I've seen this on earlier versions. Since restarting IceWM fixes it, the problem is probably not caused by ownership of files under /home/demo changed to root. But like D.O. I only saw it after a GUI app was run as root. In my case I was installing the Google Chrome browser and it ran some GUI app as root to do the install. Right after that I lost the window decoration buttons. But I was unable to replicate the problem when I did the same procedure on a fresh Live system.

have you seen this on installed, or just live?

I can generally make the window decorations screw up by opening a few user-apps, then gparted, then while gparted is scanning open up a few more user apps. It doens't always mess up the window decorations, but its them most reproducible method I've got. I've also crashed the window decorations by running libreoffice and synaptic without gparted.

I've also tried different icewm themes...no difference that I can see.

***edit*** while I was typing this I lost *some* but not all window decorations and I have nothing running but iceweasel.

Some more on the long boot time issue I have.

The dmesg report shows errors in loading the firmware files.

For each of the various kabini firmware files, it say's"failed with error -2". Then it appears to timeout or shutdown or something. It reawakens about a minute later and tries loading another one of the kabini firmware files.

I do note in /lib/firmware/radeon that the codename portion of the filename for the various kabini firmware files is in uppercase,"KABINI", instead of lowercase.

Code: Select all

/lib/firmware/radeon/KABINI_ce.bin
/lib/firmware/radeon/KABINI_me.bin
/lib/firmware/radeon/KABINI_mec.bin
/lib/firmware/radeon/KABINI_pfp.bin
/lib/firmware/radeon/KABINI_rlc.bin
/lib/firmware/radeon/KABINI_sdma.bin
There's some other AMD apu/gpu chipsets that I think might also be affected by that uppercase/lowercase naming issue for their firmware files:

Code: Select all

bonaire
hainan
hawaii
kabini
kaveri
mullins
oland
pitcairn
tahiti
verde
The Siduction fixes repo has an updated linux-firmware-nonfree package (version 0.43.3), that has uppercase and lowercase named radeon firmware files:

  • ========= SCRAPER REMOVED AN EMBEDDED LINK HERE ===========

    linktext was:"http://packages.siduction.org/fixes/poo ... .3_all.deb"

    .
I think it might fix the firmware loading errors. One drawback, it's installed size appears to be approx. 1.4MB greater than that of the Jessie firmware-linux-nonfree package (version 0.43).

Bad spot in the universe for me today. Somebody robbed parts of my lawn mower and Trying like heck to get Beta 2 boot going.

Best yet on safe graphics mode. I got this shot in before the IBM T23 locked up. Never got a inxi report because of the cpu hammering.
I'm cooking the cpu. Conky shows it.

Image

That is safe graphics boot > second line on menu > no other inputs done on F keys.
Get a red error about default driver and then in red available drivers and suggestion to use the --force option in boot cheat code I guess.
vesa and savage is on the list of available drivers to use the --force option with.
My IBM uses the savage chip (not sis) but I can roll with vesa preferably with the --force option.

I tried erasing"xorg=safe" and insert"--force vesa" in its place but I bet I am screwing up the force line.
Like needing a -- force=vesa or --force=vesa or something.

Edit: Forgot to mention. Picking the 1st line just get me to the desktop starting to load and then the mouse/computer locks up.

Like the other time that the CPU went nuts.... what happens when you choose the options to make it boot and a space-, min-, or plain session as apposed to a rox- session?

Did this before your reply, Dave. I figured I'd take pictures to show what is selected and then the error messages.

Now maybe we'll know better what I mean by red error and then the --force suggestion.

Right now. I cannot get past the mouse pointer showing up. Then the taskbar corners start to load. Then everything locks up.
md5sum done and double checked if wondering also. Booting off of usb and using PLOP cd since bios does not support usb boot.

I think my next step is to lay aside the IBM T23 and move on to something a litter more forgiving. Like my Panasonic CF-48.
Different graphics chip (intel I think). Actually a older computer but its a P4 processor.
Will use the PLOP CD and the usb again on it later on.
Like I said earlier.

Today is a sucky day for me. __{{emoticon}}__

It picks up OK then. So the pcmcia card bus and this beta kernel does not play well together I guess.

Otherwise. Smooth sailing on this rig. __{{emoticon}}__

Get a red error about default driver and then in red available drivers and suggestion to use the --force option in boot cheat code I guess.
vesa and savage is on the list of available drivers to use the --force option with.
My IBM uses the savage chip (not sis) but I can roll with vesa preferably with the --force option.
This was due to a miscommunication between anti and me. I updated the live-init script to call make-xorg-conf with the"default" option when it was making a default xorg.conf file. I had also updated the make-xorg-conf script to handle the"default" option. Unfortunately only the new live-init script made it into the beta2 and not the new make-xorg-conf script. That is why you are getting the --force error message. The make-xorg-conf script treats unknown command line options as driver names. It is smart enough to know the drivers that are available and won't user a driver that is not available without the --force option.

You could work around this problem by using the"3" cheat to boot to run level 3 then as root run:
make-xorg-conf -o /etc/X11/xorg.conf safe
and then start X with the command:

Code: Select all

telinit 5
This will create a"safe" xorg.conf file in /etc/X11/xorg.conf. I would like to know if this works for you or if your CPU still acts like a toaster oven.

BTW, here is the"safe" xorg.conf I would like you to try:

Code: Select all

#----------------------------------------------------------------------
# xorg.conf file
#
# Generated by make-xorg-conf sometime around Wed Apr 15 17:30:12 MDT 2015
#
# If you want to save customizations, delete the line above or this
# file will get automatically deleted on the next live boot.

