No hardware hiccups so far. Booted up faster than previous kernels. Sound, Wireless, Touchpad, all working.

I run wttr in terminal as well as a conky and batti on startup. Since I have gobs of ram on this unit to handle it.
Hence the 150MB ram readout in inxi using Icewm with no rox or icewm icon desktop. Other members may have
lower idle ram usage than mine.

Later on this weekend. I will test this 4.8.1 kernel out on my IBM T430 laptop also.
I would disregard the build message error during the install process folks.
It seems a red herring and had no effect on my ability to reboot with the new kernel
install. All hail

Long boot, 4 minutes, the one time it did boot up.

1 out of 4 tries.

Dell Latitude D630 BIOS is from 2008.

These are a lot of good reports so I am now going to blame myself.

I just tried those new kernels again and still cannot get anything newer than 4.6.2 to boot.
This must be my own problem and not related to antiX so should be disregarded.

I tried these without luck:

4.8.1-gnu-antix-sid.1-amd64-smp
4.8.1-antix-sid.1-amd64-smp
4.8.1-antix.1-amd64-smp
4.8.0-antix-sid.1-amd64-smp

I might have a problem with my Debian grub 1.99 failing to load the correct modules.
There is certainly something different about the 4.8.x kernels my setup does not anticipate.

I am always left in the (initramfs) prompt where the kernel is unable to work with the disk or filesystem.
This is not too important for now because the 4.6.2 is working and I am about to start another project. Then I won't be using this old Ironlake notebook except for emergencies anyway.

I just tried my antix15 installation locked to the jessie repositories. The linux-image-4.8.1-antix-sid.1-amd64-smp worked properly. So now I think my Debian Grub 1.99 is fine and there is something wrong with my antix16 installation.

I then added the correct kernel headers and all of the errors went away including the warnings about r8169.
I then added the headers to the antix16 for 4.8.1 kernel except continue to have problems with that with sid.
I think there is some other difference besides just jessie vs. sid about the 4.8.1 and will stay alert for the clues.

Anyway, this convinces me the grub and the kernel are not the real problem with my antix16 installation.

I think we can probably come to the conclusion that the latest kernel may not work on some old hardware. If we can pin it down what is causing the failure, maybe we can fix it for later 4.8 versions.

Booting with kernel 4.8 I never get beyond a black screen showing nothing but a (non-blinking) cursor. Never had any problems like that with 4.4 or 4.6.

Here's the part of my /var/log/messages where things really seem to be going awry:

My antix16 installation is now working with linux-image-4.8.1-antix-sid.1-amd64-smp after a little change.
I added the antix dev to the sid repo. I think the udev was the problem. I grabbed some newer packages with the apt-get update and apt-get dist-upgrade and now antix16 is booting with the new kernel.

I added the dev packages to experiment with eudev except only had to update the previous udev.
I would recommend everybody add the dev packages who want the newest kernels with sid.

EDIT: I just checked and am not sure where the updated packages originated.
My update might have been very coincidental so this is what happened that fixed my problem:
