I was looking through synaptic today and found that wicd had wicd-cli and wicd-curses available. I installed both of the to check them out. The cli version would certainly get you connected but you would need to hunt around a little to do it. Getting the right switches in the right order may ake thing cumbersome when all you want to do is connect. This is a great option for a bare minimal system.

Now the wicd-curses option is great, everything is right there. It looks very easy to use and not a lot of hunting. There are menus on the bottom similar to htop for fast reference. I think this would be a great addition to antiX, I don't know how many time I have been without X for one reason or another and wished I had an easy net connection tool. Now we do.

Wicd now works fine for me after adding a demo account.
