I think I found my network delay problem!

0000671: Disable CONFIG_FW_LOADER_USER_HELPER

========= SCRAPER REMOVED AN EMBEDDED LINK HERE ===========
url was:"https://elrepo.org/bugs/view.php?id=671"
linktext was:"https://elrepo.org/bugs/view.php?id=671"
====================================

This makes a lot of sense since I am getting firmware loading problems on the machine with delays. I checked the kernel configs and the earlier kernels and the 32-bit kernel don't have this set.

Another approach would be to fix the firmware problems.

Oh, that's interesting! That would explain why networking changes don't fix it. I use"apt-get update" and I don't see a delay. Do you get a delay when you run"apt-get update && echo got here"? I'm wondering if it is a problem with the"apt" command or if it is related to your system.
I get with that command the 20-25 sec delay before"got here" shows. Not a system problem, since MX-16.1 upgraded to Stretch is on the same machine and shows no such delay.

EDIT: I installed MX Repo Manager and switched repos from Utah to Sweden, but no diff.

Have you tried using apt-get instead of apt? As I said, I get no delay when I use apt-get.

Yeah I tried that.

Going to hang it up as long as it's a one-off for antiX.

Thanks for the help.

My knowledge is limited, and my wireless didn't appear for Wicd or ceni at first, but when I went back into ceni it was there. What did work for my Dell Inspiron 15 7559 with Intel 3165 Wireless was:

LOL, It was a function of waiting. Until iwconfig showed the wireless, it didn't work, and I guess I spent long enough trying that it eventually worked..

Only installed yesterday, but from what I've noticed so far, wicd puts my wifi into what I think is called 'airplane mode' (switched off) on my HP-G62.

This is not an AntiX problem as it happened first when I was trying out Devuan, but maybe something to consider if some one is having trouble with their wifi connection when installing.

It certainly had me foxed to start with it disabled, & it also seems slower to connect with this version of wicd

Edit: Just started up my HP-G62, & I have no wifi connection, it's hard blocked again(?).
Ceni wouldn't start it, so had to go to control panel - wicd, switch on wifi again, before it would come up - weird behaviour!

(Maybe I will reinstall, just to make sure it's not me.)

Decided to try out a couple of things before re installing, purged wicd, still got trouble with wifi, it came up after 4min 22secs.

Rebooted, no wifi, waited 5mins 36secs before trying rfkill unblock, rfkill list, according to them it isn't blocked.

Tried setting it up with ceni, said something about an old file being left behind. Re booted again, no wifi, tried rfkill again, no joy, tried ceni again, this time it worked & setup wifi.

Going to re boot again to see what happens........

Man, this is weird......
keith@hp-g62:~
$ sudo ifup wlan0
[sudo] password for keith:
ifup: waiting for lock on /run/network/ifstate.wlan0
ifup: interface wlan0 already configured
keith@hp-g62:~
$ sudo ceni
keith@hp-g62:~
$ rfkill list
0: hp-wifi: Wireless LAN
Soft blocked: yes
Hard blocked: no
1: phy0: Wireless LAN
Soft blocked: yes
Hard blocked: yes
keith@hp-g62:~
$ rfkill unblock all
Tried sudo ceni, & it said that wlan0 is already configured.
At about 3min 42secs my wifi got enabled, so I came & posted this here.

Really weird behaviour, this laptop normally 'just works' with any Linux or BSD, & it has been running AntiX since 13.2.

Complete re install, fresh / & /home, no wifi. Set up using wicd to turn it on & configured.

Rebooted, no wireless interface available, rfkill list => everything blocked, rfkill unblock, no change.

Noticing a lot of disk activity, not normal behaviour.

After 14min 32secs it became unblocked, several minutes after using rfkill unblock.

(The md5sum was checked before installing.)

users with wireless troubles:

please post the inxi -F for your PC, which will supply the iso you are using as well as data on your wireless part. Also, see posts above about BitJam's issues with the 64 bit kernel.

@thriftee, fatmac, and others,

There is a problem with the configuration of the 64-bit kernel in antiX-17-b2. It only affects systems that have missing firmware (this is hardware dependent). The symptom is that it takes an extra few minutes before wireless (and possibly other) hardware becomes available. We are working on a fix. The 32-bit kernel does not have this problem. To verify you've been affected, you can use the following command to scroll through the dmesg output to find reports of firmware errors highlighted in red:

Code: Select all

dmesg --color=always | less -R
You can also get to this command using the new command line control centre,"antiX-cli-cc" by going to"System Information" --> dmesg.

I've attached a screenshot of what a firmware error message looks like in the dmesg output.

This is from the same Dell Inspiron 15 7559 that had wifi trouble on the 64 bit version. I'm loading the 32 bit, now. So far so good. It came up in 3840x2060 but I was able to change resolution.

Oh boy, its an EFI machine and the only menu option for where to boot from were mbr and root, so i chose mbr. Now I got the grub rescue prompt because its looking for something in EFI

error:file '/boot/grub/x86_64-efi/normal.mod' not found
entering rescue mode
grub rescue>

When i loaded the 64 bit version i tried to update the EFI with grub, but it failed, so i updated the mbr. The 32 bit version didn't have the option to update EFI.

ahhhh, i can boot by doing an F12 and selecting legacy options hard drive. not so good, but at least works for now

antiX 32 bit's can't install grub to EFI...its a limitation of grub AFAIK.
