The hex code is"347". This translates to 839 in decimal. This is the value that is used for the"1600x1200*" entry in the F7 menu. These vga values for the higher resolutions are not standardized but we can still try to accommodate a range of hardware, especially hardware that is used by our testers.
Is there a 1600x1200 mode listed after you press <Enter>? If not then this is not a bug. If so then please tell me the hex code that is associated with 1600x1200. for example running in Virtual Box here I have an entry:skidoo wrote:boot menu

This post is about identifying"seemingly unnecessary bloat" in the build.
From checking /live/linux path, it seems to me the build process could/should withhold the following from the squashfs:
/var/cache/man/* 1.2Mb
/var/cache/apt-show-versions/* 9.6Mb (regenerated each time"apt update" is performed)
Also, instead of"fonts-dejavu" (metapackage), perhaps package"fonts-dejavu-core" would suffice.
The metapackage pulls in"fonts-dejavu-extra" @6.5Mb
After consulting these pages, I can't find a clear answer to"What does 'fonts-dejavu-extra' actually provide?"

(I haven't done so, but) should be able to determine"What does 'fonts-dejavu-extra' actually provide?"
by installing debian packages"font-manager" and"gucharmap" then using font-manager to display a grid of character entities.

BitJam, I'm sitting at at 1920x1080 monitor. The other PC I had been using to test had a 4:3 monitor,
so I figured I should change the previous F8-saved (1024x768?) choice.
I tried both of the 1600x options offered @F7; both resulted in the error I reported.
I'll need to recheck, but I believe a matching entry was offered on the"modes hexcodes and choose an alphabet letter" screen (which led me to report this as a bug).

Thanks D.O!
In fact, please give me the hex codes for any resolutions that aren't in the F7-Console menu or are in the menu and are broken on your machine(s). As I said before, this is all non-standard so the same hex code won't work on all hardware.
If there is a hex code for this resolution, please tell me that as well.skidoo wrote:BitJam, I'm sitting at at 1920x1080 monitor.

If you are sure that emptying /var/cache/man/* and /var/cache/apt-show-versions/* at build is ok, then we'll definitely include it.skidoo wrote:This post is about identifying"seemingly unnecessary bloat" in the build.

Even if cron.daily isn't run, /var/cache/man/* content is also autogenerated by dpkg post-install trigger
Yes. I've had those paths in my snapshot/remaster excludes list for 2yrs.sure that emptying /var/cache/man/* and /var/cache/apt-show-versions/* at build is ok
edited to add:# IF ABSENT, THIS CONTENT IS AUTOGENERATED WHEN NEEDED (UPON FIRST RUN OF apt update, BY ROOT OR SUDOER)
/var/cache/apt-show-versions/*
# its content is auto-generated by /etc/cron.daily/man-db calling /usr/bin/mandb (can also regenerate, at will, by manually running mandb)
/var/cache/man/*
Even if cron.daily isn't run, /var/cache/man/* content is also autogenerated by dpkg post-install trigger

This post is is to suggest adding helplinks to reach preinstalled documentation which is (AFAICT) currently not easily discoverable.
Links to the following (extensive) preinstalled docs could be added to /usr/share/antiX/FAQ/icewm.html#_links
file:///usr/share/doc/icewm-common/FAQ/IceWM-FAQ.html/
could be (should be) linked from file:///usr/share/antiX/FAQ/index.html
file:///usr/share/doc/streamtuner2/help/html/index.html/
('should' because it is NOT accessible via the program's GUI ~~ it's"Documentation" button does nothing)
Links to the following preinstalled docs could (should?) be added into /usr/share/antiX/FAQ/conky.html#_links
(note: these lack hyperlinked navigation between each other)
file:///usr/share/doc/conky-std/docs.html
file:///usr/share/doc/conky-std/config_settings.html
file:///usr/share/doc/conky-std/variables.html
also
I suggest adding the following to the head (or foot) of /etc/skel/.conkrc
(discoverable when controlCenter --} desktop (tab) --} Edit System Monitor is used)
additional (uncategorized) onboard docs which I think merit linking to, from within antiX helpdocs:
(Paste 'em into the foot of existing help index page, or FAQ page, under a"additional (uncategorized) onboard helpdocs" section?)

If struggling to meet target size for iso, consider omitting/nixing this:
Code: Select all
# 7Mb worth of oversized png iconfiles I'll never use
rm -Rf /usr/share/icons/Adwaita/256x256/*
