I got out my Dual PIII 750 machine. It has an onboard Adaptec 2940w. antiX 14r5 is able to see the aic7xxx SCSI, but with Slacko gparted isn't seeing the drives on one of my dual PIII machines. I have an Adaptec 2940u2/u2w and an Adaptec 29160 for it, but can't partition the drives, which is a shame because it has 10,000 RPM Cheetah's in it and 2 gb of server ram.

But with antiX 14r5 USB isn't working for Wireless or Flashdrives.

I'm sorry, I can't get the cd to burn under linux. The md5sum is wrong. I think that means the cd is not the same as the iso file so its no good. I am trying to burn a cd-r in a dvd writer. I need a cd-r for the old machine because it can't read dvd's.

It is upsetting to need to copy the iso to a flashdrive to copy it to a windows machine to be able to burn a good cd. I am trying not to use windows anymore.

Maybe next time I shut it down I'll swap in a DVD drive from another laptop. I don't know what else to try. It can boot from the DVD, but under linux it can't write a good one.

how do you burn your cd's?

Are you using SimpleBurn - Menu > Sound & Video > SimpleBurn

At the command line,
to write a dvd image to disc,

Code: Select all

growisofs -dvd-compat -Z /dev/dvd=dvd-image.iso
& for a cd, I believe it is.

Code: Select all

wodim -v speed=2 dev=/cdrom cd-image.iso

Or use cdw, if you like that better

Oh my, Thanks much for the replies.

I have tried cdrecord and pburn this last time. Its very weird. I do a blkid and see nothing there, so something is wrong. But pburn said it burned a cd, but then the md5sum didn't match.

As I said, I will try swapping physical drives as I have 3 parts laptops the same as this one, as well as its twin, anyway.

In the meantime,I copied 14r4 to flash, copied it here from the windows machine, downloded the 5 patch, created the 5 iso, copied it to flash, moved the flash to windows, buned a 14r5 cd, and used that.

But i'm really trying to get by without windows....

Anyway, the Dual P III 750 Coppermine server is able to boot and run antiX14r5 full... Thats pretty amazing,I'd say.

Still having gparted troubles though, so I now rebooted in knoppix 6.21, which is a similar version to the Debian Lenny that has a drive on it, and I'm using knoppix booted live to shrink the lenny partition, and make room toload antix and slacko if i can get that to load.

And yes, Ineed to find a linux burner program that just works to burn cd's or dvd's or both or either,if that makes sense. I can deal with the differences if I know what to run...

Well, its been a terrible day. I got the 10,000 RPM Cheeta in and running, so I have plenty of fast free disk space. Both antiX 14r5 and Slacko 5.7.0 are able to boot, but both are disasters

antiX can't access the wifi via USB wifi card 0bda:8172 RTL8191S. I got a driver /lib/firmware/RTL8192SU/rtl8192sfw.bin and did a

Code: Select all

modprobe 8712U
but it does nothing,so no wifi, no internet, etc. So I was able to install it,but can't do anything with it.

Slacko is worse because I can't access the hard drives because its missing the aic7xxx and even though I found the files in antiX, I don't know how to make it work from slacko's live cd or if that would work. Wifi works in slacko, but what good is wifi if you can't install because you can't access the disk drives?

What a terrible day. Very demoralizing.BTW, the machine was last booted to linux on Oct 10, 2008. Its only been booted to Win/98 since then.

I don't know if that's a typo, but the driver is"r8712u". It should be a part of the kernel. The .bin file in /lib/firmware is just that, firmware.

It is possible in antiX if you are booting live that networking might be disabled. In the boot parameters at boot up, remove the"antix=LX" and see if it does you any good.

Thanks for the reply, DO.

I tried it and it ran, and when I do an lsmod its there with a 0 next to it, but if I go into ceni I don't see anything, and same with wicd.

I need to go back and try again after I take out the LX. I suppose another option is to buy an old PCI WiFi card or tape cables down onto the carpet, LOL.

I looked into the SCSI driver for Slacko, and it looks to me like the only solution there is to put in an IDE drive to boot from to avoid booting from SCSI. Even with that, I'm not sure if I could load the module to be able to access the SCSI drives. It looks like I'd need to rebuild the kernel, and I don't think I'd have very good odds at that without help, so that would mean the solution would be to give up, or be forced to reload Win/98 and the games, guessing that it probably would have trouble if I tried to copy the entire Win/98 to an IDE drive and try to boot from that instead.

The old thing actually runs pretty well considering it was built in 1997. I saw a 3000+ bogomips number there somewhere, which is triple the speed of my old laptop, and I bet that number doesn't factor in the lightning fast drives.

D.O, I'm going to change the title.

I appreciate the help, btw. Ok, I checked the boot and Im not using LX. I investigated further, and found that my usb flash drive doesn't work either, and when I look at lspci -k I see I have nodriver attached to the usb ports. My suspicion is that the wireless driver might work if usb was working. Anyway, I'll paste in the relevant info in case someone can spot the problem and knows how to get it working.

BTW, its an old machine, so its USB 1.0 or 1.1. at best.

Anyone have any ideas?

The command for finding usb is

Code: Select all

lsusb

Code: Select all

lsusb -v

Code: Select all

lsusb -t
At least. That is how I go about looking to see what is connected to my pcmcia 4 port combo card bus.

psst.

Oh yeah. Every once in while when I trouble shoot wifi

Code: Select all

dmesg | tail
tells me stuff also.

Thanks for looking, Roky...

Yes,I did that but didn't think to paste it because it says there is none when I'm booted with antiX. I'll fire it up and get the exact text in a little bit after I get some coffee, and get permission to tape down the wires over the carpet again, LOL

Can you point me to someplace I would find learning info for me to learn hot to take an existing kernel, like antiX or Slacko, or Slitaz, and learn how to get the source, change it, recompile it, and test the changes? I'm guessing you might know? Thanks __{{emoticon}}__

Here is the output of lsusb....

Code: Select all

 lsusb
unable to initialize libusb: -99
Thanks, fatmac... I'll go have a look.

BTW, other than the usb problem, the 14r5 is running fine on the old Dual P III 750. I'll have to try a video, though. That might be interesting...

As soon as I changed flashplayer to never activate, it played just fine in html5. Not too shabby for an old Frankenstein creation
