Hey!

Does anyone have any idea what could be the problem? I've looked around but haven't found much / it goes over my head. TIA.

Yesterday they had some xserver-xorg updates at sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade upgrade. /var/log/apt/history.log says…

How about a inxi -Fxxxz report also?

The rest is above my pay grade to troubleshoot.

I do not know if the update has an issue as I would guess based on in I that you are not running the MX variant and therefore would not receive the Intel driver update that a few have complained about over at the mepis community forum. However it may be worth a look. For example here is one where the driver had to be unupdated.

There are other ones where another build of the driver fixed the issue iirc.
However my first attempt would be to make sure that the MX repos are commented out, boot into init 3 and run apt-get update followed by sgfxi. Then try using the gui again and see if the problem is still there.

The Xorg log indicates there is a bug in the xserver-xorg-video-intel package that was upgraded. I believe the dist-upgrade output is saying it upgraded to version 2.99.917-1. Google(2.99.917-1 segfault) and you will see that other people are also having a problem. For example, here is a

Make sure you upgrade your kernel. See here:

I think that perhaps I'm overwhelmed by choice of kernels. Does anyone have some ideas on what kernel to choose?

I have tested the following (plus a version of update-grub that seems to work for current setup here)…

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install linux-headers-3.18.6-antix.3-amd64-smp linux-image-3.18.6-antix.3-amd64-smp
On the one hand, this fixes the original problem, and computer plays video again without any problems.

On the other hand, it's also a gamble.

With this kernel, at coldboot…
  • Sometimes I will see the Slim login screen
  • Sometimes I won't see the Slim login screen, and computer will just hang there at a blank screen

I use the 3.7.10-antix.7 series kernels on my antiX 13 installs. No reason really to go higher, and they've proven quite reliable for me.

My rule of thumb for when I want stable gear.

2001 to 2004 or so machines.
3.12 to 3.17.1 pae pr (non pae) depending on cpu and ram.

2005 on up
3.17 on up. #When things stop working. Fall back to previous saved kernel.

But I change kernels like switching beers out of a ice chest.

Thanks dolphin_oracle and roky.

Rather arbitrarily, I went for…

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install linux-image-3.12.6-antix.1-amd64-smp linux-headers-3.12.6-antix.1-amd64-smp
It seems it's OK now.