        Modes "1280x1024""1333x768""1024x768""800x600"

You can generate this yourself with the command"make-xorg-conf safe". I don't have high hopes for success but I am curious about whether this works for you or not.

Re aufs - It only seems to add files on the very first run of installing a deb. I installed audacious, and a file appeared. I then installed xfe and no new file(s) show up.
I also tried auplink /live/aufs flush and installed another app, no new files.
Upgrading a currently installed package also (consistently, every operation) produces files in the plnk directory.
There were a few other operations I found, but I neglected to jot adequate notes. First-run of firefox? Recompressing files which have been extracted, updating the existing archive file?
It seems aufs isn't cleaning up files that it temporarily"queues, due to temporary file locks" (or something like that).

I too had intermittently encountered that during prior (last fall) beta/alpha builds.
My impression / guess was that it's related to"some operations are launched via gksu(sudo mode), others are executed via scripted sudo (or maybe su)"
and that the WM (or theme engine?) is wrestling with"gtk2 vs gtk3" as well as"root user account lacks a proper theme/WM configuration..."

[edit]
If you discover a pair of apps (or app + dialog window) which seem to trigger the glitch, as a troubleshooting step, try launching each of that pair in different workspace.
(if splitting the pair of windows into different workspaces avoids the glitch... that would be an enlightening detail, but how to"fix"?)

You could work around this problem by using the"3" cheat to boot to run level 3 then as root run:
Quote:
make-xorg-conf -o /etc/X11/xorg.conf safe
and then start X with the command:
Code:
telinit 5
This will create a"safe" xorg.conf file in /etc/X11/xorg.conf. I would like to know if this works for you or if your CPU still acts like a toaster oven.
You the man Bitjam.

Works like a charm. Running live now. CPU is under control.

BTW, here is the"safe" xorg.conf I would like you to try:
Code:
#----------------------------------------------------------------------
# xorg.conf file
#
# Generated by make-xorg-conf sometime around Wed Apr 15 17:30:12 MDT 2015
#
# If you want to save customizations, delete the line above or this
# file will get automatically deleted on the next live boot.
#----------------------------------------------------------------------

Device"Device0"
SubSection"Display"
Modes"1280x1024""1333x768""1024x768""800x600"
EndSubSection
EndSection
You can generate this yourself with the command"make-xorg-conf safe". I don't have high hopes for success but I am curious about whether this works for you or not.
Just to be clear. After I do the install and reboot. Use the"3" boot code cheat again for cli boot and do that
"make-xorg-conf safe" again? Then login again using"telinit 5"?

Anyways. I will hold up for a bit and wait before running the installer. No hurry on my side.
Just posting back the fix worked running live. As added detail. I used the 1st boot line this time
with no F key changes/touches instead of the 2nd safe graphics boot line in grub screen.
Only edit was typing in 3 at the end of other boot lines in the grub screen input box with the other cheat codes in it.

Looks like this is gonna work to me.

Brilliant! Thanks for doing the test!

The key thing is to make sure the safe /etc/X11/xorg.conf file is there. I believe we have stopped erasing xorg.conf during the install process so if X is working correctly live then it should work correctly on the installed system on the first boot as well. To be on the safe side, you could use"3" on the first boot of the installed system and check for the xorg.conf file. If it is not there then run make-oxg-conf as described above and then run"telinit 5". No need to login again.

BTW: we are trying to collect all the piddly little changes needed for converting from live to installed in a single script at /usr/sbin/live-to-installed. This should help document what we do. The payload is in the bottom of the main() routine:

Code: Select all

    local ds_startup="etc/desktop-session/startup"
    local rox_pb=".config/rox.sourceforge.net/ROX-Filer/pb_antiX-%s"

    del_line "toram-eject" $ds_startup
    del_line "persist-config" $ds_startup
    del_line_skel"gksu antixsources.sh" ".%s/menu"
    del_line_skel"antixsources.desktop" $rox_pb
    rm_file_skel "Desktop/Install.desktop"

    rm_file etc/udev/rules.d/90-fstab-automount.rules

    cp_file /usr/share/antiX/rc.local.install etc/rc.local
    cp_file /usr/share/antix-install/issue etc/issue
    cp_file /usr/share/slim/themes/antiX/slim-install.conf etc/slim.conf

    cp_dir / etc/init.d/debian etc/init.d
    rm_dir etc/init.d/debian

    idir_chroot dpkg --purge $PURGE_PACKAGES

    clear_dir media run tmp var/tmp
    rm_dir var/log/live
    clear_files var/log
Since deleting xorg.conf does not show up there, there is a good chance we are not deleting it in the installer anymore so you probably don't have to do any extra work on your first installed boot. But if I were you I would boot into runlevel 3 anyway and make sure.

Install Done. When I rebooted. Things happened fast. So I missed editing and adding the"3" for cli boot.

No biggy though as things carried over OK. But maybe not like you think. But alls well that ends well.

Wireless connected using Wicd this time during live session. It carried over into the install. When I ran the installer. I hit this check box for"keep live install changes". Maybe that is why everything turned out OK?
I will come back later to give more input on the 2 usb pcmcia card card bus in this laptop made by a different
manufacturer. Also sound and youtube feedback. I expect no changes though.

So now, Installed on internal hard drive of IBM T23 laptop
