You could also turn off the 'pinboard', but then you wouldn't have icons on the desktop. (that would save about 6MB)
JWM uses slightly less ram.
antiX is 'harder' because you have such a low spec machine. Mint wouldn't be hard on that machine, but unbearable or impossible __{{emoticon}}__

In case anyone else has a low end machine like me I ran each browser and loaded msn.com in each and then did a ps_mem.py and i now know what each browser uses of your ram. netsurf is the lowest it uses 24 megs ram Iceape uses 48 megs ram Midori uses 55 megs ram and Iceweasel was way up there using 69 megs ram.
I will try now removing stuff but I did find a 128 meg chip really cheap on ebay so I ordered it for the old machine now it will be maxed out at 192 megs rather then 128, there is 64 megs of ram hard soldered to the motherboard and the expansion slot has a 64 meg chip in it now soon to be 128 meg... the extra 64 megs should help me out some on this old machine....

so i guess when i find something in the list I don't want I remove all the x'x going across???? or just the S on the enx which I am assuming means startup???
Yes i found that and it lists the service then 1,2,3,4,5,6, S across the toprust collector wrote:antixcc, the crossed tools on the toolbar - system - edit startup services, if I remember right. I am not on an antix machine at the moment...
ANyway, you will get a list of stuff that start at boot, and you select, or deselect with the spacebar. move up and down with the arrows...
try that, and reboot, and see how it goes

Yes, remove the x's on the line of the app you want not to start.
the s is a runlevel, like 123456, I do not remember if it is where x lives, or if it means shutdown?
That should help a lot, I would think.
Anyway, go ahead and remove stuff you don't need. but I don't think you will notice that much.
As long as you don't start something, it only uses space.

I removed the ones you mentioned before and now when i get to the desktop I am down to 37 megs used instead of the original 68 megs from the other day... it is a lot snappier now thanks, is there anything else I don't need on my list???rust collector wrote:Yes, remove the x's on the line of the app you want not to start.

That is pretty impressive.
You could compare it with JWM (with or without icons) if you want.
Here's how.
Logout, at login screen Press F1, toggle through the options. They are:
Rox-IceWM (this is your default - what you are using now)
Space-IceWM (This uses anothe program to set the desktop for icons etc. Probably heavier than Rox-IceWM)
IceWM (No icons,)
Rox-Fluxbox
Space-Fluxbox
Fluxbox
Rox-Jwm
Space-Jwm
Jwm (This is probably going to be the least RAM intensive)
Mess around and see which you prefer. Just by logging out, choosing the 'desktop' and login
You might get in down to 30MB. Not bad eh for a modern distro!

I think jwm is the lightest usable one. But icewm, with no background pic, and no conky, and no pinboard would be very close to what you could get with jwm?

Yes i messed around logging out and checking with ps_mem.py and difference is about 8 megs ram if i go with the rox-jwm over the rox-icewm ... so let's say i decide to go with rox-jwm how do i get it to boot from that cause when i rebooted rox-icewm was back again....rust collector wrote:I think jwm is the lightest usable one. I think you need to edit your ~/.jwmrc file, I do not remember if that was split up into sub-files or not. But they are hidden files in your home.
In a file manager, press ctrl + h to see them
