it from within ~/.profile to preclude the recurring chore of choosing preferred console font size.

ControlCenter --} Live --}"Edit Exclude files"

oops, it now opens an empty geany window (a regression, compared to previous testing)

spacefm desktop on live does not have an installer icon on desktop.  It is present on the menu.

Controlcenter->Live->edit boot loader menu also opens blank.

Remaster options selection screen runs off the bottom of my 1366x768 monitor (see screenshot).   (the remaster itself went thru just fine BTW)

live-remaster provides a CANCEL button.
If this button is clicked, we are asked"really quit midway"?
Answering"yes" leads to a runaway squashfs process...

Answering"no" produces an additional dialogbox, but also leads to a runaway squashfs process

I'm testing now on my Intel Atom N270 netbook.
I don't know why I missed the encrypted liveUSB option during creation?

I left everithing default at the boot menu, I get the VGA menu and after selecting the right resolution I get asked in antiX styled console if I want"to save this resolution for subsequent boots".
I have no issues with huge console font anymore!

toram + persist_all + save work. I don't know what frugal means therefore I will not try, yet.
Edit: I need to test frugal on my UEFI machine.

I works, xorg.conf gets created, but it worked theis time (unlike with beta3) from begin on for me without it and I got the right resolution with default settings.

If I turn off my WiFi with keyboard Fn key I will need to go to BIOS, therefore I wont try. Ehternet plug and unplug works.

No delays.

@BitJam, to properly quote here on the new forum, you need to switch to"View Source" mode in the edit window (three dots or Ctrl+Shift+s).

automount option at live boot menu gives about ten lines with the same error message that it failed to mount sdb1 which is an SD card, but the card is mounted when I log in.
Maybe it is because it is formatted exfat? I'll upload the error messages...

snapshot fails on a machine which has (only!) 2Gb RAM.
Tested on fresh rc1 system (no additional packages installed).
Except choice"personal" (default is"general"), no settings were changed away from the defaults within isosnaphot.

No warnings are issued ahead of time. It churns the CPUs for 20min... then pukes with the screencapped error message dialog.

successfully tested: copy running system to pendrive (chose first numbered item in the menu, aka"full-featured")

quirk:
Upon first boot of the created pendrive, F5 root_persist (along with other details of the source system) is already pre-selected.
IIRC, even the second ("custom") boot menu line is pre-selected ~~ can just press Enter to boot.
The system recognizes that persistence has been requested and that rootfs does not yet exist, so prompts to create the rootfs...
...but does not provide the expected opportunity to choose semi-automatic save mode.
