Slow iceweasel isn`t for me.Dillo opens web site quickly.Yad - view doc/close doc isn`t for PC machine. Grub customizer is different from MX14-3.After installation again I can`t mount partitions of my harddrive from control centre.Solution of mounting is spacefm as root.Dark , black is not for me , but I hope it is better for eyes than blue colour.I want to translate into russian language.I have seen mistakes.Thank you.

Would an OLD kernel maybe work? Like a Wheezy era kernel? That SliTaz one is 3.2.53. Keep in mind that I know almost nothing about kernels...

In past editions they have been in a seperate"Terminal Apps" menu on the top level. If they aren't in the menu, they are pretty hard to know they are there.

I honestly didn't think I cared much about the terminal apps, until I tried to find the cd burner app today. I couldn't remember its name, and of course typing"cd" and tab gets you no where because cd is a command already.

just a thought.

file-roller ...accessible via menu?
It is now called archive manager under Accessories. It was previously requested as a better alternative to xarchiver.

Please compare engrampa to file-roller.
I think engrampa is the better choice.

+ engrampa, plus its dependencies, is at least 10Mb lighter than file-roller plus dependencies

+ engrampa respects selected WM theme, file-roller apparently does not (diff window titlebar, different icons and line-height in sidebar)

+ engrampa's file"Open" dialog window provides a bonus feature: a textbox where you can type, or paste, instead of beng forced to browse folder trees
(click top-left pencil icon to toggle this preference. engrampa remembers it and displays the"Location" input box each time, until/unless you later UNtoggle )

I haven't tried the A5 yet, but was doing an install to the old Dell Inspiron 8100 P IIIm (which now has a very fast 7200 rpm drive that is twice as fast as the old one was) from CD and I took the rox-icewm from the boot menu desktop list and booted it.

When I got to the live screen, I didn't get the usual rox pinboard with the installer icon, and instead it only came up with a home folder icon and an error message saying"no pinboard in use. the default pinboard has been selected. use the rox -p=Default" to turn it on in the future".

I now know that"antixsources" on the menu is really the installer, so even though I didn't have the icon I went and ran it from the menu. It installed fne, but when it rebooted after the install I got that same"no pinboard in use" error message, but this time the icons are there like they should be.

My guess is that the root cause of the problem was that I went and selected rox-icewm before the live boot.

In order to test A5 I need to put the iso's on flashdrives and transfer them from my win-vista laptop to one of the linux ones to be able to put together a new iso.

LOL, then I'll need to burn a new flashdrive from there, which I've never done via linux. I have failed every time I've ever tried burning a CD or DVD via linux in the past, so I don't ever try that anymore. Not sure if it was actually the distros that I was burning that were the real problem, because the md5's would always check out, but things wouldn't work and I had to throw them away. IIRC the biggest culprit was Frugalware, 2 releases of 32 and 64, totalling 4 wasted DVD's. Even though given my moniker, you can understand why I would be attracted to that distro, I had to give up on it to preserve my sanity. It kept erasing partition tables on my drives, and making me crazy.

Some observations that need, or may need, attention:

First the good
The nouveau driver seems to work very well with none of the problems I have seen like in MX14.2, wattOS R8 and SparkyLinux 3.5 LXDE amongst others.

Now the bad
Opened /dev/gsmmodem with Leafpad which showed no text but then I couldn't close Leafpad. I had to kill it using Htop. /dev/gsmmodem is a symlink (Symbolic Link) for /dev/ttyUSB0. Same thing occurred with /dev/ttyUSB0. Using"Edit as root", I couldn't kill Leafpad from Htop. I had to use sudo kill <pid> from ROXTerm.

Some applications recognise Ctrl + the + key on the Numeric keypad but others don't. e.g. Geany does but ROXTerm doesn't.

Scrolling isn't consistent across applications. e.g. when scrolling in Synaptic, and its dialogue windows, the thumb moves all the way to where the scrollbar was clicked

Change Keyboard Layout - I select Spanish and the Spanish Flag is displayed but when the Keyboard Config dialogue is opened again it shows British as the selected language. It subsequently shows British as the selected language no matter what language you choose. Also, at the top, of that dialogue, it displays"Choose a language"; shouldn't it be"Choose a Layout"?. When you select a language, you should also be able to choose any of the derivatives for that language e.g. Latin America. When I choose Spanish the Keyboard Layout is not correct for my L.A. keyboard.

I'm going back to Mepis for a while to discuss the Migration from MX14.2 to 14.3 amongst other things.

PS: I've changed my mind about rox after seeing its implementation in puppy linux. It could be improved with an on toggle which could be on the menu, but it would be cool if the show desktop button would also turn on the pinboard if configured to if that was possible, and that way it could be left off to save memory if desired, and toggled on real easily when wanted.

The MX stuff is fine for bigger, faster machines, but not so great for the older boxes, IMO

I looked and looked, and then realized that what you say is true. You do have it there. I can select a desktop session with rox and icewm or space and icewm or neither and icewm. When I select that desktop, I'm really selecting which pinboard to bring up as well as which file manager to use.

It took me 20 minutes of hunting to realize that.

The reality is that myself, I need a super memory and cpu efficient setup as long as I keep and use my old machines, and not making any money anymore means that I don't have money to replace anything that still physically runs, so I am looking for a system that has all these nice things installed there on the drive, but is easily configured to leave them off, and then with one or two clicks, they run when I need them, and go away again when I'm done.

Your system is much closer to that than most, and I know you care about keeping the software efficient so the old machines are still useful __{{emoticon}}__
