Hi guys,
I just installed AntiX 13.2 on an old laptop with 256 Mo Ram, and it works just fine !

However I'd like to try and set up the wireless network. Problem : there's no wireless card / interface. So I got one (Netgear) from another PC. Problem : theres no native USB port ! So I take an adapter (D-Link) from another PC (both devices work fine with Ubuntu).

After a quick look, wicd doesn't see any network, while ruilt doesn't see any interface.

Questions :
1) Do you think I can make it work, or is it pointless to try ?
2) Wich util should I use to manage the wireless network ?
3) Any tip on how to configure it ?

Thanks in advance

Kaza

You need to boot up the computer with the usb wifi attached, it won't get the drivers loaded if you plug it into a running system.

Edit: I use TPLink internal cards & they use the atheros driver, (don't know if DLink use the same).

Well. I do not see usb wireless readout anywhere in your reports. like I have here on mine.

__{{emoticon}}__ The 1d6b are just empty usb ports and that is all I see on yours.

Was the usb wireless thingy plugged in when you did your reports.Try this in root terminal 1st.

Code: Select all

inxi -U
This will update inxi and maybe show your usb wireless thingy like it does in mine.

Code: Select all

$ inxi -N
Network: Card-1: Realtek RTL8101E/RTL8102E PCI Express Fast Ethernet controller
           driver: r8169
           Card-2: Ralink RT2870/RT3070 Wireless Adapter driver: rt2800usb
Also. ifconfig -a shows no wireless interface either. Example on mine. Which is working.

Code: Select all

# ifconfig -a

          UP BROADCAST MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1

You have a P4 processor. If me. I'd bump the ram to 1 gig and run AntiX 15.
But I roll like that on computers. Being a tinkerer.

Thanks for the tip, will do.

The usb wifi is Netgear, I couldn't find which driver it uses after a quick google check. On top of that I have a DLink adapter (no usb native port).

Kernel org reveals all.

be warned, some netgear usb wireless devices use a Broadcom chip that is not supported by any open source linux drivers as far as I can tell. I've got one of these things.. It uses a BCM43142 chip. you can try the broadcom-wl-dkms package (available in repo) but YMVM.
