4.8 kernels in repos

I have made available the latest and greatest kernel version - 4.8.

Install manually via apt-get or synaptic.

It bite me bad enough I ended up doing a clean install.

This kernel also failed to boot for my antix16 install. I tried twice to get 4.8.0 to run without effect.

I installed the linux-image-4.8.0-antix-sid.1-amd64-smp and left the linux-image-4.6.2-antix-sid.1-amd64-smp so I had both kernels showing in my grub menu. I would have been in trouble too if I had removed the old kernel before trying the new kernel.

I failed to write down the errors. I was left in the initramfs both times with something about not finding the /sbin/init. There must be something wrong with the 4.8.0 kernel package.

EDIT: Also, if your installation is important you can boot from a live disk and install an older kernel. You could maybe boot the root partition directly from the live disk or at least chroot to your root partition and then apt-get safely.

EDIT2: If you kept the old install then you could just mount that and copy the kernel and initrd from the new root to the old root /boot. Grub can be told how to find the working kernel with a little practice.

Are you running sid? It installed ok for me on sid and the jessie version also installed without issue in VBox.

It installed fine in jessie, just took forever to boot up, each and every time for 6 total, and killed the networking, even though it it was using the right driver.
It could not see any wireless routers for some reason.

Dell Latitude D630 with SSD and using kernel Kernel: 4.4.10
Boot time about 30 seconds.
updated to 4.8
Kernal 4.8 boot time is right close to 5 minutes and 4 times I had a blank screen. Again , no wireless.
Seen several disabled in Bios statements during bootup..
Removed 4.8 and all is well.

To old is my guess right now.

Here is why I need pae

It is 32 bit because this hard drive came out of my broken IBM Z60M laptop. Which was a 1.2 ghz single core Pentium M cpu laptop.

Hi again. I have trouble getting permission to post here sometimes.

I did have the testing repo with my initial problem so I updated to sid still with the same problem.

The 4.8.0 antix-sid.1 kernel seems to install and grub seems to go into the partition without a problem.
I actually go back to debian wheezy to update-grub for my master bootloader and that grub is older than antix16.

OK, that posted. Here are more messages when the kernel gets lost:

I tried to update to the linux-image-4.8.0-antix-sid.1-amd64-smp on two different computers and both failed.
They were both old Intel Irongate core i3 systems without uefi.
They both had Debian Wheezy installed making the master Grub menu to sda instead of antiX.
If I am the only person with a problem then I would blame the old Debian Grub config.

I see nothing obvious in my Wheezy grub.cfg and now suspect the kernel.

Everything looks like Grub should be finding my kernel and the initrd.img without trouble.
I suspect the kernel config. The config for 4.6.2 and 4.8.0 seem very different.
I compared the two kernels using

and see where many changes have been made.
This is just a theory except everything worked with 4.6.2 and not with 4.8.0 or maybe this is just my setup.
I can work around this problem for now just hope nobody else has the same problem.

P.S. Is there really supposed to by a linux-firmware-image-4.8.0-antix-sid.1-amd64-smp ???

I just tried the new kernel and failed again. I tried the linux-image-4.8.1-antix-sid.1-amd64-smp and had the same problem as with the 4.8.0-antix-sid kernel.

I then removed the 4.8.1 and left the 4.6.2 kernel I have been using. So I tried the older kernel linux-image-4.4.10-antix-sid.1-amd64-smp and everything works normally. There must be something different about the 4.8.0 and the 4.8.1 kernels causing them to fail to boot on my system.

I am now running from the sid repos. I prefer to begin with the antix core iso from Feb because I like the minimalism and haven't had any other problems.

I wonder if the bug that Andrew Morton added in very late - that Torvalds was fuming about has anything to do with the issues we've encountered?

In any case, I'd recommend looking at the patch tree for 4.8 subsequent to the release to make sure our kernel doesn't have the buggy hack that was entered just before release and created issues.
